TRAUMA CENTER: Upstate pediatric trauma medical director Dr. Kim Wallenstein speaks to the media about how the Upstate medical teams quickly mobilized to care for 11 patients—8 of them children—who were injured in a house explosion in Syracuse.

Adult emergency medicine, pediatric trauma, pediatric emergency medicine and pediatric ICU physicians and many others worked to take care of the children when they arrived at the hospital. Many other teams, from social work to spiritual care, took part in providing assistance to the families. Our hearts go out to those affected by this tragedy.

What an incredible day! It was wonderful to go on a bit of a tour with this incredible human. Brady Lucas, who among many things is a two time Childhood Cancer Survivor, has written “Smiley’s Smile”, a book which teaches young children about what it means to receive a cancer diagnosis. Pulling from his own experience, while under the care of Dr. Melanie Comito, Brady uses friendly characters to articulate his message to children. His mother Lisa (pictured bottom left), graciously shared a bit about her experience walking through this journey as a mother. Brady was kind enough to provide us with a signed copy that we will have available for raffle at Clams4Cures on September 14th. His book is available through Amazon and Barnes and Noble. Please consider supporting this budding author, who is a part of our community and works tirelessly to support children, families and research!

A Donate Life Month celebration was held at Upstate Golisano Children’s Hospital, honoring organ, eye and tissue donors.

Among those who spoke at today's event was Gina Richardson, a CNY mother whose son, Ty’Sean Richardson, was killed in an auto accident. Ty’Sean was enamored with being a superhero, so his mother made him one by donating his organs.

Finger Lakes Donor Recovery Network now presents a superhero cape to pediatric organ donor families in honor of the life-saving decision made by the family 💙
