The Vervet Forest
A Vision of the Vervet Monkey Foundation to create a wildlife reserve for Vervet Monkeys in South Af
The Vervet Forest is a project by the Vervet Monkey Foundation, a non-profit rehabilitation and rescue centre for Vervet monkeys established in 1993 in Tzaneen, Limpopo South Africa. Sadly many vervets are orphaned each year in South Africa by farmers or residents shooting them, snared, poisoned, used in traditional medicine or killed on the road by cars. The goal of the Vervet Forest is to create
Voluntary staff Reni from Hungary teaches volunteer Nine from Belgium how to tell the monkey foster mums & orphans apart so that she will be able to observe the babies drinking milk, the behaviour and interactions of the mums with the orphans and how to change their milk bottles in the milk feeding station so the orphans can feed themselves whilst their foster mum cares for them. Introducing orphans to monkey foster mums means that the babies can be hands off from humans from as young as 6 weeks old.
The last stage for these orphans will be when they join their new monkey family at the Holt & Barrington troop. If you would like to be a part of something meaningful and setting these little ones up for life with their new monkey families, come & join us by volunteering, intern or become part of our longer voluntary staff team. 15% off short term volunteering for those who arrive before 31st Dec 2023. www.vervet.za.org

Orphans Tufty (who arrived at 4 weeks old) & Kathleen (who was found alone) were introduced to monkey foster mums Millie & Percy at the Holt & Barrington troop a litte whie ago. Recently their orphan friend Paulie (who arrived shivering, bruised and covered in ticks) also joined them and little Mikey to follow. This group have been introduced in stages with a day or 2 apart as the babies like to cling to each other. Instead the goal is that they form a bond with an adult female who will be their monkey foster mum. Sometimes it's challenging to introduce 4 babies at once as the mums find it difficult to pick them up if they cling to each other but these mums are truly amazing. Orphans Yoda & Samber are also now out of human care and have joined monkey foster mums Karla & Kara adjacent to the Koko troop. Even though they are not their own babies, these females show so much love and care for these little orphans. They will join the rest of the Koko troop when they are 3 months old. We still need more volunteers to help care for the orphans, observe them with their monkey foster mums and watch them be integrated with their new family. 15% off the volunteering contribution for all short term volunteers who can arrive before 31st Dec 2023. www.vervet.za.org
💖🐵 Meet Elora #5
Our 5th orphan Elora was collected at the same time as Darby, able to be safety blankets for each other on the ride to the foundation. Approximately $ weeks old, Elora was sturdy and spunky, full of personality and charisma.
The only thing that we knew about her was that her and her mum were involved in a road accident. Unfortunately, her mum died and Elora was left unscathed, protected and safe on her mum's belly.
Elora seems settled in well, bouncing around and loved to play. Darby clung to her at night, using her as his own little teddy bear. She's loved her food and was quick to show off her skills by using the feeding cage. After overcoming a particularly bad bout of oral thrush, Elora was finally able to meet a Foster Mum. On Monday Elora joined TK, Bug and Anita at Skunkey Troop introcage with mums Pan and Martha.
Elora we are so happy you love your new mummy 🫶

The Vervet Forest The Vervet Forest Campaign aims to realise the long awaited VMF dream of purchasing 300-500 hectares of indigenous bush area in South Africa upon which the sanctuary can release rehabilitated troops.
The orphans have kept us busy so it's time to update you all on some of their progress... Orphans Atlas & Riccardo have been with their monkey foster mums Panacur & Ylena a while now alongside the Koko troop. In the adjacent area is Karla & Kara with orphans Yoda & Samber. All are doing great and the mums love them as if they are their own. In a few weeks they will join the large enclosure and meet their new monkey family. To follow their journey and watch longer videos, please do subscribe to our weekly youtube videos & watch our weekly youtube livestreams.

