At 60 years old, women’s boutique owner Charlotte is no stranger to mammograms, having had them regularly for the past 20 years. Before launching ‘Charlotte’s Classy Closet’ in Bossier City, her previous job was at an employer-sponsored healthcare system, so she knew a thing or two about healthcare. When she decided to get her next mammogram, she knew just what to look for, but she also understood that healing involved more than just the body; it was also spiritual.
It was this belief that drew her to CHRISTUS. Because of her strong Christian faith, she fully appreciated our mission to extend the healing ministry of Jesus Christ.
To Charlotte, mammograms are crucial because cancer, especially breast cancer, is a deadly threat to women. She’d already lost two people to cancer and did not want to be next. She reasoned that a preventative procedure was worth the peace of mind.
“It might be uncomfortable, but it could save your life one day,” Charlotte said.
Her mammogram experience with CHRISTUS, however, would be far from uncomfortable. Instead, it was one she described as ‘fabulous.’
“Diane was just so knowledgeable and thorough,” Charlotte recalled. “She shared really great information about the 3D mammogram and about breast health, and it made me feel a lot better.”
Today, Charlotte encourages others who may be on the fence about getting a mammogram to utilize the preventative care their insurance provides. She deeply appreciates being able to rely on CHRISTUS for her health needs, both physical and spiritual.

The cherished statue of Jesus, which has been part of the hospital's history since 1959, found a new, more prominent home at the front of CHRISTUS Highland Medical Center.

Originally donated by the hospital's women's guild to the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word, the statue stood in front of Schumpert Hospital for 55 years. After spending the last decade in a side courtyard, it has been rededicated to symbolize the hospital's faith-based mission.

Happy 4th of July! We wish you a safe, joyful and memorable holiday filled with laughter, love and good health. 🎉🎆

07/03/2024

The Fourth of July is right around the corner, and we hope everyone has a happy and fun holiday! Dr. Ryan Brown, CHRISTUS Highland Hospital emergency room director, said it’s important to follow safety precautions when preparing to celebrate with fireworks.

“Some of the biggest safety tips are reading instructions carefully, always use under adult supervision, never use indoors, wear appropriate protective gear, including safety glasses, and avoid alcohol use during fireworks,” Brown said. “Independence Day is always a great time to celebrate with fireworks. However, they must be handled with the utmost respect and care to avoid bodily harm.”

The celebration is meant to be fun, and CHRISTUS Health wants to make sure you’re keeping your health and well-being in mind.

Preventative chemotherapy, also known as adjuvant chemotherapy, has been in the news this summer. This targeted approach focuses on cancer cells that primary treatment may not have eliminated. Dr. Deepika Ralla, Hematology and Oncology at CHRISTUS Cancer Center, explains that depending on the type of cancer, adjuvant chemotherapy can target cancer cells left in the body after initial treatment. This knowledge empowers patients and caregivers to take the right step in their treatment journey. While it does require more time in treatment, it significantly decreases the likelihood of cancer recurrence.

As a health system, we recognize the significance of Juneteenth in the journey toward equality and justice. Let us all reflect on our history and when such reflection is painful, may we turn to God and His abundant grace to trust Him for our future.

Quick reflexes and CPR training can make a world of difference in critical situations. During National CPR and AED Awareness Week, we recognize the importance of these life-saving measures. Rob Kenney, a physical therapist, and his team at CHRISTUS Shreveport Bossier experienced this firsthand when a patient suffered a sudden cardiac arrest during a routine session at their outpatient clinic.
Rob and another therapist performed CPR, reviving their patient within a minute. EMS arrived minutes later to transport the patient to the hospital.
Incidents like these remind us of the importance of CPR training, having an AED available, and having a reliable team.

Gloria Cole, an admission clerk in the radiology department at CHRISTUS Highland Medical Center, knew something was wrong when she attempted to enter her password on her computer at work.
"The screen kind of went funny, and I got agitated," she recalled.
Gloria's supervisor wheeled her to the ER when she could not answer questions. There, Gloria learned she was having an acute stroke. She was given the clot-buster drug, tPA (Tissue Plasminogen Activator), which works by dissolving blood clots that block blood flow to the brain, restoring the flow to the regions affected by a stroke and limiting the risk of damage and functional impairment.
Following a few days in Intensive Care, she was cleared to go home.

Remember, every second counts during a stroke. Learn more about B.E.F.A.S.T. and our stroke care program at christus.io/strokecare.

In 2014, the CHRISTUS Foundation Shreveport-Bossier launched the Hour Club, a group of Associates who wanted to give back to the ministries they serve. Many Associates generously join the club by donating the equivalent of one hour per pay period in benefit of the program(s) near and dear to their hearts. Last week, members of the Hour Club were treated to lunch in Shreveport and Coushatta. More than 80 Associates currently give back through the Hour Club, donating to programs like Children's Miracle Network Hospitals, Nursing and Allied Health Associate scholarships, the Cancer Center and the Associate Assistance fund. Thank you to each and every Hour Club member for continuing to go above and beyond for our health system! 💗 If you are an Associate and looking to give back with the Hour Club, please visit https://christusfoundationshreveportbossier.org/give/agc/.
