Last Thursday, Tropical Storm Debby visited the Upstate, but that didn't stop Cleveland Academy's Back to School Bash! We had over 600 people come out and meet the teachers, get registered, and have an amazing time!

Doctor, doctor give me the news....

On Sunday, May 19, Tony Thomas was awarded an honorary Doctor of Humanities from Wofford College. As Wofford shared at their commencement, "Mr. Thomas' connections to Wofford developed through his work on the Northside Initiative. He has been a teacher, mentor, role model and friend to Wofford students, guiding them as they learn more about our shared and neighboring community."

Congratulations to Tony on this great honor!

One of the goals of the 2014 Northside Transformation Plan was to “create the safest community in Spartanburg.” Over the years since we began our work, both violent crime and property crime have decreased significantly in the Northside. A study by the National Institute of Health found neighborhood crime is an important contextual predictor of mental health with implications for prevention and policy.

Northside and Highland networking and learning with and from similar communities from across the county at the Purpose Built Communities conference in Birmingham, AL. Thanks to Woodlawn United for hosting us this week.

Butterfly Foundation hosted a mixer on Wednesday at the Monarch Café and Fresh Food Store and their board hosted their meeting in our space yesterday. Voyager Park is one of the brand-new parks built in the heart of the Northside community. The park contains a beautiful statue that represents our wonderful Voyagers. It also contains benches to sit and paths to walk around. It is located in between the Cleveland Academy of Leadership and Franklin Street. Happy Friday to all and make sure to get out there and enjoy the nice weather!