Orphan TK is already with her monkey foster mum Martha alongside the Skunkey troop and doing very well, she follows her, gets carried by Martha and they have a great bond. Of course Martha thinks she's already to join the troop but TK's orphan friends Elora, Anita & Bugaloo will be joining her along with some other foster mums. We also have to wait until the orphans are at least 3 months old before they can go out with their mums into the larger enclosures as at this age they move away more from mum which means they are able to find their milk feeding station in a bigger area rather than clinging to mum all the time.
Orphans Elora, Anita & Bugaloo will be meeting monkey foster mums later today as part of their next step in their rehabilitation process of joining a troop at the Vervet Monkey Foundation. Orphan TK (who was confiscated from people by the SPCA) is already with foster mum Martha and these 3 will join with Martha & other monkey mums so we are sure TK will be happy to see her friends again.
Introducing Orphan #4, Darby
Darby, our 4th orphan was collected from Nelspruit on the 26th October and brought back to the foundation. At around 5 weeks old, his face had started to darken, and he had 8 teeth through already.
Somehow, Darby found himself locked in an office garage for the weekend with no food or water, we can't even imagine how scary and confusing this must have been. When taken to the vets upon discovery, they suggested that he had a possible dislocation in his right arm. We took to the vets to confirm the diagnosis, but sadly the x-ray showed a terrible break that had healed badly. Surgery was necessary to relieve the pain and restore function. Thankfully our vet was able to act quickly and operate. Dardy was put on strict crate rest for 4 weeks and looked to be healing well, until a follow up x-ray showed the break had once again healed badly. However, this time around Darby is pain free and able to move, climb and play comfortably.
We have no knowledge of how he was injured or how he came to be alone, but he is here now, and he is getting all the comfort he needs.
Darby is actually named after one of our amazing American volunteers who is fantastic at taking care of the babies.
✨All of our orphans are named by VMF supporters, for a one-time fixed donation. If you'd like to name an orphan, please email [email protected] for more on how. All donations go toward initial medical costs and baby care supplies.

Baby Bugaloo Survives After Mother's Tragic Death This is the story of Baby Bugaloo, a ybaby monkey who was miraculously saved by passersby after his mother was electrocuted and died on the way to the vet. ...
Meet Anita #3
Teeny Anita, our 3rd orphan traveled all the way from Lephalale, 240 miles away after her mother was shot on a farm (just like Atlas). At just over 9 days old on arrival, she weighed just 313g and only had 2 teeny teeth just coming through.
This independent lady little didn't want any help with drinking from the bottle and was happy to put up with Riccardo's playing, including him bouncing on her. She's able to hold her own with the bigger boys, and rough and tumble with the best of them.
Full of sass and confidence, she is more than happy to explore and entertain herself. This year's number 1 sleeper, she doesn't need any help to drift off; a huge achievement as most orphans that arrive have trouble going to sleep & staying asleep. This makes her a dream to have on Nightshift!
This little superstar will meet her new monkey mum on Monday, joining big sister TK and experienced foster mum Martha. Together with fellow orphans Elora and Bugaloo, they'll join Skunkey Troop in the new year🌟
Best Friends 🫂
Rexie and Darby have been spending a lot of time together of late, both receiving special care as two once broken little boys (Rexie is recovering from a broken neck and Darby, a broken elbow).
And in special care they have formed a special bond ❤️ they love to play, eat and sleep together. Darby has benefited from a big brother and Rexie has benefited from a younger one! We have seen great improvement in Rexie's mobility in particular, since Darby joined him. Along with special therapies from volunteer Charlotte (an animal osteopath) Rexie is so very close to walking full time!
We are so proud of Rexie and Darby and we just LOVE this little friendship ❤️

Introducing Orphan #2, Riccardo
Our 2nd orphan, Riccardo was collected on the 21st October from Polokwane after being found on a farm. We are not sure of his backstory as he passed hands a couple of times before we were called out to collect him.
Riccardo had 6 teeth with 2 starting to come though so he was older than Atlas at around 4-5 weeks. He followed in Atlas' footsteps of learning the FC quickly and became a big drinker, over 200ml per day most days!
He has a very calm personality, loves to explore and his favourite thing to do is play! He loves jumping, pouncing and showing us his teeth with his play face.
On the 2nd of November Riccardo met experienced Foster Mum Panacur and since then they've been inseparable! The ever happy, bouncy Riccardo is loving life and can't wait to go into troop with 'brother' Atlas and Auntie Yllena soon ❤
