Last Thursday we welcomed back sponsor, Nissan North America, on the Marietta build alongside future homeowner, Sandra. Nissan employees, led by David Dinda, Regional Service Development Manager, gathered to work on Week 3 of the build, completing insulation and installing the exterior siding.

We had a total of 14 volunteers from Nissan working alongside Sandra and the Cobb Interfaith Habitat Coalition.

Future homeowner, Sandra, has been an Administrative Assistant in Development Services at the City of Marietta since 2014, helping to make the public’s experience with the city go smoothly. She lives in an apartment complex in Kennesaw but is seeking a greater sense of community through homeownership. An affordable mortgage did not seem attainable but being selected to build with Habitat for Humanity changed that. Now, she’ll benefit from the financial stability of monthly mortgage payments that aren’t subject to major increases – which will enable her to retire comfortably when she’s ready. Sandra most looks forward to cooking in a sunny kitchen, hosting holiday gatherings, and has always said that when she becomes a homeowner, she would get a dog! She is thankful to the sponsors for using their time, talents, and gifts to make homeownership possible for her.

Thank you, Nissan for your continued dedication to Habitat’s mission and giving a hand up to enable more people to become first-time homeowners!

Congratulations to Di’Ana and Tracey on closing on your new homes today! Welcome to homeownership! Their dedication ceremony was just held on Saturday, and now both ladies officially have the keys and can start moving in.

Di’Ana (pictured with daughter, Saniah), is a Marietta City Schools bus driver. She says she originally chose this line of work because it provided the perfect schedule to spend quality time with her daughter Saniah, now 15. The family currently lives in an apartment in Marietta. She is most excited to break the cycle of renting and provide her daughter with a forever home that can be passed down for generations.

Tracey is a Sanitation Foreperson with the City of Marietta Sanitation Services Division of Public Works. She has worked for the City of Marietta for almost 20 years and was the first woman employee in the department! She is excited to have a kitchen where she can bring others together and provide space for her 85-year-old mother.

On Saturday we dedicated the final two Habitat homes of 2023! The incredible Catholics 4 Habitat coalition built two simultaneous, neighboring homes on Frasier Street in Marietta during the last nine weeks. Located on lots donated by the City of Marietta, these homes are the coalition’s 48th and 49th Habitat homes with us. This group has never missed a year of building in 31 years!

We especially want to acknowledge coalition board members, Kevin Reilly who oversees fundraising, Jim Nee who acts as House Leader, and Safety Leader, Theresa Mulhair. These three worked tirelessly to make these two homes a reality.

Habitat homes are built through collaboration, and these two builds were made possible because of several generous sponsors coming together. In addition to the Catholics 4 Habitat coalition, thank you to the Lutheran Coalition for Habitat for Humanity, Publix Super Markets Charities, SouthState Bank, and PowerPlan for helping to sponsor these two homes.

A special thanks to the City of Marietta, Ga., Government for putting the groundbreaking Marietta Public Service Housing Program in place at the beginning of the year, and all our generous sponsors for raising the money and providing the volunteers to build these two beautiful houses. The Habitat team is grateful to everyone involved, and what a fantastic way to wrap up our long build season and get these two public servants home for the holidays! Because of their dedication, City of Marietta public servants Tracey and Di’Ana will be homeowners by the end of the year!

Today’s is Georgianna Baker, Program Analyst in the Field Office of the U.S. Dept. of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). She and her colleagues sponsored and volunteered for a build day this fall for Tanisha, our Veteran homeowner in Douglasville.

Georgianna says she first learned about our Veteran build for Tanisha in July when she was looking for an organization for HUD staff to partner with for community service work. She says Tanisha’s build was very appealing as she and other team members are Veterans themselves and have an affinity for veterans. “In addition to her veteran status, the build initiative coincides with HUD’s mission of helping create and sustain affordable housing (homeownership) nationally,” she explains. “The opportunity was a perfect alignment of two entities with a singular goal.”

Georgianna says the overall experience was nothing but amazing. “Everyone worked together and made the necessary adjustments as needed to accommodate Tanisha’s need. We laughed, cried, sang, ate, and danced alongside Tanisha during the day.”

Team members Mark Dominick, Regional Director, and April Mabry, Account Executive also participated in the build day and Tanisha’s dedication. “The experience was full of mixed emotions – we cried because of the blessing that we were fortunate to participate in; we laughed as the minister who blessed the home was funny; we were sad and overwhelmed to learn that her eldest son passed away. His name is Dominic and our Regional Director, who was also in attendance at the dedication, is named Mark Dominick. Along with Tanisha, we recognized (as she eloquently expressed) that the dedication was one way that her son was expressing his love for her. It was a blessing to attend a memorable occasion.”

