Lost&Found staff members were among nearly 600 people who attended the South Dakota Su***de Prevention Conference in Sioux Falls on August 1 & 2, a portion of the many people working on su***de prevention in South Dakota.
Attendees were encouraged to hear the latest data, which showed that the number of su***des in South Dakota has declined for the second straight year.
"This continued progress is a sign of hope for our state and a reflection of collective efforts statewide to invest in and deliver prevention and postvention services," said Erik Muckey, Lost&Found CEO/Executive Director.
“I am deeply proud of our team and organization for leading the charge on House Bill 1079—which allocated $2 million for K-12 and post-secondary su***de prevention and postvention programs—and continuing to deliver on that work by providing peer mentorship, data services, and su***de loss survivor programs across the state of South Dakota. With impacts across 13 different institutions of higher education in South Dakota, Lost&Found is living into its ideal of ‘doing more to prevent su***de’ and contributing to the state’s efforts to reduce su***de."

According to the CDC, one way to build resilience and reduce the risk of su***de is to have strong connections with other people. Today--even if the name of the day has "independence" in it--is a great day to build those connections.
As you enjoy the food and fireworks, take time to strengthen your connections with friends and family, and if you can, create a few new connections today!

🌟✊🏾 Honoring Juneteenth ✊🏾🌟
As we celebrate the triumph of freedom and justice this Juneteenth, let's remember that liberation extends beyond physical chains—it encompasses mental well-being too. 🧠💖
This day reminds us of resilience, community, and the ongoing fight for equality. But let's also acknowledge the mental toll of systemic oppression and the importance of healing.
Let's use this Juneteenth to prioritize our mental health, to amplify Black voices in mental health advocacy, and to foster spaces of understanding and support for all. Together, let's continue the journey toward collective healing and empowerment. 🌿💫

Lost&Found's Education & Postvention Manager Dakotah Jordan was recently featured in Sioux Falls Simplified discussing mental health.
"I would like to think this is changing, but when we hear the words mental health, it has a negative connotation. People assume you're talking about mental illness. We don't talk about it as a neutral term, and it is – just like physical health is a neutral term."
