We do a lot of this stuff in class....just sayin'.....

04/22/2016

Last night's class was particularly energizing. Since Throat Punch Thursday is the night we train Panantukan we began with some rounds of advanced footwork patterns and followed that with a few rounds of the 1-3 Series and some Kunsi Lock flows. Then we thought to ourselves, how can we make these drills more Diabolical? That's when we added some locking concepts from Farang Musul and Shorinji Kempo and took all of the face punches and replaced them with spear hands, panther fists, and phoenix eye strikes to the throat! Creativity!

03/04/2016

Class was awesome this evening. We warmed up with mitt drills and stretching, then did some kicking drills, followed with hubud variations into joint locking and Silat entries...It was a Throat Punch Thursday to be remembered!

03/02/2016

Class was very enjoyable last night. One of our students, an advanced Wing Chun practitioner, shared some profound insights into the art as we practiced the 3rd form, Biu Gee. I can already feel my Wing Chun skills improving! Stay Diabolical!

Throat Punch Thursday: We worked on some Hubud Lubud drills, lock flows, breakfalls, and ground positions and escapes. The students are a bit new to the physical rigors of grappling....especially when paired with bigger partners, but they did well. I reminded them that if they can do the escapes on bigger people using solid technique, people their own size will be much easier to handle. I am very blessed with hardworking and talented students.

I just finished watching my new NSI Water and Steel Seminar DVD's. As an instructor, I've seen many different takes on JKD and Filipino martial arts. Here are some of the things I appreciate about the Worden Defense System and the way the Datu Kelly Worden teaches it.

Let's start with the DVDs. The DVD's are great. There is a ton of useful information packed into them and they make you feel like you are right there at the seminars. Topics covered range from devastating striking sets and lock flows, to combative ground fighting and utilizing specialized training equipment such as 'The Silent Fighter,' to Foot Trapping and practical applications with weapons such as stick, knife, and Datu Worden's own “Travel Wrench.” There are many concepts covered in a short time, so it is advisable to make good use of the pause button and to take good notes. As a gesture of generosity and good will, Datu also sent a bonus DVD which among other martial treasures contained an in depth section on his staff form. As things are, the staff has become known as the 'Red Headed Step Child' of the Filipino martial arts arsenal....under utilized and all but forgotten. Well, the staff just so happens to be one of Worden's specialties. When most people think of the staff in a martial arts setting, they usually picture some 8 year old spinning a tournament grade toothpick staff around their body in blindingly fast and elaborate patterns that (while they look awesome) have little to do with actual combat. Not so for the NSI staff form. Though the form is intricate enough to hold one's interest when seeing it performed without an opponent, it is filled to the brim with brutal combat applications of all kinds including toe-shattering strikes and subtly hidden disarms. Datu Worden and his instructors explain all of this in depth in the DVD. When I saw the staff form, I thought to myself, “Finally some staff techniques I can fight with!”

In a world of information overload, Worden is careful to teach martial arts in a conceptual manner in order to allow the student to find his own strengths. In some systems, you get the feeling that the main goal is the accumulation of drills and techniques (and rank certificates....) and it leaves you wondering if you are going to be able to remember how to use your training when it's needed. The Worden System is quite comprehensive and diverse, but the real beauty of it is in it's simplicity. Rather than directing his disciples to become collectors of techniques, Datu Worden teaches them how to plumb the depths of the basics and how to use conceptual knowledge to improvise and create their own custom variations....which is usually what must be done against an uncooperative opponent anyway....In my experience people rarely ever move or react in the way I expect them to. The beauty of the Worden Defense System is that training in it actually prepares you for this reality. You learn some solid basics and then learn how to apply the same movements in many different ways.

Finally, I feel that the best quality about Datu Worden is his teaching style. He is brutally honest about what aspects of training are important and about those that are not. This approach is perfect for the times we live in. Today's martial arts student is no longer content with the games that instructors play in order to milk more money out of their students. Many martial artists are starting to wake up to the fact that the ability to memorize thousands of techniques and drills isn't synonymous with the ability to apply one's art under pressure. More and more, people want real martial arts....a real value for their time, effort and money. By unabashedly sharing his knowledge of martial arts, Kelly Worden is a liberator, a light bringer who dispels foolishness with unconventional truth, a bold innovator, an enlightened reformer, and a friend of those stout-hearted souls who refuse to follow the herd.

I recently received some great DVD resources from Natural Spirit International! I'll post reviews soon. If you haven't heard about Datu Kelly Worden and his unique and effective approach to Martial Arts, you may want to check out his page. I joined his organization just over a year ago and was warmly welcomed into the most awesome brotherhood of like-minded JKD and FMA practitioners. I went to visit Datu Worden's class twice last year and it was an unforgettable experience. He moved with power, explosiveness, and grace and his techniques were very natural, logical and effective. Not only that, Datu's assistant instructors were at a very high skill level and were great teachers themselves. Check 'em out...

Training Insight of the Week: High reps with low to moderate weight is a great way to keep strength training when you have injuries or chronic pain. This approach is used with great success by physical therapists, coaches, and high level athletes. High repetition workouts tend to foster the rebuilding of damaged connective tissues and are a powerful and effective way for the body to recover and rebuild a sense of trust, so that eventually you will be able to work harder in the future. Happy Training!

I don't feel the pain of my arthritis when I am practicing Yoga or Chi Kung. Maybe I should practice Yoga and Chi Kung 24 hours a day...whoah, that was deep dude...

12/03/2014

Also, I've taken to practicing some Yoga...There are some good classes at the YMCA and I've tried a couple of them. Sometimes I get a little sore and some of the stretches do irritate my arthritis a little, but I have a feeling that if I can stick with it, the healing benefits will be amazing. I'll keep y'all posted on any progress. Namaste.

12/03/2014

Great class last night! We practiced some Jun Fan Kickboxing drills, Si Lum Tao with combat application, and the Mantis Drill. Then on the FMA side, we practiced some triangle footwork, first five angles with single baston, and ended with roof block and inside sweep. Tons of fun!

Have you ever taken a look at the bigger picture and realized that life itself is a conflict, a fight, an ongoing competition, a war? In order to succeed in combat one must attain certain goals, to strike the opponent, to take him down, to acquire a superior position, etc. While attacking or creating openings, one must also be aware of what the opponent is trying to do against him and be ready to deal with any attacks or obstacles and turn them into advantages. This war doesn't end in the Dojo. It extends out into everyday life as we all strive to meet our goals and to obtain the life we want. As we work to get things done, we must also deal with the circumstances that arise and utilize our creative and intellectual powers to turn obstacles into opportunities.
