Caffeine consumption can negatively impact fertility by potentially interfering with hormone levels and disrupting the menstrual cycle, which can make it more difficult to conceive. High caffeine intake has been associated with a reduced likelihood of successful conception and increased risk of miscarriage. It may also affect s***m quality and motility in men, further contributing to fertility issues. For those trying to conceive, it is often recommended to limit caffeine intake to moderate levels to minimize these potential risks.

Estrogen dominance is a condition where the body has too much estrogen relative to progesterone, leading to symptoms such as weight gain, mood swings, and irregular menstrual cycles. Some root causes include chronic stress, which can deplete progesterone levels, exposure to estrogen-mimicking molecules, gut dysbiosis, long term usage of hormonal birth control, and impaired liver function, which hinders the breakdown and elimination of excess estrogen.

If you’re not sure what your hormone levels look like, then testing is the right next step in your healing journey. Our hormone testing not only gives you information about what your hormone levels are, it can also reveal a bigger picture of what is going on in your body and help explain why you are experiencing various symptoms.

Insulin resistance has become a “trendy topic” unfortunately because it has been a pattern seen in many individuals. Insulin resistance occurs when cells in the body become less responsive to the effects of insulin, and as a result, blood sugar levels rise. It often develops gradually and can be influenced by genetics, lifestyle factors like diet and physical activity, and certain medical conditions. Managing insulin resistance typically involves lifestyle changes such as diet modification, exercise, and sometimes medication. These are 10 signs and symptoms that are commonly associated with an insulin resistance picture.

Cortisol and insulin are two essential hormones in the body that greatly impact the regulation of other downstream hormones and other various physiological processes.

Cortisol, often termed the stress hormone, is released by the adrenal glands in response to stress, helping the body cope with challenges. High levels of cortisol can inhibit the release of gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) from the hypothalamus, leading to disruptions in the menstrual cycle and decreased production of s*x hormones like estrogen and testosterone. Additionally, cortisol can interfere with the production and activity of thyroid hormones, impairing metabolism and energy balance.

On the other hand, insulin, produced by the pancreas, plays a crucial role in regulating blood sugar levels and promoting the uptake of glucose into cells. Insulin resistance, a condition where cells become less responsive to insulin, can lead to your body trying to compensate and increases in insulin production. This can further exacerbate the dysregulation of other hormones, such as growth hormone, which may contribute to metabolic dysfunction and impaired tissue repair. Moreover, insulin resistance can disrupt the balance of s*x hormones, leading to conditions like polycystic o***y syndrome (PCOS) characterized by hormonal imbalances and irregular menstrual cycles.

It’s also important to understand that cortisol and insulin interact to influence each other’s levels and activities in the body. High levels of cortisol can promote insulin resistance. Similarly, insulin resistance can lead to elevated cortisol levels, resulting a continued cycle of hormonal imbalance and metabolic dysfunction.

It’s so important to treat the actual root cause of hormonal imbalances rather than treat symptoms associated with hormonal imbalances. The way we can look at the root cause of these imbalances is by testing!

Our Feminade dried urine hormone test provides us with more of a functional picture of the hormonal processes that are going on in your body throughout a day. The dried urine test assesses hormone metabolites, which helps us understand how your body produces hormones, metabolizes hormones, and gets rid of them.

All this information that we are able to gather from the metabolites helps us understand why you may be experiencing certain symptoms and can help guide the Naturopathic Doctor on our team toward a more specific and targeted treatment approach.

Endocrine disruptors are chemicals that interfere with the body’s endocrine system, which is responsible for regulating hormones. These disruptors can mimic, block, or interfere with the body’s natural hormones, leading to adverse health effects.

Found in everyday products like plastics, pesticides, and personal care items, they can enter the body through ingestion, inhalation, or skin contact. While it is near impossible to completely avoid all endocrine disruptors, this is the list of the most common endocrine disruptor is that we encounter throughout our daily lives.

