In honor of , we would like to do a shout out to two of our long-time ReStore volunteers, Nicole and Gordon.

Gordon has been donating his time at the ReStore since 2016. He helps people drop off donations and assists customers throughout the store. Nicole began volunteering in 2018 and is our Saturday cashier extraordinaire! The Habitat for Humanity ReStore Smyrna is just one of the many ways you can volunteer your time to further Habitat’s mission if construction isn’t your thing!

Today’s is James Currie, our new ReStore Manager! James has worked for the ReStore since the day it opened eight years ago. He was motivated to work for the Habitat family after being a volunteer in another state in the past.

“My mother was a recipient of a Habitat home out of state and worked at the local ReStore in the city where she lived,” says James. “When the opportunity arose, I chose to give back to the community.”

James says he has loved the experience of building relationships with customers and future homeowners. “Watching them have their homes dedicated has been a blessing,” he says. “Seeing them smile and their families cheer when the keys are handed over during the ceremony is something special that I will never forget. The changing of lives by just having a place to call their own is beautiful to witness.”

James says the ReStore’s customers are like extended family. “You know their names, their families, and what going on with them through their projects.”

He says working as a team giving, serving, helping others has meant everything. “I can say it a hundred ways, but it only comes down to giving back.” Congratulations James, we are so excited for you to take the helm!

In honor of , there are many reasons people volunteer with Habitat. Nancy Boccella, is one of our amazing Habitat for Humanity ReStore Smyrna volunteers.

“I love the concept of repurpose/re-use, recycle,” says Nancy. “After 30 years of working and not having time to volunteer in my community, I am loving volunteering now that I am retired.” Thank you, Nancy for contributing your time toward our mission!

Charlene is retiring! Today for our , we are celebrating the career of ReStore Manager, Charlene Rogers. Charlene has long been the smiling face and leader of the ReStore. She actually began her career with Habitat in 2008 and has been with Smyrna ReStore location since it began being built in 2015.

“My passion has always been working with people and product and believe me, the ReStore supplies plenty of both!” She continues, “Most importantly, though, I feel like I’m part of a bigger picture here, one that changes lives through something a lot of us take for granted, homeownership.”

Charlene has overseen the growth and success of the ReStore over the years and has earned this well-deserved retirement. Charlene sums up her place in the Habitat family as this: “At the end of the day, I know my hard work and dedication has helped lift families out of substandard housing through the money we generate in sales. It’s really the best job I have ever had and one I can truly be proud of … I have a big heart for Habitat!”

Charlene, we thank you from the bottom of our heart to yours, and your 16 years of service. You will always be a part of the Habitat Family. Enjoy your well-earned retirement!

We need your urgent help! Email your legislators by FEBRUARY 21st to pass HB 101 in the Georgia Senate Finance Committee. HB 101 has passed the Georgia House of Representatives and is in the Senate Finance Committee. We must pass HB 101, which would provide 20 million dollars of taxpayer-directed funding for Habitat affiliates to build cost-manageable housing, a necessary step to address housing affordability in Georgia. This topic is becoming more salient than ever, and solutions must be implemented to solve this dire issue facing residents across the state.
Call to Action: Email or call the Senate Finance Committee Members to tell them you support HB101:

We are proud to announce!!

We are thrilled to announce that we have been awarded the highest rating as a “Four-Star” charity, by the leading independent evaluator in charitable giving, Charity Navigator!

Since 2001, Charity Navigator has empowered donors by providing free access to data, tools, and resources to guide philanthropic decision-making. With more than 200,000 charities rated, their comprehensive ratings reflect the cost-effectiveness and overall health of a charity’s programs, including measures of stability, efficiency, and sustainability. These metrics inform donors of not just where their dollars are going but also what their dollars are doing. Drawing from a knowledge base of research, analysis, and constituent feedback, their team develops ratings that are both analytical and responsive to the data needs of users.

Our affiliate has worked extremely hard to meet the highest standards in the four areas by which Charity Navigator measures. Their Encompass Rating System™ provides a comprehensive analysis of charity performance across four key domains:

Impact & Results
Find out how much benefit the charity’s program(s) achieve relative to the cost required to run it.

Accountability & Finance
Find out if the charity is accountable, transparent, financially efficient, and sustainable.

Leadership & Adaptability
Find out if the charity has the leadership capacity, strategic plan, and ability to adapt or respond to changing circumstances to better achieve its mission.

Culture & Community
Find out if the charity implements practices that strengthen its overall organizational health and is responsive to its beneficiaries.

This is an award to be very proud of as a Habitat affiliate. Thank you to my staff, the Board of Directors, and everyone in the Habitat family who has helped us become the respected organization we are today.
