May 17th is ! The Endangered Species Act (ESA) celebrated its 50th anniversary last year and has been credited with saving 99% of listed species from extinction. Special Collections wants to take a moment to celebrate and raise awareness for threatened and endangered species by sharing a recent exhibit on dusky seaside sparrows. Unfortunately, duskies were one of the few species that never recovered under the ESA. However, the ESA has been critical for the survival of so many other Florida species, such as roseate spoonbills, Florida manatees, American alligators, and wood storks.
The Florida Environment & Natural History (FLENH) Collection is filled with materials that document the struggle and survival of these important members of Florida’s ecosystem. Follow https://ow.ly/Hk0c50RFuLn to see the full exhibit on dusky seaside sparrows & the FLENH portal to learn about how USF Special Collections is preserving environmental records to safeguard the future of Florida’s fauna.
Thanks to our amazing Special Collections team for the post info!

The USF Libraries and USF College of Arts and Sciences have formed an extraordinary partnership: the transfer of the USF Herbarium to the Libraries. Together, our goals are to proactively manage, grow, and enhance use of this distinctive and impressive research collection.
Established in 1958, the USF Herbarium acquires, preserves, and makes accessible for research and curricular use several significant collections. It is one of the largest herbaria in the United States and the second-largest in Florida.
The USF Herbarium is known for its rich collection of vascular plants, algae, bryophytes, and lichens. The collection has over 270,000 specimens and more than 10,000 books and related resources! Check it out at https://lib.usf.edu/special-collections/usf-herbarium/

We are excited to announce that The Elie Wiesel Foundation for Humanity has named the University of South Florida (USF) and Florida Holocaust Museum as the permanent homes of the papers and artifacts of Elie Wiesel, a Holocaust survivor who became an esteemed humanitarian, writer, and recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize.
Wiesel’s physical and digitized papers, including correspondence with world leaders, unfinished manuscripts, photographs, and video and audio recordings will be housed and catalogued at the Nelson Poynter Memorial Library’s Special Collections Department on the USF St. Petersburg campus. Artifacts from his collection, including his Nobel Prize, the contents of his personal office and library, and a variety of artworks will become a cornerstone of the permanent exhibition at the museum, which is located in downtown St. Petersburg.
"The USF Libraries look forward to ensuring these materials and the stories they represent are shared through ongoing teaching and research initiatives, securing opportunities for scholars and students to both learn and create new knowledge from Elie Wiesel’s invaluable archive,” says Kristina Keogh, campus dean of the Nelson Poynter Memorial Library.
