Meet Ala!
This is Ala from American Samoa. She came to one of TCH’s citizenship days earlier this year and attended our citizenship class during spring quarter. Ala is the oldest child and has been taking care of her mother who was diagnosed with Cancer. Regardless of the challenges she faced, Ala was determined to become a U.S citizen. This is what Ala wants to share with everyone:
“Through my pain of losing my mom on the same day as my citizenship interview. I was worried because mentally and emotionally, I was not ready but with the support of Teacher Susan and volunteer Jane from Tacoma Community House, I was comfortable that I was ready! I was asked 6 questions and answered them correctly, I also passed the written and reading test but for some reason the officer couldn’t decide right away. I did not question because I knew my mom needed me! As I arrived at the hospital, my mom took her last breath as she waited for me. I took my oath ceremony on June 6th 2024 and I’m now a U.S. citizen. My heart of gratitude to TCH for the wonderful job. Ms. Susan held my hand up until I got called for the interview. TCH has an awesome village who are helping immigrants like myself becoming part of this country!"
"Thank you so much" – Ala

It is with immense heartache that we share our organization's condolences with the passing of Tacoma City Council member Catherine Ushka. We join our city and community in honoring the impact of her formidable presence and unyielding advocacy for equity and racial justice. Tacoma Community House was fortunate to be the recipient of Council member Ushka's talents and time during her 3 year tenure as a board member. Our work continues in alignment with her efforts, life, and legacy.
