Vote Sam and Kiana for ASWSU HS President and VP

Hey everyone! This page is for our campaigning efforts, our goals, and our vision for WSU Health Sci

03/24/2021

Hi everyone! Sam and I wanted to take some time to share some of the specific goals that we plan to accomplish in the 2021-2022 school year. Here are the goals I want to achieve!

We can optimistically look toward a return to campus for our Health Sciences students in the coming year. I am committed to ensuring that campus amenities like access to hot meals and refreshments, library access, printing services, etc. are available in the same capacity as they were prior to the pandemic. For those of you who have not been on the Spokane campus recently, the Fresh Plate cafes are currently closed and there are no meal options available on campus for faculty, staff and grad students who are still utilizing campus for their work and I hope to see a return to normal operations as we transition to more in-person learning opportunities on campus. Furthermore, we need to address student concerns about campus facilities and quality of resources, in particular HERB being in need of repairs and refurbishment.

Another vision of mine is furthering advertising and increasing student awareness of career fairs, career seminars and education for preparing for Post-Grad life for each respective discipline on our campus. There are many career paths for each of us and exploring these options to find out which one is right for each student is valuable and often overlooked resource.

Last but not least, I want to work to strengthen relationships with other WSU Health Sciences organizations on campus such as Cougs in the Community, SEB, etc. to help us build a sense of community as WSU Cougs. Bridging these relationships between the different health science disciplines on the WSU/EWU campus is especially important right now when we have had fewer opportunities to meet and collaborate due to distance learning.

Iā€™m excited to talk with everyone about these goals and my vision for the 2021-2022 school year! Thank you so much for your time and please donā€™t forget to drop in during our tabling event on Wednesday between 3-8pm! GO COUGS!

Hey everyone I hope you all are having a nice Monday so far! Kiana and I wanted to take some time to share some of the specific goals that we plan to accomplish in the 2021-2022 school year. I will first start off with some of the goals that I want to accomplish in the 2021-2022 school year!

First, I want to increase the visibility of mental health/counseling services available on campus. With some programs being primarily online this past year, I have noticed how mentally draining it is for some students, and how important it is to implement good mental health practices. I want to ensure that students know more about the counseling services available on campus, as well as other campus resources. One of my goals is to constantly market these counseling services (and the counselors behind these services) on campus through ASWSUHS social media so that students are more likely to utilize these resources.

Secondly, I also want to start a monthly mental health survey that program senators can distribute to students. Students can take these mental health surveys on a monthly basis which ensures real-time feedback about pertinent issues in their respective programs. These surveys would help gauge student mental health, help pinpoint the cause of poor mental health outcomes (if applicable), and give ASWSUHS officers a good baseline to work off of. As President, I want to address any pertinent issues as soon as possible, and I believe that the implementation of monthly mental health surveys will help with that.

Thirdly, I want to help expand resources for the Yakima campus and strengthen the relationship between the Yakima campus and the Spokane campus. One of the main concerns that Iā€™ve heard from some Yakima students is the amount of resources that they have in comparison to the Spokane campus. I want to work very closely with the Yakima Relations executive officer in 2021-2022 to understand what can be done to better the student experience in Yakima.

Lastly, I want to strengthen relationships with schools around the WSU Health Sciences campuses including Gonzaga, EWU, Whitworth University, PNWU (Yakima) and more. From these relationships I want to work together to promote a sense of community in Spokane and Yakima, and work together to create an environment that helps benefit all community members.

Other than that, I would like to thank all of you for your time, and I hope this gives you some insight into some of the goals that I have for the 2021-2022 school year. I look forward to sharing more about these goals at our tabling event on Wednesday! I hope you all have a wonderful rest of your Monday and as always, Go Cougs!

Hey Cougs, my name is Kiana Lee and I am a second year pharmacy student. I am pleased to announce that I am running for your next ASWSU HS Vice president alongside Sam! I love being involved on our campus and many of my experiences here at WSU have shaped my professional goals of benefitting the students at large.

Get to know me - I was born and raised in Honolulu, HI and completed my undergraduate education at the University of Hawaii. I loved volunteering to help my community back home and Iā€™m committed to making healthcare and healthcare careers more accessible to underprivileged and underrepresented communities. My hobbies include sewing and playing video games and I own pretty much every type of Nintendo console!

My leadership experiences in different professional organizations have provided me with a diverse skill set to draw on in the position of Vice President. I am currently a co-chair for the operation Power to End Stroke in the Student National Pharmaceutical Association (SNPhA) and Vice Regent of WSUā€™s chapter of Kappa Psi Pharmaceutical Fraternity, Inc. Prior to starting pharmacy school, I worked as a technician in a research lab and essentially managed a lab of up to 11 research personnel. I have cultivated the ability to coordinate team efforts, improved my communication skills, and refined my goals of supporting the success of our Health Sciences programs. I am a team player who is dedicated to listening and advocating on behalf of our students here in Spokane, so please donā€™t be shy about reaching out and connecting with me!

Hello everyone! My name is Samuel Nahulu, I am a second year pharmacy student, and I am excited to be running as your next ASWSUHS President/VP candidate alongside Kiana Lee! I currently serve as the ASWSUHS Chief of Staff and work closely with the current executive team. I am also involved in other leadership roles on campus such as IPhO President-Elect, Kappa Psi Sergeant-at-Arms, and WSU CPPS Student Ambassador. My experiences in these leadership roles have helped me grow to be an effective communicator, team player, and leader that would make me a reliable candidate to serve as your next ASWSUHS President. I want to serve you and your needs, and I want to ensure that every student's voice is heard. As President, I want to work more closely with health sciences administration and work towards achieving better outcomes for the student body. I look forward to the rest of this campaign process and I canā€™t wait to share more about what Kiana and I plan to accomplish!

Aside from this, a bit more about me! I grew up in the small town of Wahiawa, Hawaii not too far from the North Shore of Oahu. Growing up in Hawaii, I learned to love body surfing, hiking, and playing music with friends and family. Most of all, I learned to love giving back to my community, and working on Native Hawaiian cultural projects. I decided that I would want to give back in a way that would benefit the community as a career option, and I felt that pursuing a position in the field of pharmacy was the best way for me to achieve this. I went to Whitworth University where I got my Bachelors of Science in Health Sciences and a Minor in Chemistry. When I am not studying for exams or working, I enjoy playing video games (Zelda: BOTW is the best by the way), playing guitar, and of course, sleeping!
