Meet the Director! Ragnhild Nøst Bergem will be here from Norway to introduce the film!

"Being Ola" is an endearing portrait of an exceptional young man who puts his heart into striving for equality, acceptance, and independence. Ola is a 30-year-old man who lives in a small village in Norway with a very diverse group of people. Ola generally enjoys his life and is an engaged, witty, and sincere individual. He has a mild intellectual disability, and he reflects very openly about his condition. When Ola loses an important aspect of his life, he reflects on his existence and considers how he can become more self-reliant. It's an impactful film that helps bridge the gap between 'us' and 'them', and it explores the importance of freedom of speech, specifically for individuals with disabilities.

NORDIC BILDUNG AUTHOR LENE RACHEL ANDERSEN COMING TO PACIFIC LUTHERAN UNIVERSITY IN FEBRUARY FOR AN AFTERNOON SYMPOSIUM
Please join us on Wednesday, February 7th starting at 1:00 pm for an afternoon symposium and informal discussion in the Scandinavian Cultural Center on the PLU campus by scholar, author, and philosopher from Denmark, Lene Rachel Andersen (https://www.nordicbildung.org/).
Ms. Andersen is a renowned economist, celebrated author, and a Bildung activist, with a distinguished background of scholarly work. Lene is visiting the United States to introduce the new edition of the award-winning book, "The Nordic Secret: A European Story of Beauty and Freedom."
Lene has received two Danish democracy awards: Ebbe Kløvedal-Reich Democracy Baton (2007) and Døssing Prisen, the Danish librarians’ democracy prize (2012). With over 20 books to her name, Ms. Andersen has established herself as a prominent figure in Bildung discourse. Her lectures on the historical significance and contemporary applications of Bildung philosophy have received acclaim worldwide. Lene will lead an informal discussion asking two questions..... "How can Denmark be both a progressive democracy and one of the oldest monarchies in the world?
Denmark just got a new king. Queen Margrethe abdicated after 52 years on the throne and King Frederik X took over the reign of Denmark. “Why am I interested in Scandinavia and what do I hope to gain from studying this part of the world?
Rumor has it that the best place to pursue The American Dream is in Scandinavia. Can this be true? Lene is curious about how Americans perceive the Nordics. We have invited her for a mutual exchange of hopes and dreams about the good society and how the US and Scandinavia are perceived from each side of the Atlantic.”
Mark your calendars and plan to attend!
