Professor Afonso Seixas-Nunes sponsored a tour of Bernabéu, the home of Real Madrid for the 2023 Summer Law Program in Madrid students. Prof. Seixas-Nunes is teaching "Cybertechnology and International Law" in the Summer Law Program this summer.

The group toured the Bernabéu museum, which currently houses the club's legendary haul of silverware. The museum displays Real Madrid's spoils from conquests in the Spanish first division, Copa del Rey, and European competitions like the Champion's League. After the tour, Father Afonso and a friend--a local madrileño and supporting member of Real Madrid--took the students to a local restaurant for dinner.

A week and half later, a few of the students returned to the Bernabéu to watch the last home game of Real Madrid's season. They were able to witness the last appearance and goal of legendary striker Karim Benzema's 14-year career at Real Madrid.

The Projection Room 06/26/2023

The world is focused on events in Russia. CICL's Dr. Monica Eppinger made some suggestions in 2015 that sound prescient today.
-- After the invasion of Crimea and the war in southeastern Ukraine started in 2014, Western analysts reverted to thinking in terms of geopolitics and Kremlinology. To try to understand what's going on, geopolitics looks to the capitals of the "great powers" and concentrates on their "Great Games" and grand schemes.
-- Taking a lesson from history, in 2015, Dr. Eppinger urged instead that we should be looking to the margins, particularly to Russia's southwestern border with Ukraine and the territories of southeastern Ukraine where fighting was going on. Our goal should be to see what is motivating people there and to understand what they think "Russia" was, is, or should be.
-- According to Dr. Eppinger, history shows that ideas and actions from that "periphery" often profoundly shape bigger movements at the "center." The people at the "periphery" project their ideas of what "Russia" is back on to the center; the aspirations of the hinterlands form a critique or set of goals for what the capital should be doing. Writing in 2015, she said Moscow ignores them at its own peril.

And here we are in 2023: fighters from the battlefields of southeastern Ukraine are now marching from southwestern Russia towards Moscow to press for their vision of what "Russia" is or should be. However these events turn out, the ideas and motivations of people from that periphery will shape movements in the center and beyond.
For more information, follow the following link to Prof. Eppinger's article:

The Projection Room A virulent nationalism is currently being injected along Russia's newly blurred southwestern border with Eastern Ukraine. As tempting as it my be to slip back into Cold War rhetorics, Monica Eppinger warns us that the old framework and distant gaze of geopolitics are prone to missing much. This essa...

From “limited sovereignty” to decolonization in Ukraine | HAU: Journal of Ethnographic Theory: Vol 12, No 3 05/05/2023

Want a new angle to understand the war in Ukraine and what lies behind it? Professor Monica Eppinger has a new article in which she takes a comparative law approach to look at sovereignty from Russian and Ukrainian perspectives. https://www.journals.uchicago.edu/doi/full/10.1086/724016?fbclid=IwAR3GyqJXiORLqNYMgUrNvt0cJsIAlyZEd4aiiE1yrofhHcPh83eEW9Fmbns

From “limited sovereignty” to decolonization in Ukraine | HAU: Journal of Ethnographic Theory: Vol 12, No 3 This article takes up the loaded topic of “Russia in the world of Ukraine.” Now an object of official Russia’s aggressive attention, contemporary Ukraine presents a pressing case for reconsidering colonialism which, I propose, requires reconceptualizing sovereignty. I compare descriptions of s...
