In the news- October 13th…

The day began in the “Leftmost City” at about 12:09am with an assault/ attempted car theft. Police were dispatched, and while enroute to the 1000 Block of Pacific Ave were told that an unknown subject got in someone’s car when the door opened, got back out and took a swing at the vehicle’s owner. All of this was in the same area as someone (possibly the same subject) was seen throwing glass bottles at passing motorists. Both calls were given a low priority and neither saw an immediate response from Police.
The suspect was described as a Hispanic male adult, early 20s, 5ft 7in medium build, tan hat w/ a red bill, a black hooded sweatshirt last seen on Cedar Street walking North, or South. Depends on who you ask.
Police arrived at the scene, met with the victim, and found that they declined to press charges.

1:41am, Police were Downtown and looking for a male subject with a firearm. It started with a citizen waiving down a passing Patrol Officer on the 1200 Block of Pacific Ave. He was told that a Black male adult with a blue shirt, blue pants with a firearm was in the area, last seen walking towards a City Parking Garage. Additional Officers were requested.
The suspect did point the gun at someone- making the “want” felony brandishing- not in self defense. (24S-05256)
At 1:44am, an Officer reported being on the top floor of the garage, and out with someone who may/ may not match the suspect’s description (he stopped a White guy w/ blue shirt).
The Officer ran out the plate on a gray Lincoln, and one subject. The Lincoln was registered to an address in Monterey County. They cleared him.
Meanwhile, additional information was being dispensed from witnesses… the suspect may have been associated with a white pickup truck parked in the garage’s first floor. The suspect was now described as a heavy set male Hispanic w/ tattoos on his neck, wearing a black jacket. The call has now officially entered the realm of “s**t show.”
Police now were in the garage with a white GMC pickup (registered out of Freedom) with a subject who may/ may not match the new suspect description. At 1:52am, Police were out with him. The new subject was run out for wants/ warrants. A second occupant refused to give his name to Police, and was handcuffed. Once restrained, this guy’s wallet was pulled from his pocket, and ID’d by CA Driver’s License, and ran out. Returns on both were clear.
An infield ID was conducted, and both were cleared of being the gun toter. One was arrested for public drunkenness. (SCPD Case # 24S-05255/)

Still in the middle of the “man w/ a gun” s**t show, a fight erupted on the 100 Block of Walnut Ave. Police detained one of the combatants for fighting in public (CA PC 415). 34 year old Juan Farias… on state parole after being convicted of shooting into an inhabited dwelling went to jail. He was ID’d through his tattoos (CA state outline w/ 4 stars, “Norte” over an eyebrow, one teardrop, … ) Booking charges were disorderly conduct- alcohol which triggered a parole violation. No charge for fighting. (SCPD Case # 24S-02528/ Booking # B-612882)
-the teardrops used to signify a knife attack in a state prison in an area w/ gun coverage. I don't know what they mean anymore. Farias didn't make it to jail until almost 4am. He had a little accident in the jail’s sallyport… he fainted.
The 400 Block of Broadway was closed for a period of time this morning at about 11:25am for a police response to a report of a 30 year old transient with a rifle.
The call was broadcast at about 11:11am describing a male subject with a stolen shopping cart crouched down with what appeared to the witness to have been a “long black rifle.” The witness described the subject as pointing at passing vehicles, and pedestrians. At one point pointing it at a family passing by.
Officers arrived, and began a tactical approach to the subject, but with some exposure. They began by closing the area to vehicle and foot traffic. Of course this all seemed to take a really long time. Not once did I hear the word “Bearcat” mentioned.
Police moved on the subject at 11:33am. 2 minutes later, he was arrested at gunpoint. The rifle was a piece of wood wrapped in black electrical tape.
The subject, 45 year old Brandon Manzanares, was run out for wants and warrants. Returns showed warrants for failure to appear for drug charges. He’s also on pretrial own recognizance for a felony burglary arrest in February that no one is in any particular hurry to prosecute.
The warrants were “cite and release,” so that’s what Officers did. There was no crime determined with the pretend gun or pretending you’re a mass shooter.

On the heels of SCPD arresting 63 year old Katheryn Louise Lichti for an East Side battery (24S-05261), at about 2:07pm police responded to the 300 Block of Pacific Ave on another battery detail. While enroute, Police were told that it was an employee of the business that was being attacked.
Police were on scene about 5 minutes later and were out with both involved. 33 year old Ricardo X Garcia was run out, and found to be on probation for burglary. He is not to possess stolen property, controlled substances, drug paraphernalia, … he had all that in his pockets.
Police took him to jail. No charges of battery. (SCPD Case # 24S-05264/ Booking # B-612894)

Over on River Street and northbound HWY-1 at about 4:30pm, a 40 year old beggar was seen on the median bleeding from the face and ears. He declined medical assistance. Police were asked to respond, because, y’know… he was on the median and possibly either under the influence or 5150. Heck! He could have been a “father raper” or a “mother stabber!” Alas, SCPD cleared the call “Beat info” and didn't respond at all.

At about 6:10pm, a business on the 1300 Block of Pacific Ave reported a shoplifter. Police were dispatched, and told that a male subject had entered the store, grabbed $5,000.00 worth of merchandise (silver jewelry) and then left without paying. Police were provided with a description of the thief and told that he was last seen headed towards North in a light blue Toyota Camry registered to an address in Antioch.
The license plate reader cameras showed the vehicle on the HWY-1 South exit at 6:22pm. CHP wasn’t notified. There were no arrests. (SCPD Case # 24S-05269)

Closer to 6:30pm, an E bike rider hit a large pothole on the Wharf, and crashed. (SCPD Case # 24S-05270)

Police were dispatched to DeLaveaga Park on an arson call at about 6:43pm. The suspect, an unknown race male wearing dark clothing, was seen lighting a tree stump on fire. SCFD sent Engine Crew s from two different Stations. They weren’t able to locate the stump fire, but apparently ran across 3 other fires in the vegetation surrounding the park. They were on scene for more than an hour. I saw zero arrests for arson in the booking sheets. (SCPD Case # 24S-05271)

At about 8:37pm, a vehicle was burning on Pacific Ave at Lincoln. All part of the Renaissance.

Read it and weep!!

Law & Order- the Absence of Common Sense

"In the criminal justice system, the people are represented by two separate yet equally important groups: the police, who investigate crime; and the district attorneys, who prosecute the offenders. These are their stories."

Yesterday at about 5:52pm, SCPD received a call for service from a residence on the 200 Block of High Street.

The call detailed a mother and daughter taking an afternoon nap and were awakened by a male subject who had forced entry and was standing over them “touching himself.”

The residence has had problems in recent days with a male who keeps violating a DV restraining order.

The 2 Patrol Officers began their response in a nonchalant manner, before being kicked in the ass by their Patrol Sergeant. They went Code 3 (lights and sirens) after that.

4 minutes later, Officers were in the area, and learned that the subject had fled on foot over the pedestrian bridge towards Holy Cross Church.

The suspect was finally ID’d by the victim as 26 year old Anthony Xavier Tavera- the named as restrained in a DV protective order. This is h the third time in the last 10 days that he’s crossed the line. He was arrested on the two previous instances, and jailed briefly for residential burglary on one of those arrests.

Of course, all of these crimes are occurring while he’s been enjoying pretrial release while the court struggles to determine if he’s sane or not to stand trial in a year old DV / weapons case.

Dear judge Siegel- you have two possible outcomes for your quest: either Tavera is crazy, or he’s a criminal. Either way he shouldn’t be on the streets. Please show some common sense in the future. Thank you.