Thank you, Georgianna and all the HUD team members for joining us in the Habitat family!

Please consider supporting Habitat in honor of Giving Tuesday today. Help us reach our goal of doubling the impact on local families needing affordable housing.

Thank you to everyone who has made a gift already to help enable more families in need to be in their own homes for the holidays. Together, we have raised $6,014 so far and counting! This puts us at 12% of our goal, and we're hoping more community partners can help us reach it.

A generous supporter of Habitat for Humanity NW Metro Atlanta has pledged to match all gifts, dollar for dollar, up to $50,000, and there is still time to help.

All gifts received by December 31, 2023, will count toward this initiative and help further our mission of building decent, affordable homes for families in need in Cobb, Douglas, and Paulding counties.

That's correct - your donation will now be DOUBLED.

$25 = $50 $50 = $100 $75 = $150 $100 = $200

Your donations help families like:

Army veteran, Tanisha, to will finally have a place of her own instead of renting a room in a friend's home, and have a permanent home she owns and can build memories in with her 19-year-old son, Aidan.

Samantha, a single mother and Certified Medical Assistant, to provide a home in a safe neighborhood, where her nine and four-year-old daughters, Aaliyah and Marley, can play outside and have their own space.

Methany, Social Emotional Learning Teacher at Marietta Middle School, to live minutes from work in Marietta instead of an hour, and for she and her husband Kelcey to own a home big enough for their daughter and two grandsons to live with them and begin building generational wealth for their future.

Thank you for your continued support!

Today’s is Rhonda Close, Owner of The CFC Group in Atlanta. The company represents a full range of furniture and textile solutions for corporate, healthcare, hospitality, and higher education in the Southeast.

Rhonda says she first heard about Habitat for Humanity of NW Metro Atlanta through her son’s involvement in the Holy Innocents’ Episcopal School Habitat home-build project. Her son, Giles, is a junior at Holy Innocents’ and helped raise money and build several weekends for Samantha’s new home. Additionally, the company helped sponsor the build.

Rhonda says her son’s experience was amazing! “This experience was very impactful for my son. The day the house was dedicated to Samantha and her two girls was very touching and rewarding.”

Following the home’s dedication, Rhonda generously made a large high-end corporate furniture donation to the Habitat ReStore in Smyrna.

The CFC Group donated more than 70 pieces of nearly new contract grade furniture samples. “I was impressed to learn that the profits from ReStore sales are used to buy the land for Habitat homes,” she says. “I am thrilled that the CFC Group contribution is going towards such a good cause.”

Rhonda says she would like to remain involved with Habitat. “I didn’t choose Habitat, it chose us. Had it not been for the opportunity that Jessica Gill presented to my son and his fellow classmates I would never have been involved in a project like this. Because of this experience, The CFC Group can now help the ReStore and Habitat long term.” Thank you, Rhonda, and welcome to the Habitat family!

Today, along with members of the Habitat Family worldwide, we are mourning and honoring the legacy of First Lady Rosalynn Carter.

Rosalynn and former U.S. President Carter first volunteered with Habitat for Humanity near their home of Plains, Georgia, in March 1984. Later that same year, the Carters joined Habitat volunteers in New York City’s Lower East Side to renovate an abandoned building in partnership with families in need of affordable housing. That trip marked Habitat for Humanity’s first Jimmy Carter Work Project (later renamed the Jimmy & Rosalynn Carter Work Project). Each year until 2020, the Carters volunteered with Habitat alongside more than 104,000 volunteers across the U.S. and in 14 countries to build, renovate and repair 4,390 Habitat homes.

Habitat for Humanity has created a Memorial page at habitat.org for anyone who would like to share their remembrances of this extraordinary humanitarian and express their sympathies.

Our Veteran critical home repair program restores dignity and provides safe and comfortable homes for those who have served.

Thanks to a Veteran repair grant from Lockheed Martin, we were able to perform much-needed help for Cynthia, a US Army Veteran, who served as a clinical specialist. Her Acworth home was in dire need of rodent removal and remediation, new insulation, drywall repairs, siding repairs, new windows, new interior cabinets, kitchen sink and countertops, as well as exterior paint.

Thanks to funding grants from Lockheed Martin, The Home Depot Foundation, Cobb EMC and the Atlanta Regional Commission, we were able to help Sam, a disabled US Navy veteran, who served on a submarine. He had to retire early due to injuries sustained in service.

