A lonely state road. A woman alone. A flat tire.

Here comes Rocky. He just finished a parade. He's got two more hours until he's home. He's looking forward to his wife's barbecue dinner and a relaxing beverage. He wants his own dogs around him...not mine.

But he stops nonetheless. And changes the flat.

Why?

Because that's who he is.

And I'm his campaign manager because of who he is.

Dear Fellow Democrats,

The Republicans have leveraged the Supreme Court, the Heritage Foundation, corporations, misinformation, gerrymandering, and the top 1% to enact drastic changes to our country without public approval. It's time for us to take a stand.

Corporations are not people. The Supreme Court should not legislate. County Commissioners must be held accountable for unethical behavior. Democracy is worth fighting for. Being unhoused should not be a crime. Water should be safe for everyone. The circumstances of your birth should not dictate your value in society. "States' rights" has always been a code for stripping away civil rights.

What they forget is that we are the sovereigns of this nation. We hold the power to remove those who do not align with our belief that “a government of the people, by the people, for the people” is our birthright. We believe that government exists to achieve, as a community, state, and nation, what we cannot achieve as individuals; and to fight for equity for all.

We are fortunate to live in Washington State, where we can make a difference. But we must be involved, act, speak up, and fight back. Those who show up get to have a say in every facet of life, including politics. If you don’t like something, show up and change it. We are stronger together than they are. We have the ability to make them regret going this far.

If we unite, we can accomplish anything. What are you waiting for? Come November, will you regret that you could have done more?

Let's stand together and make our voices heard.

Sprague Avenue Construction to Begin in Spokane Valley

Spokane Valley, WA – Construction of the Sprague Avenue Stormwater and Multi-Modal Improvement Project is anticipated to begin June 10. The project is located on westbound Sprague Avenue between N. University Road and N. Herald Road in Spokane Valley.

The project will increase public safety, protect drinking water and provide options and safety for how people choose to travel, whether by car, bus, bike or foot, including connecting the new Balfour Park and Spokane Valley Library with City Hall and the Appleway Trail. Project elements include:

• Stormwater facilities within the existing right-of-way
• Traffic signal improvements
• Pedestrian mid-block signalized crosswalk
• High-performance transit bus stop
• Improved delineated bike lane
• Reduce three blocks of Sprague Avenue from five lanes to three, extending the existing three lanes east of N. University Road west a couple of blocks to N. Herald Road.

Most construction activities will take place Monday through Friday between 7 a.m. and 6 p.m., with minimal night and weekend work. The project is expected to be completed in the fall, depending on factors such as favorable weather, construction impacts, or other unforeseen circumstances.

During construction, Sprague Avenue will be reduced to two lanes, and travelers can expect reduced speeds and traffic delays. Side streets and intersections will generally remain open throughout construction. Business access will remain open, and the City encourages community members to continue to support local businesses during construction. Signage will be in place to help direct travel through the construction zone and detours when needed.

The project is funded by a combination of state and federal grants, revenue from the Spokane Transit Authority to fund the bus stop and crosswalk, and city funds dedicated to stormwater and pavement preservation.

Learn more about the project at www.SpokaneValleyWA.gov/Sprague and the other City of Spokane 2024 construction projects at www.SpokaneValleyWA.gov/Construction.

This week for AAPI Month we are highlighting the Delano Grape Strike.

On September 8, 1965, 2,000 Filipino American farm workers, led by Larry Itliong of the Agricultural Workers Organizing Committee (AWOC), took a stand for better working conditions by refusing to pick grapes in California. Two weeks later, Cesar Chavez and Dolores Huerta’s National Farm Workers Association (NFWA) joined forces with AWOC, creating the United Farm Workers (UFW).

After five years of striking and an international boycott, the Delano Grape Strikers achieved victory in 1970 with new contracts. Larry Itliong’s legacy of activism, including his resignation from UFW in 1971 to support aging Filipino American workers and his role in the 1972 Democratic National Convention, highlights the crucial yet often overlooked contributions of Filipino Americans in the farm labor movement.

Al French and the “forever chemicals” cover-up 01/05/2024

If anyone had any doubts about the impact of local government on people’s daily lives, this article from Rhubarb Skies is an eye-opener.

H/t to Rep. Marcus Riccelli for leading the effort to make the Spokane County Board of Commissioners more responsive and representative, changing state law to provide a commission with five members elected by their own constituents. Thanks to Chris Jordan and Commissioner Amber Waldref for making transparency a priority. Godspeed to new Four Lakes Water Commissioner-elect McCray as he prepares to take office.
