Smackout pack update
Publish date
Sep 8, 2022
This is an update for the Smackout pack following the lethal removal authorization by Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) Director Kelly Susewind on Sept. 1.
On Sept. 1, Director Kelly Susewind authorized staff to lethally remove one wolf from the Smackout pack territory in response to repeated depredations of cattle on public and private grazing lands in Stevens and Pend Oreille Counties under the guidance of the state's Wolf Conservation and Management Plan and the lethal removal provisions of the department's wolf-livestock interaction protocol.
On Sept. 8, WDFW staff lethally removed a juvenile male wolf while conducting lethal removal operations. Although this wolf was in the immediate proximity of and appeared to be traveling with members of the Smackout pack, based on the location of the removal and subsequent discovery of other wolves in the area, it is not clear whether the wolf was traveling with the Smackout pack or the Dirty Shirt pack.
Based on these events, lethal removal operations have been suspended. If WDFW documents additional livestock depredation(s) attributed to the Smackout pack indicating a renewed pattern of depredation, the current lethal removal authorization may be reinitiated and extended.
WDFW documented five depredation events (five within the last 30 days) affecting three different livestock producers resulting in four dead and two injured calves since August 17, 2022 attributed to the Smackout pack. WDFW has not documented any additional wolf depredations in the Smackout pack territory since Aug. 31.

OSP Fish and Wildlife Seeking Public Assistance in Identifying Person(s) responsible for killing a Wolf -- Baker County (Photo) - 08/09/22
The Oregon State Police Fish & Wildlife Division is seeking the public’s assistance in locating the person(s) responsible for shooting and killing a wolf in the Pine Creek Wildlife Management Unit.
On August 5, 2022, Fish and Wildlife Troopers received information from ODFW that a collared wolf, OR112, may be deceased at a location just off of Forest Service RD 66, between Twin Lakes and Fish Lake. This location is approximately 7 miles north of Halfway, OR.
Fish & Wildlife Troopers and ODFW personnel responded to the area and located a deceased wolf over the embankment of the 66 RD. The wolf had injuries consistent with having been shot by a firearm. The wolf, known as OR112 was a two year old gray-collared female that was part of the Keating Pack. Troopers believe the wolf was shot and killed on the morning of August 4, 2022.
The Oregon Wildlife Coalition and conservation partners are offering to pay an $11,500 reward that leads OSP F&W Troopers to an arrest and/or citation stemming from this incident.
Anyone with information regarding this case is urged to contact OSP through the Turn in Poachers (TIP) hotline at 1-800-452-7888 or *OSP (*677), or email [email protected] Reference case number SP22201971.

Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) Director Kelly Susewind today (June 13, 2022) authorized the lethal removal of one to two wolves from the Togo pack territory in response to repeated depredations of cattle on private grazing lands in Ferry County.
The proactive and responsive non-lethal deterrents used by the two affected livestock producers (described below) in the area this grazing season have not curtailed further depredations.

Hi all:
The senate committee announced yesterday afternoon that they will be voting on Commissioners Smith, Ragen, Rowland, Lehmkuhl, Linville and Anderson tomorrow at the end of the committee meeting. That recommendation will then go to the Senate for a floor vote. So, please try to take a few minutes by tomorrow morning to email your recommendations for Smith, Ragen, Rowland and Lehmkuhl—or at least, go to these links and register a recommendation and brief comment for each one:

Melanie Rowland - https://app.leg.wa.gov/billsummary?BillNumber=9405&Year=2021&Initiative=false

AWARD AND TRIBUTE ALERT!!
*********************************
Over the years I have written hundreds of articles about wolves.
From the beginning of my adventure there was a special advocate who was behind the scenes with me here at Western Wildlife Conservation.
She was brought to tears as I began explaining to the world what was happening one day as the State began a lethal removal operation to remove the Huckleberry Pack in NE Washington on Hunters pass.
There were hundreds of sheep that were let to roam in an area not far from a rendezvous site on a property owned by the Hancock Timber Company.
I went up to the area and observed what was going on and reported back to all of you what was going on as it was happening until one fateful day when a chopper flew over my head and I heard a thud of a shot that rang out in the distance.
I later found out from a friend of mine Suzanne Asha Stone that in fact it was the breeding female of the Huckleberry Pack that was removed.
That is when this page exploded in growth to have near 10,000 followers. Eileen Sutz is the name of one of the advocates who helped me move the needle and bring the story of Washington's wolves to all of you. She was a special person who unfortunately passed away due to a stroke a little over a week ago.
We spoke often of what was happening in her neck of the woods in Wisconsin and Illinois as well thought together on what wolves mean and what we could do to change the circumstances.
She shared our work on Save Wolves Now, Wolf Watcher and many other pages and web sites as well retold the stories I wrote so people could understand the gravity of the issues surrounding our wild faces.
For February 2022 our Wildlife Advocate of the Month and the person whom we are paying tribute to is non other than Eileen Sutz. She will be on our legends List as well.
Thank you Dear Eileen!!

