11 years ago, St. Elizabeth Girls Secondary School became the first secondary school for girls in Chepareria, West Pokot, Kenya. Since then, the rate of FGM has gone from 95% to less then 10%, and over 500 girls now attend the school. The community has been transformed, as more and more girls were able to receive an education and give back to their community. Other areas started to emulate this model, and there has been an explosion in the number of both primary and secondary schools in West Pokot region.

Tomorrow (November 25th) marks the beginning of the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence. Globally, 1 in 3 women will experience violence in her lifetime. In Kenya, often those women are children. The aim to end all forms of gender-based violence, including FGM and child marriage, by #2030. It’s not a pipedream. We can do this. Together, it is possible.
