Sent on behalf of John Quevedo, member of the LatinX Staff and Faculty Collective:

March 31 is César Chávez Day, a commemorative holiday
as proclaimed by President Barack Obama in 2014. We
celebrate the lifework of César Chávez and Dolores Huerta,
role models, and champions of labor rights, civil rights, and
human rights. César Chávez Day, a Day of Service, also serves
as a day to recognize the incalculable contributions of immigrant
farmworkers from many cultures who still are the backbone of
the agricultural, and many other industries, in California and the
United States. Let us educate future generations to learn lessons
from history, and to treasure our cultural and national icons César
Chávez and Dolores Huerta.

Thursday, March 30, Activity Hour
Please invite students to HSS 165 to see "Abuelita’s Kitchen: Mexican Food Stories" (2022), directed by Marie Bailey and produced by Dr. Sarah Portnoy, Professor of Food Studies at USC. The documentary shares the food stories of ten Indigenous, mestiza, Mexican-American and Afro-American grandmothers in Los Angeles, including their personal journeys as immigrants,
and their knowledge of traditional dishes. A conversation with producer Sarah Portnoy and film participants will follow.

Also, please invite students to the Main Campus Quad to celebrate
César Chávez and Dolores Huerta, with DJ music funded by the
Global Citizenship Council, thank you!

It is with absolute shock and sadness that the SMC Theatre Arts Department shares the news that our beloved stage technician, Ian Mitchell, passed away suddenly last night.

Ian was a member of our department since 2006 when he was first hired as a temp to help move us from our temporary space at the Airport campus into our new building. He soon became a valuable full-time staff member.

It is an understatement to say that he will be greatly missed.

Pasadena Playhouse would like to invite you and a guest to one of the first performances of Sanctuary City

Sanctuary City is centered around two undocumented teenagers who are navigating the pressures of an unstable home, prom invites, college applications, and graduation – and the threat of deportation. When G is naturalized, they hatch a plan to help B, but life, time, and distance threaten to push them apart. Can they make their way back to each other, or are the risks too great when they have everything to lose? From Pulitzer Prize-winner Martyna Majok, this edge-of-your-seat drama is both profoundly human and undeniably universal.
