Happy Summer!
Celebrate your body and refresh your spirit with massage! Our precious, sunshiny season is upon us and prioritizing bodywork is a great way to ensure you are able to fully enjoy the summer. Schedule your monthly sessions now and have one less thing to think about while the season flies by.
I have a lot of appointments available next week as my kid got into a camp she’s been hoping for. We canceled our vacation so she can attend; sad for me but I’m looking forward to seeing you!
P.S. We have Air Conditioning to keep the room the perfect temperature for your session!

Happy National Haiku Poetry Day!
Is your belly happy? Our core is an essential part of the body that is so often skipped during massage.
I love massaging bellies and recently took this visceral massage class focused on supporting the abdominal organs. Adding these simple, gentle techniques to a session can help increase digestion, decrease anxiety, and facilitate a sense of wholeness and wellbeing. Excited to incorporate relaxing belly work into my massage sessions!

I’m all about relaxing the body through ease. You don’t have to hold that. You can let go.
This literal grounding practice is another way to remind yourself sometimes habits are just habits and don’t always serve our best interests. Noticing these unwanted habits is the first step towards breaking them.
“the process of lying down on a hard, flat surface for up to 20 minutes is an effective way to shift the nervous system to a state where both body and mind can break free from what could be unhelpful repetitious cycles.”

I'm very excited to be incorporating McLoughlin Scar Tissue Release into my sessions. This is a gentle technique that is very effective for fully healed scars that are at least 8 week post-incident. It even works on scars that are decades old!
Surgical scars, injury scars, Cesarean scars, trauma wound scars, acne scars, burn scars, scars from childhood, internal scar tissue creating restrictions within the body that cannot be seen from the outside, and scars that seem unrelated to chronic pain but contribute greatly to it can all be treated with this technique.
The benefits of this work may include:
-greater freedom of movement
-increased energy
-improved range of motion
-less sensitivity
-decreased numbness
-scar integration (no longer feels like there is a “spotlight on it”)
-aesthetic improvement
I look forward to sharing this powerful technique with you!
Do you have scars that are impacting your daily life, in large or small ways?
Often, we think scar tissue ‘is what it is’ and cannot be changed. This is false! There are powerful bodywork techniques that can ease the restrictions caused by scar tissue and free our bodies and minds in positive ways!
I’m a massage therapist specializing in McLoughlin Scar Tissue Release. The benefits of this work include: greater freedom of movement, improved range of motion, increased energy, less sensitivity or numbness, scar integration (no longer feels like there is a “spotlight on it”), as well as aesthetic improvement.
If you have a scar that is impacting your life, I’d love to help! You may book a session below or check out my website. Happy to answer any questions you have about the process as well, either in the comments or privately.
Photo used with client’s permission. This is a 16 year old scar from an ovarian cyst removal surgery. After 3 rounds of treatment, the client experienced less tightness in their abdomen and better range of motion while twisting, as well as the aesthetic improvement seen in the after photo on the right.
It recently came to my attention that Facebook showed Somnia as being temporarily closed. We are in fact open and have been since I was fully vaccinated in March 2021. Hope to see you soon!
Hands are amazing! What we touch and how we touch it makes a huge difference in our quality of life.
“Grandma, how do you cope with pain?”
“With your hands, honey. If you do it with your mind instead of relieving the pain, it toughens even harder.”
“With your hands grandma?”
“Yes, our hands are the antennae of our soul. If you move them; knitting, cooking, painting, playing or sinking them into the ground, you send care signs to the deepest part of you and your soul lights up because you’re paying attention to it. Then signs of pain will no longer be necessary.”
“Hands are really that important?”
“Yes my daughter. Think of babies: they start to know the world through the touch of their hands. If you look at the hands of old people, they tell you more about their life then any body part. Everything that is done by hand is said to be done with the heart. Because it’s really like this: hands and heart are connected. Masseurs know well: when they touch someone with their hands, they create a deep connection. It is precisely from this connection that healing comes. Think of lovers: when they touch their hands, they make love in a more sublime way.”
“My hands grandma.... how long I haven’t used them like this!”
“Move them, my love. Begin to create with them and everything within you will begin to move. The pain will not pass away. And instead what you do with them will become the most beautiful masterpiece and it won’t hurt anymore. Because you have been able to transform its essence.”

So thrilled with my new anatomy posters! I do a lot of work with ligaments and love that they are highlighted here.
In the coming days, I’ll showcase some of my favorite structures and how they impact our everyday lives. What anatomical features are you interested in learning more about? Drop me a comment and I’ll feature them soon!
An excellent message on our perception of pain. Thanks Massage and Fitness Magazine!
The sound of the ocean is so relaxing! One of my dear clients gifted me a sound machine and now we can enjoy the soothing rhythm of waves during massage sessions.
Book today to experience a mental beach getaway without leaving the city!
None of us expected the pandemic would still be disrupting our lives 17 months after it began. Working from home was down for awhile, but using our dining rooms as offices is starting to take its toll. We’ve developed new habits and some of them are not serving our bodies well!
If you are able, try to improve your ergonomics by getting an external keyboard so you can raise your laptop, finding a comfortable and adjustable chair, and challenge yourself to keep both feet on the ground for part of the day.
Check in with your body throughout the day and notice when you are holding extra tension that is not productive. Remind yourself to let it go!
Don’t forget to take breaks and move your body. Bodies want to move, that’s what they are for!
Some tips for enjoying a great massage session!
If you have additional suggestions, leave them in the comments 🤩
Shoulders are amazing! Check out this art showing some of what’s going on beneath the skin! Our muscles work in collaboration with our joints, bones, and fascia to move us through the world. If yours are feeling a bit stuck, massage can help!
Start the weekend feeling relaxed and comfortable in your body!
Hope you’re managing to stay cool during this heat wave! Here’s a recipe for the DIY gel ice packs that have been saving my clients and myself the past few days:
1 part isopropyl alcohol
3 parts water
Combine in a zip lock bag (I double up to prevent leaks!)
Freeze and enjoy!
You can make them more solid by using more water or slushier by using more alcohol. Be sure to put cloth between the skin and the gel pack! I like to use a pillowcase.
Stay cool!
After a long week, I’m enjoying my hammock and geeking out on human anatomy. I use “bony landmarks” to help me understand which internal structures I’m working on. Our bodies are so cool and complicated!
What could be better than starting the long weekend deeply relaxed?
Interesting article on whether or not to use ice after an injury. Cold is not as beneficial to healing the body as we once thought!
“But for now, his study’s findings suggest... that damaged, aching muscles know how to heal themselves and our best response is to chill out and leave the ice packs in the cooler.”
Ice for Sore Muscles? Think Again. Icing muscles after strenuous exercise is not just ineffective, it could be counterproductive, a new study in mice suggests.
