July is Sarcoma and Bone Cancer Awareness Month. 💛
Sarcomas are a diverse class of rare cancers arising in the body's connective tissues, such as bones, muscles, and blood vessels, making up 1% of adult cancers and 15-20% of pediatric cancers in the United States. Sarcomas are broadly categorized into soft tissue sarcomas and bone sarcomas, with the former comprising about 80% of cases.
Diagnosing sarcomas can be challenging due to their rarity and similar appearance to other more common cancers. At Upstate Cancer Center, our researchers are exploring cutting-edge treatments combining radiotherapy and molecularly-targeted therapies to help fight Sarcoma and other cancers. They are also developing models to identify and test other unique therapeutic strategies. Through continued research, collaboration, and patient engagement, the research team hopes to develop more effective treatments and ultimately improve the lives of those affected by Sarcoma and bone cancer.
The photo below is our Sarcoma research team taking a moment out of the lab in our Healing Garden. Let’s show them some love! Students provide niceties include visiting with pediatric patients to play or read with them, delivering flowers, gifts or books to bedsides, rotating with comfort or activity carts, and generally being at the ready to assist staff with any tasks that support department operations.
The volunteers also help with necessary jobs such as helping keep supplies stocked, checking in on waiting patients, delivering specimens, wayfinding and wheelchair transport.

July is UV Safety Month
Below are some simple ways the American Cancer Society offers to limit your exposure to UV rays:
+ Cover up your skin. Not all fabric is equally protective; if you can see light through a fabric, UV rays also can get through. You can find clothing that protects against UV rays with a UV protection factor (UPF). The higher the value, the higher the protection.
+ Check the expiration dates of sunscreen. Most products are good for at least 2-3 years if they have not been exposed to heat for long periods.
+ Put sunscreen on first if you plan to wear insect repellent or makeup and reapply sunscreen at least every 2 hours, no matter the SPF level.
+ Wear UV-blocking sunglasses to protect the delicate skin around the eyes, and the eyes themselves. Research has shown that long hours in the sun without protecting your eyes increases your chances of developing certain eye diseases, including cataracts.
