Can’t let March go by without posting about National Athletic Training Month! Here’s a little definition of what an AT is from the National Athletic Trainers’ Association:
What is athletic training?
Athletic training encompasses the prevention, examination, diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation of emergent, acute or chronic injuries and medical conditions. Athletic training is recognized by the American Medical Association (AMA), Health Resources Services Administration (HRSA) and the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) as an allied health care profession.
Who are athletic trainers?
Athletic trainers (ATs) are highly qualified, multi-skilled health care professionals who render service or treatment, under the direction of or in collaboration with a physician, in accordance with their education, training and the state's statutes, rules and regulations. As a part of the health care team, services provided by athletic trainers include primary care, injury and illness prevention, wellness promotion and education, emergent care, examination and clinical diagnosis, therapeutic intervention and rehabilitation of injuries and medical conditions.

RECOVERY + SLEEP
What is recovery? According to Kellmann & Beckman, 2018, p. 5, it is defined as, “inter- and intraindividual multilevel process for the re-establishment of personal resources and their full functional capacity”. Basically these are the strategies we use to reduce soreness and optimize the benefits from exercise. There are several components to recovery, but today for we’ll be focusing on the importance of sleep.
Along with our brains needing rest each night, there is an increased release of hormones while we are sleeping. One of these hormones is the human growth hormone or HGH. Just like it sounds, this hormone is essential for building and repairing tissues damaged during exercise. Other negative effects can include decreased metabolism and poor cortisol regulation (feeling stressed out!).
So do your best to get quality sleep, especially after a tough workout. 7 hours is recommended for optimal health in adults. 💤
