We proudly celebrate Yamilet Nieves Vega, one of our exceptional travel scholarship recipients who recently had the privilege of attending the 2023 NDiSTEM conference. ✈️🧬

Yamilet was a travel scholarship recipient for the 2023 Portland, Oregon conference where she gained priceless inspiration and confidence: "I’m a rising junior at Providence College. I received a travel scholarship to attend the 2023 NDiSTEM Conference in Portland, Oregon. Thanks to this scholarship, my financial constraints did not stop me from benefiting of such a wonderful opportunity. I was able to connect with professionals in my field of interest that is neuroscience. I feel that I really got the most out of the experience. Every speech that I heard, and conversation that I had filled me with great ambition. Seeing myself represented in the STEM fields helped truly realize that I can achieve great things as well. I left the conference feeling inspired and confident about my future in STEM.” 💬👩‍🔬

Meet Abigail Echo-Hawk, MA (Pawnee), one of our Featured Speakers at ! ⭐ 📊

Labeled the “Unapologetic Auntie of Indigenous Data” by the New York Times, Abigail Echo-Hawk is a national leader in public health research and the decolonization of data. She is revolutionizing the integration of Indigenous knowledge within public health systems and reshaping how governments, institutions, and medical professionals approach health for American Indians and Alaska Natives.

Echo-Hawk's groundbreaking research and tireless advocacy around violence against Indigenous women have spurred policy changes across all levels of government. As a leading voice in the missing and murdered Indigenous women and girls (MMIWG) crisis, she co-authored a report that brought national attention to the data issues and the staggering number of MMIWG cases in 71 urban cities across the U.S.

Echo-Hawk has served on a number of scientific research committees, including for the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine, which oversaw the development of a framework for an equitable distribution of the Covid-19 vaccine.

A proud citizen of the Pawnee Nation of Oklahoma, Echo-Hawk is the Executive Vice President of Seattle Indian Health Board and Director of its research division, Urban Indian Health Institute. Through these roles, she continues to champion Indigenous health, using her platform to inspire and drive meaningful change.

It's SACNAS Trailblazer Tuesday!

Today, we're honored to share Dr. Almaris Alonso-Claudio's journey in STEM with SACNAS, made possible by your incredible generosity. Her story is a testament to the lasting results of how your kindness impacts and nurtures diversity!

"SACNAS has been instrumental in my educational and career journey, providing crucial support and opportunities for advancement at various stages of my professional development.

As a student, I had the privilege of participating as a poster presenter, which allowed me to showcase my research and connect with peers and mentors in the field. During graduate school, SACNAS provided me with a platform to share my expertise as a speaker, enabling me to contribute to discussions on important scientific topics.

After obtaining my Ph.D., I continued my engagement with SACNAS by serving as a scientific panelist, where I shared my insights and experiences to inspire and guide the next generation of STEM professionals. Upon joining the FDA, I had the honor of representing the organization as both a scientific panelist and a recruiter at SACNAS events, leveraging my expertise to promote career opportunities within the federal government and support underrepresented individuals in pursuing scientific careers.

Through my involvement with SACNAS, I have not only expanded my professional network and honed my skills but also found a supportive community that values diversity and inclusivity in STEM. SACNAS has played a pivotal role in shaping my academic and professional growth, and I am grateful for the invaluable experiences and opportunities it has provided me along my journey." - Dr. Almaris Alonso-Claudio

Share your own impact story in the comments or tag someone who has been instrumental in your STEM journey.

Together, let's celebrate the power of generosity and the meaningful change it creates!