A young girl was doing her homework at her parents small farm near Boise Idaho and as always was doodling her favorite animal which was a Grey Wolf while thinking about the answers to write on her homework assignment.
Her father who was an avid wolf hunter and trapper was getting frustrated by the continued distraction so asked his daughter if she had a moment to talk.
She replied sure.
He asked her a snarky question about why wolves exist on the planet and why we allowed wolves to be around when all they do is kill all the deer and elk and are a scourge to our forest.
The little girl said, I have a question. Cows, Horses and Deer all eat the same thing. Grass.
Why do cows p**p in big patties, deer p**p in little pellets and horses in big clumps?
Perplexed, her father said I don't know.
She responded to her father, How can you feel qualified then to discuss wolves when obviously you don't know s**t?

This past week has seen another great thing come about in Washington State as Governor Inslee has filled all three vacant seats on the WDFW Commission!!
I am honored to be a part of the group who sent letters and urged Governor Inslee to make appointments quickly after the resignation of Fred Koontz who could not deal with the commission's politics. Who could blame him...
Now the tables are finally turned it appears as the Governor has appointed three very qualified commissioners to fill vacancies that have needed to be filled for quite some time and hopefully be a voice of reason and science for the animals sake...
The new commissioners have the following credentials.
A leading marine mammal expert, an experienced wildlife biologist, and a dedicated environmental attorney.
Please join us and our partners in welcoming the following commissioners for WDFW
Dr. John Lehmkuhl from Chelan County will fill the eastern Washington position that has been vacant for over a year. Dr. Lehmkuhl is a retired research biologist with the U.S. Forest Service, who has spent 25 years working with Washington wildlife. He has a Ph.D. in forest science and an M.S. in wildlife ecology.
Melanie Rowland from Okanogan County will fill the at-large seat vacated by Commissioner Fred Koontz in December. Ms. Rowland is a retired environmental attorney, who spent 15 years as a senior attorney for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, working on issues related to fisheries, marine mammals, and endangered species.
Dr. Tim Ragen from Skagit County will fill the seat previously held by Larry Carpenter, Dr. Ragen is the retired director of the U.S. Marine Mammal Commission. He has a Ph.D., in oceanography, and since retirement has continued his lifelong fight to conserve endangered marine species, including southern resident killer whales.

Each month Western Wildlife Conservation chooses a wildlife advocate of the month.
January, being the first month of the year names our first advocate of the month for 2022.
After being nominated by not one, but 3 other advocates I had to look a bit closer at our newest Advocate of the month and I have to say, that I am pleased to announce that Melba Coleman has been chosen as January's advocate of the month and the first advocate of the month for 2022.
Melba is a co-owner of Yellowstone Optics and stands firm in her dedication to wildlife and the lands they call home.
According to her page, her favorite quote is “If you sit and wait, nothing will continue to happen. It only takes one person caring to be a catalyst for positive change" and she apparently lives her words.
Thank you Melba for your hard work and dedication to wild faces and places.
Congrats for being awarded Advocate of the month for January 2022!!
We are all very proud of you!
These awards are not given lightly!!

