#TakeMeToCrouse #CrouseSpirit In 2008, Crouse became the first U.S.
hospital to receive Workforce Management magazine’s Optimas Award for General Excellence, which in the past has been given to companies such as Intel, Google and Disney.
In case you missed it, the newly designed Pomeroy Emergency Services Rapid Evaluation Unit (REU) is now welcoming patients.
The REU helps manage Emergency Department flow by efficiently caring for patients who need lower-acuity care, which benefits all patients by preventing overcrowding.
Just another reason to say, “Take me to Crouse!”

Robotics Leadership: Introducing Dv5
The latest advancement in robotic-assisted surgery recently arrived at Crouse with the acquisition of the da Vinci 5 next-generation multi-port robotic system from Intuitive Surgical, the only one of its kind in the region.
An early adopter of innovative robotic technology, Crouse is home to the region’s largest robotic surgery program, with the most surgeons performing a wide variety of minimally-invasive procedures in numerous specialty areas – 17,000 since 2008. “It’s a game changer in robotic surgery,” says general surgeon Ben Sadowitz, MD, referring to the new Dv5 surgical platform. As the regional leader in robotic surgery, Crouse is proud to be the only hospital in upstate New York to offer this innovative technology.

WHAT AN AWESOME VISIT we had yesterday, with the distribution of 37 dozen homemade cookies to staff through Cookies for Caregivers, a community initiative started up by Syracuse native Scott McKenzie and his friend Jeremy Uhrich in 2020. Now living in Pennsylvania, Scott and a team of volunteers visit hospitals weekly to thank healthcare staff for the important work they do (they call this expanding their ‘hug radius’). The program has grown since Scott started it, with national exposure on the Today Show, Rachel Ray and People magazine. Many thanks to Crouse surgeon and board member Tom Hartzheim, MD, who arranged the cookie distribution. He and Scott have been best friends since they were six years old! Many thanks to Scott, Dr. Hartzheim and Cookies for Caregivers…let’s just say there were a lot of happy smiles around here yesterday!
Roughly 15 percent of people ages 20 to 69 experience high-frequency hearing loss that may have been caused by the cumulative effect of being around loud noises, according to the National Institute of Health. Over time, noises that are too loud can damage inner ear hair cells, which convert sounds into signals that travel to the brain. The damaged hair cells cannot grow back, so the resulting hearing loss is permanent.