Sam needed a new roof, HVAC system, and garage doors. We were also able to install a drain outside to improve flooding in his yard and around the foundation of the house. We also replaced flooring and drywall inside the house sustained from a previous flood.

This repair is a key example of what can be accomplished when many community partners come together through Habitat to assist Veterans. Sam says Habitat saved him from a “dark place in his life.”

We could not help Veterans like Cynthia and Sam without the funding from our partner organizations who are committed to those who served us. For that, and so many other blessings we are grateful. From our Habitat family to yours, we wish you a Happy Thanksgiving.

With heavy hearts, we share the news of Rosalynn Carter's passing. As a passionate advocate for Habitat's mission and a former first lady, let's commemorate her positive spirit and steadfast commitment to improving global housing conditions.

Welcome home, Samantha! We’re thrilled to announce that Samantha has just closed on her home on Britt Road in Mableton and can start moving in!

The home build was sponsored by Holy Innocents’ Episcopal School, and Kaye and Bion Jones in memory of Carleta Crews, and recently had the dedication ceremony on October 28th.

Samantha is a Certified Medical Assistant at WellStar who spends her days caring for others. Now, she can move out her family of three out of the one-bedroom apartment where they have been living and provide the strength and stability of homeownership for her daughters, Aaliyah and Marley. Congratulations Samantha on all your hard work and the joy of having your own home.

We have crossed the finish line on our final two Habitat builds of the year! Week 9 landscaping is complete on the two neighboring Catholics' 4 Habitat homes on Frasier Street in Marietta. Twenty volunteers from Publix Super Markets Charities and new sponsor PowerPlan helped the coalition members lay sod, plant bushes, and put down pine straw. The two houses will now allow City of Marietta public servants Tracey and Di’Ana to be “home” for the holidays.

Using lots donated by the City of Marietta earlier this year, the houses are the Catholics 4 Habitat coalition’s 48th and 49th Habitat homes with us! The coalition has never missed a year of building in its 31 years of existence.

Future homeowner Tracey is Sanitation Foreperson with the City of Marietta Sanitation Services Division of Public Works. She has worked for the City of Marietta for almost 20 years and was the first woman employee in the department! This past weekend, we commemorated Veterans Day - the “eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month" of 1918 that signaled the end of World War I, originally known as “Armistice Day”.

Veterans Day pays tribute to all American veterans—living or dead—but especially gives thanks to living veterans who served their country honorably during war or peacetime.

The military men and women who have served and protected the United States come from all walks of life— they are parents, children, grandparents, friends, neighbors, and coworkers, and some of them are Habitat homeowners.

In the Habitat family, we strive to honor Veterans every day through homeownership and critical repairs. Veterans Place is a Habitat neighborhood for Veteran homeowners who honorably served our country. We completed the neighborhood in 2022 and commemorated it on Veterans Day with a yellow ribbon ceremony and honorary plaque installation.

Through our Veteran Repair program, we have helped countless Veterans in our community with critical home repairs and accessibility modifications that they simply could not afford on their own. Thanks to partners like the The Home Depot Foundation , Lockheed Martin, and Cobb EMC, this program has given so many Veterans the ability to stay safely in their homes and age in place with dignity.

We hope you all had a wonderful Veterans Day weekend.

Yesterday our latest Veteran Habitat homeowner Tanisha signed her closing documents and will soon move into her new home on Adair Street in Douglasville with her son Aidan. Tanisha is a United States Army Veteran, who works for the Department of Family and Children Services, currently serving as a Program Administrator for Food Stamps and Family Medicaid. She was a mother of two sons, but in 2015, her oldest, Dominic tragically passed away in his sleep at the age of 25. She and Aidan have walked through this tragedy together and learned to appreciate the small things life brings. We are glad to have been part of this Veteran's journey to earn her new home in time for the holidays.

We have a long tradition of partnering with Publix Super Markets Charities for Habitat builds. They share the same passion for our mission of helping families and changing lives in our community. Thank you to Publix for joining us again this year and volunteering with the Catholics 4 Habitat coalition for one of the final builds of the City of Marietta Public Service Housing Program.

The Publix team has been helping to build a home on Frasier Street in Marietta for future homeowner, Tracey. Tracey is a public servant who has worked for the City of Marietta for almost 20 years and was the first woman employee of the Sanitation Services Division of Public Works. Her hard work and leadership paved the way for her current position of Sanitation Foreperson.

Thank you, Publix Super Markets Charities, for all you have done to change the life of this remarkable Marietta public servant. Soon, Tracey will be home for the holidays. We hope to see you again next year!
