Community and Tribal Listening Sessions on the 911-988 connection
We want to gather thoughts on the connection between 911 and the mental health and substance use crisis care system, including the 988 Su***de & Crisis Lifeline.
For example, what are the current challenges, strengths, and opportunities for improvement? How should 911 callers experiencing mental health or substance use crises be transferred to the 988 Lifeline?
To get community insight, we will host three community listening sessions and three listening sessions for Washington tribal leaders and their representatives.
We welcome all input, but we’d especially like to hear about lived experience with:
Mental health or substance use crises
Su***de attempt(s)
Outreach to 911 or 988
Interactions with criminal justice or law enforcement
Community listening sessions are scheduled for:
July 17, 2024 from 12 p.m. – 1 p.m.
July 18, 2024 from 5 p.m. – 6 p.m.
July 23, 2024 from 1 p.m. – 2 p.m.
We invite all interested community members to attend. Participants will receive a $25 gift card for their time.
Tribal listening sessions are scheduled for:
Thursday, July 25, 2024 from 12 p.m. – 1:00 p.m.
Monday, July 29, 2024 from 5 p.m. – 6 p.m.
Thursday, August 1, 2024 from 2 p.m. – 3 p.m.
We invite all tribal leaders and their representatives to attend. Participants will receive a $25 gift card for their time.
If you have questions about registering for the tribal listening sessions, please email the 988 Program inbox for more information.

Celebrate Juneteenth with us on June 19th, 2024 in Tacoma!
The festival will include a main stage filled with amazing performances and speakers, an interactive kid’s zone and stage, face painting and a playground.
Partnering with the City of Tacoma/Tacoma Creates, Metro Parks, Tacoma Urban League, MultiCare and other community organizations and utilizing the beautiful Stewart Heights Park, the Juneteenth festival will host over fifty vendors from trade associations, local businesses, nonprofits, and finance. The goal is to create an opportunity for economic growth and set a path for financial stability within the BIPOC community and of course celebrate.
The Community Reinvestment Project’s Community Healer Grant supports healing services and activities that are by-and-for communities disproportionately harmed by the war on drugs in Washington.
We’ve recently released a request for proposals to fund programs that offer intergenerational healing, burnout prevention, traditional healing practices, and more to Black, Latine and tribal communities.
$5.7 million in total funding is available, and organizations can apply for up to $500,000 depending on their annual budget.

Casserian Engeri (And how are the Children)?!
I want to extend such gratitude and appreciation for everyone who was able to attend the Kids Mental Health Pierce County 2024 Networking Breakfast. We had over 75 attendees who represented over 40 organizations attend this community event. Special thank you to Tacoma Mayor, Victoria Woodards, and Dr. Jeff Eisen who serves as the Acting Deputy President and Chief Medical Officer of the MultiCare Health System Behavioral Health Network; the amazing Fahren Johnson with Schools Out Washington for their kind and inspiring welcoming remarks and words of encouragement. I also want to thank the HealthCare Authority, Carelon, and Mary Bridge Leadership and Foundation for their continued support and investment into this work. I also want to the thank everyone who participates on the KMHPC Steering Committee, Implementation Team, and Community MDT’s….we could not do this work without you!
Our keynote speaker Fahren Johnson shared with us the traditional greeting among the Masai Tribe in Africa which is "Casserian Engeri," which means "And how are the children?" This greeting acknowledges the high value this tribe places on their children’s wellbeing and the response is expected to be “the children are well”. She challenged us to implement this into our own communities and culture by integrating this question into how we great each other and how this might impact how we prioritize the daily care and safety of our children.
I am so honored and inspired to walk alongside you on this journey of innovation and collaboration as we work toward being able to confidently answer the call each time that ALL THE CHILDREN ARE WELL.

Do you work with young people? Are you in the process of developing summer programming to support youth? Are you looking to network with other youth serving providers? Well Summer Blast is an amazing resource for you!
Summer Blast has been a partnership between School's Out Washington (SOWA) and The Foundation for Tacoma Students for several years. In recent years, we have focused on grounding our work in the “why” and “getting back to the basics." For us, this meant providing a space to get back into the swing of things after coming back to in-person programs. We also wanted to provide access to training that was foundational and tangible to the needs staff, families and young folks are facing.
During Summer Blast, we partner with folks in the community to provide trainings that are responsive to current needs, challenges and growth opportunities staff are seeking. We collaborate with presenters that are directly from our field/community, and other external trainers to share their knowledge and expertise. We additionally provide some Youth Work Methods trainings to give foundational context for those newer to the youth development field.
During Summer Blast, participants will:
• Learn tangible practices to take back to summer and fall programs.
• Meet and network with like-minded individuals.
Note: This event has two parts.
June 17th & 18th 9:00 AM - 4:00 PM
The cost for both days is $50. There are scholarship opportunities available for qualified participants.

The word gratitude is derived from the Latin word gratia, which means grace, graciousness, or gratefulness (depending on the context). In some ways, gratitude encompasses all of these meanings. Gratitude is a thankful appreciation for what an individual receives, whether tangible or intangible. With gratitude, people acknowledge the goodness in their lives. In the process, people usually recognize that the source of that goodness lies at least partially outside themselves. As a result, being grateful also helps people connect to something larger than themselves as individuals — whether to other people, nature, or a higher power.
In positive psychology research, gratitude is strongly and consistently associated with greater happiness. Gratitude helps people feel more positive emotions, relish good experiences, improve their health, deal with adversity, and build strong relationships.
