Discreet trial training or DTT is when a client sits down at the table and has them complete program questions. While this can have a place, especially when trying to teach early learning skills, doing only this is boring and can be adverse. Natural environment teaching or NET uses playing or daily activities to create learning opportunities and is considered play-based learning. Not only does it keep the learner engaged, it also helps them generalize the skills so that they will use them in their everyday lives.

My favorite memories are… “when I got the nickname Tepen from a kiddo and it stuck with EVERYONE. As well as watching one of my main clients learn how to sit in a chair independently for the first time.”

Community is essential to wellbeing. And while you can find community anywhere, being around other caregivers of people with special needs is ✨magical✨because they 👏get 👏 it👏. I encourage you to make the effort to find those people whether it is online, through the various therapies you attend, or at local gatherings like Autism awareness walks. You aren't in this alone and having special needs community can help you feel like it.

Time to study up! There is so much to learn when working with a new client from allergies to preferences to teaching targets. And learning about the person never stops, no matter how much time you have spent with them.

Focused Behavior Solutions, LLC has been providing clinic-based and in-home behavior analytic services to clients in and around Lincoln, NE since 2020. We operate a 5,200 square foot clinic with play encouraged, and group-based classrooms, fostering a fun and collaborative environment where staff and clients can learn and grow. We are currently looking for a passionate and dedicated Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) to join our enthusiastic team of professionals.

Natural Environment Teaching

Responsibilities:

Conduct skill acquisition and behavioral assessments (ABLLS, AFLS, VBMAPP, Vineland, PEAK, functional assessments, etc.)
Develop and implement skill acquisition and behavior modification plans across various settings
Train caregivers on treatment protocols and ABA principles
Collect and analyze data to monitor and modify treatment plans
Complete program documentation and adhere to data collection requirements
Collaborate with other professionals involved in the client's treatment plan
Evaluate and report client progress towards treatment goals
Develop and oversee transition or discontinuation plans upon client discharge
Supervise and train Registered Behavior Technicians (RBTs) according to BACB guidelines
Adhere to high professional and ethical standards for conduct and confidentiality

Qualifications:

Current, active certification as a BCBA/LBA granted by the Behavior Analysis Certification Board (BACB)
Compliance with BACB standards for supervising RBTs
Ability to pass state and national criminal background checks
Reliable transportation and valid driver's license
Willingness to supervise in-home/community clients
Ability to lift 50 pounds
Strong team player

You don't need me to tell you that fireworks are bright, loud, and rumble the surrounding area. For people who are hyper-attuned to sensory input, this can be too much. GIVE YOURSELF AND OTHERS PERMISSION NOT TO GO. However, if you do want to try it out, we do have a few ideas for you.

Communication breakdowns occur frequently among people who are fluent speakers in the same language. Add any obstacles to this and miscommunication is bound to happen. When it does, we try to support our learners by providing visuals, restate the request, offer options, and give them space to walk to what they want. The goal is to honor the intent of the request, even if the learner originally asked for something different. It can be frustrating when you are not understood but when everyone works together with patience the miscommunication can resolve.

Sheriece is currently going to school for her bachelors in Psychology with the eventual goal of becoming a behavior analyst. It makes us so proud when our behavior techs love working with clients so much that they want to further their career in ABA.

One of the great things about being in a clinic setting is that behavior techs can support each other in giving the clients the best treatment possible. Sometimes we ask each other to help us out, like, ask my friend her name so she can practice. Or this client is working on labeling emotions - look surprised! This gives the client plenty of opportunities to practice skills with different people in different situations.

When using reinforcement to motivate a learner, one must be careful not to slip into bribery territory. Reinforcement is given as a reward after the learner DOES something. Bribery is given to get them to STOP doing something. Bribery makes whatever activity you wanted the person to stop doing more likely to occur again. The key difference between reinforcement and bribery is for what the reward is given.

Pairing is building trust and a bond inside the therapeutic relationship between a provider and client. By building up rapport, sessions go smoother and learning occurs in a more natural teaching environment. Pairing is never a waste of time as it makes the learner more invested in work throughout session.

Using emotion zones, we teach clients to observe how their bodies feel in the moment and identify the emotion that may go with that. Then, actions correspond to each zone. For example, taking a break is a good idea when you are in the blue or red zones, while playing with a friend makes more sense in the blue or green zones. By visualizing where you are on the emotional spectrum, you can then come up with a strategy that will be help you get back to feeling positive. Emotions are something we experience and then they pass: we are not our emotions.
