PUBPOL 599B Special Topics: Water Law & Policy (4) with Philip Womble
This course will examine how society distributes and safeguards its vital natural resource, water. It will delve into the legal and policy frameworks in the United States concerning water resource management, with a primary focus on the western states. Additionally, we will explore international law and policies related to water resources for comparative analysis.

Incoming First Year Undergraduates: Take a First-Year Interest Group (FIG) cluster of courses for an introduction to public policy. This autumn, we’re paired with and . A FIG is a small community of incoming first-year students that take a group of classes together during their first quarter and is a great way to connect with others on this big campus!

We were honored to host this year's and provide a space for scholars from across the world to share ideas and build community. Meet two more scholars who will be with us this summer: Sochea Chhay from Beloit College studying quantitative economics, and Ayanna Hill from Tulane University studying international relations & business management.

Our JSI scholars arrive in one week! Anna Varveris from Adelphi U and Kierra Shaw from CUNY Hunter College will be among those joining us for seven weeks to, among other things, gain exposure to the breadth and richness of public service in the Pacific Northwest through experiential learning opportunities including mentorship, field trips, and engagement with community-based practitioners, regional leaders, and elected officials.

Last week, we hosted the 2nd annual Graduating Student Identity Celebration & Awards, which was created to provide a space to celebrate the accomplishments and contributions of our graduating students who hold identities such as: first generation, BIPOC, LGBTQIA+, student parent, veteran, international student, neurodivergence, those with disabilities, etc.

Welcome to two more of our Junior Summer Institute (JSI) Scholars! Jenuel Camacho, a Political Science major from the University of Puerto Rico, and Nathalie Saladrigas a Political Science major from Boston University will spend seven weeks this summer at the Evans School learning to analyze and evaluate policies under the guidance of experienced policy practitioners and academics. The combination of analytic skills and substantive knowledge about contemporary policy issues provides the Scholars with excellent preparation for graduate programs in public policy.

Congratulations to Anastasia Preradovic, Ny Thi Ha, and Jinie Chon on presenting their research at the UW's Undergraduate Research Symposium! All three have worked as research assistants at the Social Policy & Identity Research (SPIR) Lab run by Evans faculty Ines Jurcevic. Ny and Anastasia presented their joint project on communicating diversity, equity, and inclusion and social identities as a poster entitled, "The Intersection of Social Identity and DEI Management in the Public Sector" Jinie presented the research she's worked on since winter 2023 in a talk entitled, "The Impact of Confederate Monuments on Black and White Voters in the US."

The Evans School Junior Summer Institute (JSI) program is designed to broaden participants’ academic and professional horizons. In addition to interacting with and learning from talented peers, JSI participants learn to analyze and evaluate policies under the guidance of experienced policy practitioners and academics. The combination of analytic skills and substantive knowledge about contemporary policy issues will provide undergraduates with excellent preparation for graduate programs in public policy.

A warm welcome to two more of our Junior Summer Institute (JSI) Scholars - Amisa Ramadhani and Maya La Croix -- who will be joining us next month for a seven-week intensive program with a curriculum that includes economics, quantitative methods, policy analysis implementation & evaluation, and leadership & community engagement – all designed to sharpen students’ quantitative, analytic, and leadership skills.

Part of the Public Policy and International Affairs (PPIA) Fellowship Program, the UW Evans School’s Junior Summer Institute (JSI) provides undergraduate students across disciplines with a deeper appreciation of current issues and trends in public policy, a greater understanding of career opportunities in public service fields, and enhanced knowledge and skills to support their future pursuit of careers in public policy. The program is open to students who are entering their senior year of undergraduate study.

This Earth Day, we'd like to give a shout out to the Bullitt Foundation for providing a generous 4:1 matching challenge that helped raise a total of $125,000 from committed alumni and friends in support of the Harrison Endowed Fellowship for Environmental Interns program. Evans is a leader in the environmental policy space, currently ranked as the #2 graduate school in the U.S. for Environmental Policy & Management by U.S. News & World Report. This funding will ensure we can permanently support two paid internships each summer that provide real-world, robust policy experiences at local host organizations. From adapting to remote work and fostering employee resilience to reimagining service delivery, our panelists will share what we know, both from research and practice, about the complex issues facing public sector leaders today at the local and federal levels. We'll have an honest exploration of the hurdles ahead and the innovative strategies needed to navigate them effectively in today’s workforce.

Evans School fellowship recipients and donors gathered for a night of connection last week. Panelists and Evans alumni Gloris Estrella, MPA '15, and Aileen Balahadia, MPA '02, were on hand to offer advice gleaned from their professional experience and recount fond memories of their time at Evans.
