As Pride month is coming down to a close it is important to remember that Pride is not just a month it is about people. It is about a group of marginalized people that have risen up so that they can live their truth. If you would like to learn more about LGBTQIA+ history and the various organizations here’s what we’ve been watching this month.

Now is a great time to help support the LGBTQIA+ community by purchasing from LGBTQIA+ run businesses, donating to LGBTQIA+ organizations or by purchasing items from companies that are putting proceeds towards certain LGBTQIA+ based organizations. Before making a purchase to a company that claims to donate or support the community, check to make sure that the company does not participate in Rainbow capitalism. This is where companies will release Pride collections only to get money from their consumers instead of actively trying to make a change. Here is a list of companies that are donating to LGBTQIA+ organizations.

Gc2b which is a trans owned company that focuses on gender reaffirming binders with a comprehensive size guide. They currently have a new line for Pride 2021 that includes various apparel.

Converse Pride 2021 collection: A portion of the proceeds from this collection will be going to organizations such as It Gets Better Project, Ali Forney Center, BAGLY and OUT MetroWest

This week, we’ve focused on the works of these four influential LGBTQ+ activists and icons.
-Alok Vaid-Menon: Poet and performing artist who received a Live Works Performing Arts Grant in 2017 and released a book of poetry called "Femme in Public." They are also featured in HBO's documentary "The Trans List."
-Pauline Park: Co-founder of Queens Pride House and the New York Association for Gender Rights Advocacy. She also negotiated the inclusion of gender identity and expression in the Dignity for all Students Act in 2010.
-Kelly Rakowski: Creator of le***an culture instagram account , posting pictures of le***an culture from the 1800s to early 2000s, and Personals, a text-only q***r dating platform.
-Laverne Cox: First openly transgender person to receive an Emmy Nomination for her role in the series "Orange is the New Black," and the first African-American transgender woman to produce and star in her own TV show, Vh1's "TRANSform Me."

June is Pride Month! 🌈 This month, PHA will be posting a Pride-themed post every Friday. First, we would like to start with a brief history of Pride Month!

June marks the anniversary of the 1969 Stonewall riots, a series of demonstrations against police who raided the Stonewall Inn in Greenwich Village, NY. Largely fronted by trans and q***r BIPOC, civilians fought back against the NYPD's discriminatory actions and violence towards the LGBTQIA+ community. Prior to the events of Stonewall, community organizers such as Marsha P. Johnson and Sylvia Rivera fought for legal reform. In the following years the Gay Power movement would gain traction, as well as other movements like ACT UP demanding an end to the AIDS epidemic.

Pride Month is and always has been a political event. While we celebrate, it is important to remember the reasons for its very existence.

Hello!!!
The Pride Health Alliance, together with the University’s Pride Resource Center, is hosting our second annual Cultural Sensitivity Training: LGBTQIA+ Focus.

This will center around appropriate terminology, pronouns, navigating various situations, ways to make your practice site more inclusive, and how to be a more inclusive friend/family member/peer/practitioner.

Not only will completion of this training look great on a resume/CV, it also opens the door for two future opportunities:
Students who complete this Cultural Sensitivity Training will have credit towards gaining Pacific Safe Zone: Student Certification! (You must complete a second session in order to be Pacific Safe Zone certified). Those who do not attend will need to attend a much longer session to become Pacific Safe Zone certified (which also looks great on a resume/CV!).

Date: Friday, March 12th, 4 - 6 PM

Content Curated By: Pride Resource Center, Colleen Smith, and Dr. Erica Barr
