Community collaboration โ itโs what makes us strong. Our unique structure (no hospital of our own, but partnering with hospitals and health care providers throughout the state) allows us to forge strong partnerships to better understand the unique needs of individual communities. We identify and fill in the gaps (FSU PrimaryHealth and our Immokalee Health Education site are just two examples) and we educate physicians who, many times, end up staying in the communities in which they trained (53% of our practicing alumni are in Florida). Community collaboration is a focus of Academic Medicine Week. Association of American Medical Colleges
Itโs no secret thereโs a shortage of physicians and health care professionals. The Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) estimates there will be a shortfall of up to 139,000 physicians by 2033. How do we address this? One way is by continuing to recruit, retain and educate outstanding students (who go on to become great alumni!) and grow our Graduate Medical Education (GME) programs. Weโre doing just that! Since 2022, weโve added four new GME programs (a 40% increase), three health care partners (a 60% increase) and have 253 residents (a 63% increase). In partnership with the AAMC, we are celebrating And, today, we are focusing on the physician workforce. At FSU, we remain committed to addressing this shortage of health care professionals with the ultimate goal of better serving the patients of Florida and beyond. ๐ฅ๐๐จ๐ฐ! We are blown away by the success of our pathway programs! Our team is busy compiling data for the annual report (coming soon!) and we decided to pull stats on our pathway programs offered in middle-and high schools through graduate school at FSU. Since their inception, nearly 8,000 students have taken part. Our programs find, recruit and retain exceptional students who have the desire and aptitude to pursue a degree in health care โ particularly those from rural and underserved areas. Many go on to practice in those areas, serving patients and building healthier communities. Health equity and health justice are core tenets in the Association of American Medical Colleges' strategic plan โ and has always been part of our mission at FSU! We celebrate this during Academic Medicine Week: What starts here saves lives! Want to learn more about our pathway programs? Take a look!

๐๐ข๐ ๐๐จ๐ฎ ๐๐ง๐จ๐ฐ? The College of Medicine and the Mayo Clinic in Florida have partnered to provide research opportunities to our students. Seven students are there now โ paired with lead investigators from the Mayo Clinic (some are FSU grads!) โ and gaining hands-on experience. Research is a critical part of a robust medical education, and it is being celebrated today by the Association of American Medical Colleges during Academic Medicine Week: What starts here saves lives! The Mayo Clinic partnership is just one way we continue to grow our research program at FSU โ for students and faculty โ all to solve humankindsโ most vexing problems!
