Reflecting on an unforgettable day with the SCS Waterfront Environmental Committee! 🌊✨

Led by Erin, our I-94 Ramps Only Clean-Up event was a resounding success with 67 passionate volunteers—including 47 recruits, 11 officers, and 9 dedicated volunteers. 🫡

Together, we collected an inspiring 45 bags of trash, showing incredible community spirit and teamwork.

The recruits, engaging in community service projects before their training with the Michigan National Guard, exemplified dedication to both environment and nation.

Huge thanks to our outstanding team leaders Mark, Sharon, Cori, Councilman Vitale, Rick, Jay, Barbara, and Julia, as well as Heidi and Sarah for their invaluable support behind the scenes.

Here’s to many more impactful events ahead! 🌎💙

DM us to find out how you can be a part of this initiative of SCS Clean Ups!!

Cottrell Drain Water Sampling 🌎🌊

Yesterday morning we did water sampling at the Cottrell Drain in SCS - we invited Julie Arnone and her sons, Jaxson and Jameson, as well as Sharon’s daughter and granddaughter. They were such a big help!! 💙

We did collect a few Mayflies (fishflies), a tadpole, a small fish, a few snails, and various other bugs - we were only to collect for a 2 hour period. 🐌🐸🐛🪲

Of course, Jim was our leader - he has done this testing for quite a few years!!

We also did a saline test and answered the questions from the Clinton River Watershed “Adopt a Stream” program!

Always a fun time in our waters 🙌🏼

We love our lake and especially everyone who cares for and enjoys it!🌊🎣🐟

Jefferson Masonic Lodge #553 F&AM presented a $900 check to St. Clair Shores Parks and Recreation this morning at Blossom Heath Pier. Clinton Rice, junior deacon at the Lodge, says the purpose for the donation is to “purchase fishing poles and tackle for the kids of the city so they can experience the beautiful lake we have accessible to us.”

According to St. Clair Shores Parks and Recreation Event Director Henry Bowman, the fishing equipment will be ordered quickly and will be available within the next month or so for children to borrow while at the parks. The poles and tackle will be stored at the guard shacks at all the city’s lakefront parks — Blossom Heath, Lac Sainte Clair and Veterans Memorial.

“I’m just so excited that we’re going to set up this lending library where St. Clair Shores kids can go fishing,” says Bowman, who grew up in the city and has fond childhood memories of fishing in Lake St. Clair. The donation from the Lodge is extra special for Bowman, as his father was a member for many years.

For any questions regarding borrowing fishing equipment at the parks, call the SCS Parks and Recreation Dept. at (586) 445-5353.

Safety protection key to viewing solar eclipse 03/30/2024

☀️👀Eye protection is especially required in Michigan because the sun will not be fully eclipsed.🫣

Safety protection key to viewing solar eclipse METRO DETROIT — A near total solar eclipse doesn’t occur often, but when it does happen there are safety precautions people must take to prevent eye damage and behold its true beauty.

Happy Spring! I know that my spirit was a little lighter on the day I noticed that green shoots had popped up in small clusters in my front flower beds. It always seems that they come out of nowhere — one day it’s just soil, then — p**f — a good 1 to 2 inches of hope is reaching toward the sun.

Our upcoming April/May issue goes off to the printer today. Within its pages, you’ll find a lot of people and places full of hope, particularly gardeners and those protecting the planet at the local level — Yardeners of St. Clair Shores, St. Clair Shores Community Garden, St. Clair Shores Waterfront Environmental Committee and a local couple who picks up bagfuls of trash on their daily walks.

I always love hearing people's stories, how so many are changing the world for the better — it always starts right in their own communities. Now that we are wrapping up the spring issue, I'm already hard at work on the June/July issue, which has a theme of Lake St. Clair & vacations/staycations. Reach out if you have a good story to tell about how you like to spend your summers, whether it's right here at home or at your favorite Michigan getaway: [email protected]

Thanks for your support.

Waterfront Environmental Committee prepares for fall planting in St. Clair Shores 09/27/2023

🌱 Weeding out invasive vegetation🌱

"A bioswale is a landscape feature filled with native plants that channels stormwater runoff while removing debris and pollution. Often, as is the case at Kyte Monroe, bioswales are located next to non-porous surfaces such as a cement parking lot that will not absorb stormwater."

Waterfront Environmental Committee prepares for fall planting in St. Clair Shores Volunteers from the St. Clair Shores Environmental Committee spent two hours weeding and cleaning the Kyte Monroe bioswale on Saturday morning.

💦♻️Rain Barrel Benefits♻️💦
Key benefits of rain barrel implementation at your home:
1️⃣ Reduce roof rainwater runoff that would otherwise become stormwater runoff, filled with pollutants (e.g., soil, lawn fertilizer, pesticides, animal waste, etc.)
2️⃣ Lessen storm impact on flow rates to local drainage infrastructure
3️⃣ Minimize downspouts erosion that potentially poses a risk to house foundations
4️⃣ Save drinking water resources and expenses
5️⃣ Provide an excellent plant water source as it does not contain the chemicals or fluoride found in tap/city water
Visit www.scswec.org or City Hall to inquire about a rain barrel purchase for your home (available to St. Clair Shores residents & non-residents).
Proceeds support the St. Clair Shores Waterfront Environmental Committee projects and scholarship programs.