- Bisphenol A (BPA)
- Synthetic fragrences
- Dioxin
- Phthalates (found in plastics)
- Perchlorate
- Herbicides & Fungicides
- Parabens
- Perfluoroalkyl & Polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS, aka “forever chemicals”)
- Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs)

High cortisol levels, often caused by chronic stress, can impact your gut health by contributing to increased permeability of the intestinal lining, commonly referred to as leaky gut syndrome. This compromised barrier allows harmful substances such as toxins, undigested food particles, and bacteria to leak from the intestines into the bloodstream, triggering an immune response and inflammation. It’s also important to understand that this elevated cortisol triggers the release of noradrenaline by the gut, which affects the balance of gut bacteria, leading to dysbiosis, which further exacerbates gut dysfunction.

Leaky gut syndrome has been linked to various gastrointestinal conditions, autoimmune diseases, and systemic inflammation. Managing stress levels through relaxation techniques, adequate sleep, regular exercise, and a balanced diet can help mitigate the effects of high cortisol levels on gut health. Incorporating probiotics, prebiotics, and anti-inflammatory foods into the diet may also support gut integrity and reduce inflammation associated with leaky gut syndrome.

Some tips to help support your gut and nervous system are:
• Eating in a parasympathetic (rested) state. Having set meal times where you are able to slowly eat without distractions will help with your digestion!
• Support your adrenals with enough sleep, not over caffeinating yourself, staying hydrated, and fueling your body without skipping meals.
• Incorporating gut healthy and friendly foods into all of your meals. Foods like yogurt, pickles, kimchi, or other fermented foods help add probiotics. Other foods like fish, nuts, and avocado can be good sources of omega-3s.
• Focusing on incorporating some stress relief techniques to help manage cortisol levels like walking, meditating, breathing exercises, or yoga. These can help you to get out of your head and into your body.

Postpartum hair loss is caused by the various hormonal changes that occur after childbirth. The main hormones involved in postpartum hair loss include:

• Estrogen: During pregnancy, estrogen levels rise significantly, which can lead to thicker, fuller hair as it prolongs the hair growth phase (anagen phase) and reduces the shedding phase (telogen phase). However, after childbirth, estrogen levels drop rapidly, causing more hair follicles to enter the shedding phase.
• Progesterone: Like estrogen, progesterone levels rise during pregnancy and contribute to the maintenance of the hair growth phase. After childbirth, progesterone levels decline, which can also trigger hair shedding.
• Prolactin: Prolactin is a hormone involved in milk production during breastfeeding. Elevated levels of prolactin can contribute to postpartum hair loss, although the exact mechanisms are not fully understood.
• Thyroid hormones: Thyroid dysfunction, such as postpartum thyroiditis, is common after childbirth and can contribute to hair loss. Excess production of thyroid hormones, such as thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3), can accelerate the shedding phase (telogen phase) of the hair growth cycle. This can lead to increased hair loss and thinning.

While hormonal changes are the primary cause of postpartum hair loss, other factors such as stress, nutritional deficiencies, genetics, and changes in hair care routines can also contribute to hair thinning and shedding after childbirth. Postpartum hair loss is usually temporary, and hair typically regrows within a few months to a year after childbirth as hormone levels stabilize.

If you are curious about what your hormone levels look like, our at-home test kits, make it so easy to get a functional hormone panel! The information of this test can provide and help you figure out how to balance your hormones. Click the link in our bio for more information!

Polycystic o***y syndrome (PCOS) affects roughly one in ten women worldwide. PCOS is a complex condition characterized by elevated androgen levels, menstrual irregularities, and ovarian cysts. This hormonal condition can leave you with many side effects, including mood swings, irregular periods, and headaches.

PCOS causes intense fluctuations in your hormones, including estrogen and testosterone. These hormonal changes may contribute to headaches as some s*x hormones can affect the hormones your body uses to combat pain. When one hormone becomes unbalanced, it can have a domino effect on other hormones, too.
