Today, the liberty movement has suffered a tremendous loss with the news that David Boaz passed away this morning, succumbing to a years-long battle with cancer.

David served for over 40 years at the Cato Institute. During that time, he was pivotal in growing Cato into the world's most respected and impactful libertarian think tank. David tirelessly fought for the rights of all people to be free and did it eloquently, skillfully, and passionately. His absence weighs heavy and will be felt for a long time.

In addition to his illustrious career, his impactful books Libertarianism: A Primer and the Libertarian Mind: A Manifest for Freedom, and his thousands of articles, public speeches, and media appearances, David also greatly impacted Students For Liberty’s founding and our growth. As one of our founding advisory board members, his influence and support have been instrumental from the beginning.

David's contributions to SFL are numerous and invaluable. He was the headline speaker at our very first conference since 2008, the conference at which Students For Liberty was born. We were also incredibly moved when he told us he wanted his, most likely, last public appearance to be at LibertyCon 2024, SFL’s flagship event. His support extended beyond words; for years, he facilitated SFL's growth by helping us secure office space at the Cato Institute, providing us with a critical foundation during our formative years. His tireless advice has helped us avoid important pitfalls of other student groups before us and put us on the right track.

David’s commitment to liberty and his dedication to mentoring young libertarians have been unwavering. Rarely a few weeks went by without David reaching out, sharing ideas, or pointing out ways for us to make an even bigger impact.

We will try our best to carry on his legacy and build thousands of leaders, some of whom certainly have the potential to step into the chasm that David Boaz left behind.

His legacy is one of unwavering commitment to liberty and a relentless pursuit of a freer, more just world. As he said in his last LibertyCon speech, "Now it’s your turn." This mandate resonates, urging us to continue the fight for liberty with renewed conviction.

David Boaz, thank you for all you’ve done to create a freer future for us all. I, and the thousands of students across the world that you inspired, will deeply miss you!

H.G. Wells and G.K. Chesterton could not have disagreed more.

Wells made his name as a socialist, atheist, and science fiction writer. Chesterton, on the other hand, was a conservative intellectual, religious (first as an Anglican, later as a Catholic), and a famous apologist.

Both engaged in public debates, and articles were published in newspapers. The provocations were mutual, as was their friendship.

On one occasion, Wells even stated, "If I ever enter Paradise, assuming there is one, it will be by the intervention of Gilbert Chesterton."

Chesterton, in turn, stated that Wells was “the only one among the many brilliant contemporaries who never stopped growing.”

Senate Bill 3589

(While elements of this bill are already law here in WA, please note that this bill specifically targets Washingtonians by making it a crime for us to travel to another state to train! Please read this email and take action! )

You and I are truly living in dangerous times.

Even while Joe Biden and the Radical Left work to ban the sale of AR-15s, they know that they have a problem since there are already an estimated 20-25 million of them in circulation.

That’s why Biden’s allies just filed S. 3589, legislation that would make it a FELONY CRIME to train with an AR-15 or similar firearm in groups of three or more!

This is not a joke.

And it gets much worse.

If you’re pressed for time, please make sure that you sign your petition against S. 3589, so Senators Murray and Cantwell and your Congressman) know that you demand they oppose this bill!

The arrogance of this bill is hard to overstate.

The title of the bill is “Preventing Private Paramilitary Activity Act of 2024.” To Biden and our want-to-be overlords in D.C., anyone who trains with an AR-15 with more than two of their friends is engaged in paramilitary activity!

Biden wants to prevent that or arrest us for this ‘crime.’

Specifically, S. 3589 would:

Criminalize groups of 3 of more people training with an AR-15 or any other firearm that holds over 10 rounds of ammo.

Criminalize going out of state to receive fi****ms training, something that countless gun owners do every year.

Criminalize training with magazines that hold over 10 rounds of ammunition, which are all modern rifles and handguns.

Allow Merrick Garland to sue you in civil court in advance, meaning that whatever happens you’ll wind up broke.
FIGHT BACK AGAINST S. 3589!
This bill makes clear what we’ve all known for a long time: Joe Biden considers proud gun owners like you and me to be enemies, enemies that he needs to crush using the power of the state!

S. 3589 was just filed.

The co-sponsor push is just beginning in the Senate.

We’re told that a House companion bill may be filed very soon.

While I have no doubt that Senators Murray and Cantwell would happily vote for this bill, it’s an election year, and Senate Democrats are worried backing this may cost them in November.

We need to confirm that fear, by pouring on the pressure right now! If Senate Democrats understand that this bill may cost them their majority, this bill will never advance to the floor!

Defend the guard legislation is happening in many states. The idea of this legislation is to prevent National Guard personnel from being treated as active duty US Military personnel that The Pentagon can call up and send overseas on a whim.

The National Guard was designed to be troops on US soil to guard US soil. Members are members of their State's Guard and should not be controlled on a National level unless a State Legislature or Governor chooses to send troops to help in US Imperialism over seas. We should be able to choose if our troops stay home to protect us VS The Pentagon raiding the various States for personnel.

Four long years to get back and get it through a senate hearing and now it is on the floor for debate!!!
