Tragically, three Texas children have now lost their lives due to pediatric vehicular heatstroke. All three of these deaths were because children were forgotten in vehicles.

Remember never to leave children unattended in a hot vehicle, even for a short period. Cars can heat up rapidly! The temperature inside a vehicle can increase by 19 °F in just 10 minutes and continue rising, regardless of cracked windows.

If you see young children left alone in a vehicle for an extended period, especially in this Texas heat, and when the vehicle is not running, contact the Schertz Police Department or your local law enforcement agency immediately.

On August 27, 2024, at approximately 7:54 a.m., Schertz Police Department received an emergency call regarding a violent disturbance near the 21600-block of IH-35NB Access Road. Schertz PD Officers were immediately on scene and a male subject who was carrying a knife, fled the scene in a southernly direction toward the Schertz School of Science and Technology. Out of precaution, the school was placed on a lock down. Responding units quickly located and apprehended the suspect at the intersection of IH 35 Frontage Road and Fairlawn Ave. The School of Science and Technology was on lockdown for approximately 10 minutes during this incident.

Police Chief Jim Lowery stated, “We are thankful for the relationships that we continue to have with our public and private schools concerning school safety. This morning’s incident is a clear example of the importance of having established protocols and relationships in place to address such incidents. The suspect never entered the school property and the disruption to this morning’s school schedule was minimal”. When the suspect fled, he dropped the knife, however, officers were able to locate and recover the knife as they backtracked his path. We believe there is no further threat to the community.

The male subject is identified as 46-year-old Raul Aragon who appears to be homeless. Preliminary investigation has revealed that the suspect recently released from the Texas Department of Corrections (TDC) and is a registered s*x offender. He was arrested and transported to Comal County Jail and booked in for Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon (2nd Degree Felony) and Failure to Comply with S*x Offender Duty to Register Annually (3rd Degree Felony). This continues to be an ongoing investigation.

Hosting a great event doesn't have to be complicated, expensive, or involve an HOA. Here are some ideas for keeping it simple and sharing the costs.

- Email or hand-deliver homemade invitations to every neighbor on your block. Get the kids to help!
Host a front yard dessert potluck. Ask everyone to bring a lawn chair and a treat to share.
- Ask neighbors to turn on their lights and come outside for a walk after dinner.
- Say hello, introduce yourself, help new neighbors meet each other, and share contact information.

This week, our Community Projects Officer/PIO, Officer Kraft, was joined by the City of Schertz Communications Manager, Mrs. Christensen, and Schertz Fire Department Emergency Manager, Mr. High, and completed the Public Information Basics class.

The FEMA course taught them how to collect information, draft a message, provide a briefing, and disseminate messages to the public and news media during times of crisis.

We are seeing an uptick in vehicle thefts. The victims are locking their vehicles, but the thieves use a remote control code grabber. What is this? 🤔

A code grabber is 𝒂𝒏 𝒆𝒍𝒆𝒄𝒕𝒓𝒐𝒏𝒊𝒄 𝒅𝒆𝒗𝒊𝒄𝒆 𝒕𝒉𝒂𝒕 𝒄𝒂𝒏 𝒊𝒏𝒕𝒆𝒓𝒄𝒆𝒑𝒕 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒓𝒆𝒄𝒐𝒓𝒅 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒔𝒊𝒈𝒏𝒂𝒍𝒔 𝒕𝒓𝒂𝒏𝒔𝒎𝒊𝒕𝒕𝒆𝒅 𝒃𝒚 𝒓𝒆𝒎𝒐𝒕𝒆 𝒄𝒐𝒏𝒕𝒓𝒐𝒍𝒔. These devices are often used to gain unauthorized vehicle access, such as stealing or breaking into the vehicle.

𝐇𝐨𝐰 𝐜𝐚𝐧 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐭𝐞𝐜𝐭 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐯𝐞𝐡𝐢𝐜𝐥𝐞𝐬? You can block the signal from reaching your key fob by keeping the fob further in the interior of your residence and not close to your front door.

Remember to report suspicious activities in your neighborhood. If you see something, say something.

𝐒𝐜𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐭𝐳, 𝐓𝐗 (𝟖/𝟐𝟑/𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟒) – The motorcyclist has been identified at Damon Chambers (25 years of age) of Schertz, TX. For correction, the motorcyclist was transported to BAMC (Brooke Army Medical Center). This continues to be an ongoing investigation.

On August 21, 2024, at approximately 12:35 p.m., Schertz Police Department responded to the intersection of Schertz Parkway and Elbel Road following reports of a vehicle collision involving a motorcyclist. Preliminary investigation revealed that the motorcyclist was evading from Converse Police. The motorcyclist was last observed traveling northbound on Schertz Pkwy from FM 78 at a high rate of speed. Upon the Converse PD unit arriving at the intersection with Elbel Rd. on Schertz Pkwy the motorcyclist had already been involved in an accident.

The operator of the motorcycle was transported to SAMC in San Antonio. The motorcycle operator later succumbed to his injuries and will be identified pending next of kin notification. The intersection of Schertz Parkway continues to be temporarily closed while this traffic accident is being investigated with the support provided by Guadalupe County Precinct 3 Constables Office. This is an ongoing investigation and Texas DPS Accident Reconstruction Team was summoned to assist us with the traffic fatality investigation.

On August 16, 2024, at approximately 3:03 p.m., officers were dispatched to the intersection of Storm King and Black Butte following reports of a school bus collision involving a pedestrian. Upon the officers' arrival, a school bus, #159, from Schertz Cibolo Universal City ISD Transportation, appeared to have been involved in a collision with a pedestrian identified as an 8-year-old female who attends Sippel Elementary School. The victim was transported by ambulance with non-life-threatening injuries.

