Mark Castaneda is a current SOECS engineering physics student on CO-OP at NASA!🔭🤩He shared with us some of the amazing achievements he’s earned & work he’s done while being at NASA: “I have my permanent security badge, have passed the final stage of security clearance, have sworn an oath to the constitution, & am now a full Civil Servant at NASA Johnson Space Center. Right now my work is research & development in a laboratory protecting astronauts & spacecraft from orbital debris & micrometeoroids, & my next rotation will likely be at the Neutral Buoyancy Lab where they have a mock-up of the space station where astronauts train.” 🚀

Eric Lopus, Salma Sakhizada, Joanna Hughes, and Michael Solis were nominated by their professors after standing out as students looking to change the world🌎 These 4 SOECS students have set out to combine their talents to make a huge impact on CO2 emissions affecting the environment!🔬☀️

June Akpata was nominated as this month’s Student Spotlight by her professors after standing out as a student who excels both in the classroom & in not one, but TWO NCAA Division I sports at UOP. 🤽‍♀️🏊‍♀️

We asked June her favorite thing about being in SOECS: "I've most enjoyed getting to know my professors in the Bioengineering department. Since the class sizes are small, it's easy to build a good rapport with them which makes it easier to ask for help with content from the course when needed."🔬

June is a 4x Dean’s Honor Roll recipient & part of the 2024 graduating class & we are extremely excited to see her future accomplishments as a bioengineer.🎓 Congratulations June & good luck this season!!🥳🤩

Meet Matthew Kimrey ‘24, mechanical engineering major!

Matthew completed his CO-OP as an R&D Intern at SIG SAUER in Exeter, New Hampshire, where he was a member of the medium machine gun (MMG) team.

While on CO-OP, Matthew was a part of several projects that involved designing and executing tests, using Micro-Hite machines and optical comparators to make SolidWorks models of machine gun parts, and using finite element analysis (FEA) to design a cost-reducing part for the MMG. ⚙️

“I learned so much valuable information in my time at SIG from being able to pick the brains of world-class engineers and technicians. Having this amazing hands-on experience has made me realize how much I love engineering and how excited I am for my future.”

What an awesome learning experience for you, Matthew. 🙌

Meet Mechanical Engineering student, Matthew Kyle Chang ‘24!

Matthew is currently on his CO-OP, working as a Manufacturing Engineering Intern at Cospak, a packaging company in NSW, Australia! 🇦🇺

So far, he has learned about plastic container manufacturing, machine die setting, and project management, among many other skills. A highlight for him was creating the 3D drawings of the containers to make new products.

Matthew says that one of the best parts of his experience has been able to network and collaborate with different departments across the company. He will graduate next year with his BS and MSE as part of the Blended Masters program. 👏

Way to go, Matthew! We hope you are having a blast while learning and gaining this valuable experience. 🙌

Meet Calista Morita ‘24, mechanical engineering Outstanding Student!
From Lodi, CA, Calista is part of the ME dual degree program, where she will earn her BS & MS in five years. ⚙️
She always knew she wanted to be an engineer, from her love of building/creating things, and the wide range of careers open to engineers. Calista joined Dr.JuEun Lee’s research team in the lab, which has helped her gain hands-on learning experience, and as she says, has given her a huge advantage. How did she get involved in research? ⬇️

“Dr. Lee just asked me if I wanted to join her team. That's the cool thing about Pacific: the class sizes are really small, so you really get to know your professor by working alongside them in class and going to office hours.”

Calista has enjoyed learning how to use all of the machinery and software in the lab.🙌

At SOECS, summer time typically means CO-OP time! ☀️🚜⚙️🦺🧑‍💻

Our students gain real-world, hands-on, paid experience through the CO-OP program—which is built right into the curriculum. Most CO-OPs generally cover a semester and a summer.

Experiential learning is one of the most valuable parts of education, and SOECS students are more prepared for post-grad jobs with the support of the CO-OP program.

What an awesome summer it has been here on campus! The 2023 Pacific Summer High School Institute was a huge success 🙌

SOECS offered new and exciting courses to introduce high school students to the world of engineering and technology. A few of these courses included Mobile Robotics, 3D Modeling and Printing, Entrepreneurship & Technology Design,and even Drone Flying! 😯

We hope these students are leaving campus inspired & with unforgettable memories while learning & living the college student life at UOP! 🐯

SOECS Senior Project Day is a special event at the end of the spring semester where our seniors get to showcase their work in groups throughout campus. Displays, judging, and awards are also a part of the afternoon. 🏆

The event was held on May 6th this year, and the students presented impressive research skills and projects. Some highlighted projects included bioengineering students designing an advanced canine prosthetic to improve mobility, and civil engineering students designing renderings for new campus facilities ("Prowl Park"). 😮🙌
