We frequently get questions about the various historic designations that exist — people are often confused about the designation their property has and what it does and does not signify. The National Trust for Historic Preservation put together this useful article on various designations and dispels some of the myths commonly associated with being designated "historic."

Jack Snelling hit two milestones in May. Today, for , volunteers gathered to lend a hand in repainting the historic Storys Creek Schoolhouse at Alley Spring near Eminence, Missouri. This volunteer opportunity was made possible through a partnership between our friends at the Ozark Riverways Foundation and the Ozark National Scenic Riverways. The ONSR became our nation’s first federally protected Riverways in 1964, and today the park sees hundreds of thousands of visitors per year!

Volunteers spent the morning painting the historic schoolhouse, which was donated and relocated to the park in 1971. The simple building is a well-preserved gem, showcasing what a typical one-room schoolhouse in the Ozarks looked like. Many notable students attended class in this school, including the legendary astronaut Tom Akers! Complete with the original desks inside, this connection to our past will be preserved for generations to come. This event was an opportunity to celebrate National Public Lands Day, an annual day of reflection to honor the many beautiful National and State parks and forests in the United States.

Photos: A look back at the former Mullanphy Emigrant Home building over 150 years 09/15/2023

Sad news in St. Louis today after a fire last night destroyed what remained of the Mullanphy Emigrant home in North St. Louis. Missouri Preservation originally listed the property as a Place in Peril in 2006 after storms caused considerable damage to the already decaying landmark. The Mullanphy Emigrant home was built in 1867 with money willed to the City of St. Louis by Irish-born, self-made millionaire Bryan Mullanphy. From his 1849 will: "I leave to the City of St. Louis... and constitute a fund to furnish relief to all poor emigrants and travelers coming to St. Louis..."

The Mullanphy Emigrant Home is sadly one of many historic buildings lost to fire in North St. Louis in recent years. Nearby St. Liborius Parish (Sk8 Liborius) burnt in June 2023 and the Clemens House fell to arson in 2017.

Meet Dick Greminger, owner of Rivertown Window Co. in Ste. Genevieve and long-time supporter of Missouri Preservation. When he isn’t busy providing windows for historic buildings across the Midwest, Dick can be found at Sirros his restaurant that adjoins the historic Orris Theater where he hosts a popular summer concert series. Dick has worn many hats during his lifetime in Ste. Genevieve. He’s been a rehabber, concert promoter, restaurateur, alderman, mayor and everyone’s favorite window guy. In addition to running his businesses Dick continues to be active in the Community Foundation of the Ozarks. We appreciate your dedication to preservation!