We are working collaboratively with the SCUC ISD and the victim to determine how this accident occurred. This is an ongoing investigation.

We want to thank the Schertz PD Citizens' Police Alumni Association who volunteered their time and efforts to the community and the safety of the students crossing Schertz Parkway at Pecan Drive. With the heavy congestion, their efforts kept the students safe while crossing the busy roadway.

During the first day of school, Schertz Officers were dedicated to all school zone areas within the City. Unfortunately, the community kept them busy, resulting in 26 traffic stops within a 4-hour period (7 a.m.- 10 a.m.). Excitingly, we are happy to announce that we did not receive any reports of accidents during this timeframe.

Remember, driver inattention and speeding in school zones are unsafe for everyone and can be heavy on a violator's pocketbook. We know the community wants to ensure the safety of the students, parents, and employees within the school zones, just like us. Community safety is everyone's responsibility.

Welcome back to school! Traffic will be a little heavier today, especially around the schools. Watch for the school buses, school zones, and our kiddos walking to school. Remember that two school zones are active from 7:00 am to 4:30 pm. Those zones are Curtiss Avenue (Schertz Elementary) and Elbel Road (Clemens H.S.). One street off Elbel that is included in the school zone is Westchester. Also, remember to watch for our Crossing Guards and pay attention to the directions given to drivers and pedestrians.

School starts Thursday, August 15, so let's keep students safe by slowing down and being aware of your surroundings.

SLOW DOWN🚸 ! The speed limit in school zones is 20 mph unless otherwise posted.

CELL PHONES PROHIBITED📱. Using a cell phone when driving through an active school zone is illegal.

OBEY CROSSING GUARDS. Watch for crossing guards at intersections and crosswalks, and follow their directions.

STOP FOR SCHOOL BUSES 🚌. Cars must stop in BOTH DIRECTIONS unless a Divided Highway (like Schertz Parkway) has a raised median or physical barrier. Then only traffic behind the bus stops.

REMEMBER! There are two all-day school zones on Elbel Road/Westchester Drive and Curtiss Avenue.

Traffic Tip Tuesday: School Buses

With school starting this week, our Traffic Tip Tuesday will discuss stopping for school buses. Texas Transportation Code 545.066 (https://bit.ly/2Xjbl5P) states a driver shall stop before reaching a school bus when the stop sign is activated. The driver may proceed once the stop sign is not activated, you are signaled to go by the bus driver, or the bus resumes motion. The picture below gives an example of when a driver needs to stop. Please stay safe, and when you are waiting for the school buses, keep an extra eye out for any child cutting in front or behind the bus.

The Schertz Police Department extends our deepest condolences to the Fort Worth Police Department and Sgt Randolph's loved ones.

As schools resume this Thursday, drivers must be extra cautious in and around school zones. Please adhere to the speed limit and reduce your speed. Respect the guidance of crossing guards and be vigilant when children board and exit from school buses.

Always give students extra room, and don't assume they are paying attention to your vehicle. Students are often distracted by mobile devices, listening to electronic devices, or by other students, and they may not be paying attention to their surroundings.

Please prioritize safety when driving and help ensure everyone makes it to school safely. Remember, not only is speeding unsafe, it is hard on your pocketbook.

With school starting back and everyone posting photos of their adorable children, please be mindful of revealing personal information about your child. Predators and scammers can use your child's full name, school name, grade, age, and other identifying tidbits. The safest practice is keeping personal information to a minimum, regardless of your privacy settings or friends.

On August 8, 2024, the Schertz Police Department initiated a report regarding a citizen who received a phone call from someone claiming to be a U.S. Border Patrol Agent and a Schertz Police Officer. Both phone numbers used reflected the Schertz Police Department number and U.S. Border Patrol number. The caller informed the citizen that his identity had been compromised and they needed to get online and fill out a form with their personal information. A variation of this type of scam is to threaten the victim with arrest unless the pay right away for an outstanding warrant.

Callers often will use the names of actual agents, deputies, or police officers, and they will disguise their phone number to make it look like they are calling from a local, state, or federal law enforcement agency. This practice of disguising the caller ID is known as “spoofing.”

Police Chief Jim Lowery stated, “Although scammers can be very convincing, the best way for someone to protect themselves from these scams is to simply hang up. Don’t be intimidated into providing personal details or financial information. Real officers are not going to ask for that type of information over the phone.” Anyone who has been the victim of a scam should notify their financial institutions and report it to their local police department. School starts on Thursday, August 15, for Schertz-Cibolo-Universal City ISD (SCUCISD)! We all have our backpacks ready, our lunch boxes and water bottles labeled, and all our supplies are fresh and ready to go, but have we prepared for our walk home?

Before school starts, make sure your children know:
▪️The route to and from school
▪️Your phone number
▪️Their home address
▪️Practice the walk/bike ride with them!

Remind them of pedestrian safety rules such as:
▪️Walking their bike across crosswalks, not riding them
▪️Stopping at crosswalks before crossing
▪️Looking in both directions before crossing
▪️Pay attention to their surroundings

Even older kids need reminders that may include:
▪️Not wearing earphones while walking
▪️Keep your head on a swivel and pay attention
▪️Stay on the sidewalk where provided
▪️Walk/bike in groups

Have you noticed our school lights are flashing, but school has yet to start? Don't be alarmed! The lights are being turned on to ensure they are working correctly and for the community to begin practicing slowing down when the school zone lights are flashing.