Hi All!!
My apologies for not getting this and getting it out sooner.
Time is of the essence in Washington State to get your voices heard.
There are a number of bills being heard in committee today and the links provided and the explanation is below per our friends at Washington Wildlife First.
Please read and follow the links provided.
Thanks WWC
Good morning, everyone, I wanted to give you a quick update on bills this week; some bills are being heard in Committee today, so I apologize for the late notice. Below is a summary of the bills in public hearings this week that we are watching, our position, and how you can engage. We do not have any intel that the Senate bills are likely to pass, but your engagement in the process is important.
House Bill 2027 was introduced by allies in the legislature; however, we have concerns about this bill going forward. We will let everyone know if those concerns can be addressed and our position can change. Please let me know if you have any follow-up questions.
Today, 1/25 @ 1:30 pm in Senate Committee on Agriculture, Water, Natural Resources & Parks is scheduled to hear testimony on the following three bills:
SB 5721, which would put WDFW under the management of the commissioner of public lands.
ACTION: Note your position as "Con" for the legislative record. CLICK HERE
SB 5656 , which would provide that if the senate does not confirm an appointment to the Fish and Wildlife Commission within 12 months, the appointment to the commission expires and the governor must provide a new appointment.
ACTION: Note your position as "Con" for the legislative record. CLICK HERE
SB 5661, which provides that If the governor fails to fill vacancies on the Commission within 60 days, those vacancies will be filled by the chair of each of the two largest caucuses of the senate and the two largest caucuses of the house.
NO ACTION: We are neutral on this.
Tomorrow, 1/26 @ 10:00 am in House Committee on Rural Development, Agriculture & Natural Resources is scheduled to hear testimony on the following bill:
HB 2027,which would establish a joint legislative task force to consider reforms to the governance structure and mandate of WDFW.
We support the intent of this bill—a new governance structure for WDFW, including restructuring or potentially eliminating the Commission, and leadership that is “collaborative, effective, accountable, and science-based.” Its primary sponsors are Rep. Joe Fitzgibbon and Rep. Mike Chapman, who are allies to many of our groups and environmental champions.
Our concern is that this task force will suffer from the common problems of citizen work groups set up to consider wildlife issues, including that it lacks structure, organization and outcomes; that it will be stacked with people representing polarized special interest groups, rather than anyone possessing any particular expertise (in science, wildlife management, or state agency governance); and that conservationist voices will be drowned out by consumption interests (conservationists have 3 seats on this task force, while hunters, fishers, agriculture, the outdoor recreation industry and the business community will have 6).
ACTION: Note your position as "Con" for the legislative record. CLICK HERE.
Note: If you sign up for public testimony, please sign up as "other," NOT as "con" and politely convey your concerns.
OK People!!
Its time to start the process of deciding who our candidates will be for Januaries Advocate of the month!!
Please sound off below and remember that there are 12 month's in the year and to submit your choice each month!!
We are looking for someone who does not sit on any boards or are conservation leaders as many of those people will be on our quarterly Legends list!!
Thank you all very much for your continued following!!

AWARD ALERT
*****************
With every Honor to be bestowed we must honor the Worst of 2021 by an overwhelming margin.
Our Distinguished Honoree this year is a politician who has been near the bottom in education, last in science, last in common sense and last in conservation.
I would have to say it takes a lot of effort to get on this list but really it just takes a special kind of du***ss to get this award.
As his State's population is exploding he publicly tells his new constituents to leave and caters to the least productive members of society.
His hospitals are surging while he enjoys being the leader in the US with the lowest vaccinations for Covid and jeez, he's just killing us. (and most of his wildlife)
Basically, he has become the grandpumba of pricks, the worst of the worse and the dumbest of dumb. But heck, some people voted for him. maybe... And maybe really, he was just born that way.
There were unfortunately many runners up on the list that I cannot get to in this post however he was the most mentioned by advocates of Western Wildlife Conservation this past year and is deserving of this Award.
So without further ado let's Honor Idaho's Governor Brad Little!!
Thank you Brad for being who you are. (the world needs a few of you to keep the rest of us on our toes)
You can't have a best without a worst and you made the stinky list.
Congratulations!!!!

Each year, Western Wildlife Conservation recognizes the best and worst for the year prior, giving due credit where credit is deserved.
We have 2 walls behind the scenes called the wall of fame and, the wall of shame.
This Years Wall of Fame winner goes to a person who has been writing satire for a few years now and has been growing in popularity using humor to help soften the blow concerning wild faces, and places in doing so, using magical words to turn the table on many who are basically the spawn of Satan where conservation is concerned.
This years Wall of Fame award goes to a tender hearted, talented writer who writes in his column named the envirosnowflake Brief which you can check out here https://envirosnowflakebrief.com/
In each episode, you can get the undertones, and see the talent and thought the writer puts in. He follows what is going on, and vents it to the public with excitement and charm.
I would like to say a heart felt thank you to Michael Folks AKA Michael Tree Huggins for your hard work and determination to bring light to many issues that are very troubling to many in the conservation world, and helping to put a smile back on peoples faces in times that are very difficult.
This years Wall of Fame Recipient is Michael Folks. Please stop in and see his writing and tell him thank you!!
Please note that being the best of the best for the year is very difficult to do, and there are so many advocates that deserve to be honored.
Please nominate your advocate of the month in a message to Western Wildlife Conservation with an explanation why they deserve the honor for January 2022.
Thank you Mr. Folks for what you do for the advocates and wild faces and places.
God Speed Patrick Jennings!!
Thank you for all you have done to help us keep wolves alive.
