My dear friend, Dr. Carlos Garcia, visited with me on Friday at Networking Leads where he handed me a dedicated copy of his new book The Unseen Journey. I have not been able to put down his book all weekend. I am certain that you will agree once you have this book in your hands. I am so proud of Carlos and also so grateful for his genuine friendship.

I am really looking forward to Carlos’ book signing event here at Networking Leads on September 5, 2024.

A mentor’s timeless words:

“My 94 year old grandfather once told me that you won’t ever regret the chances you took on yourself in doing the things ‘You Did’ because mistakes and failures are your greatest teacher. You will, however, always regret the things ‘You Didn’t Do’ because you will live the rest of your days with deep resentment in not having the courage and faith to take a chance on yourself. Now that I am 94, I can tell you that my grandfather is absolutely correct.”

My takeaway: despite the concern, doubt, or fear…always push forward with your vision because you win either way…

Defining moments are meaningful experiences that stand out in our memory. When I graduated from Jesuit I recall wanting to help others. I did not know exactly how but I just wanted to help. So I went to law school. I help one client at a time. Then another defining moment in my life took place where I wanted to bring people together under one roof in order to create even more positive defining moments for everyone. I will quickly share two examples of what I am trying to say that just happened today. This afternoon I was told that a prayer group created a group text with about ten people where they chat with one another to plan when they would all meet up at Leads. I see them all the time…we all love this group because they are so genuinely good and positive. Then just now, I “get to” host the Jesuit Football and Cheer social in one of our Networking Leads meeting spaces. This absolutely makes me happy because I get to see first hand the positive energy and all the good these mothers create for the children and also our community. I genuinely thank God multiple times throughout the day for this amazing blessing. I welcome you to come visit us anytime.

COMMUNITY

What possibly does today’s gospel reading have anything to do with community? First, let me quickly summarize today’s gospel reading (John 20: 24-29). I call this the “Doubting Thomas” passage where Thomas comes to visit the other disciples, that are also in hiding because of fear, and is told by them that they have seen the risen Jesus. Thomas responds by saying to them, “Unless I see the mark of the nails in his hands and put my finger into the nailmarks and put my hand into his side, I will not believe.” Jesus then approaches Thomas and asks him to put his fingers in the wounds he has on his hand and on his side. Thomas then suddenly believes and Jesus states the following to him: “Have you come to believe because you have seen me? Blessed are those who have not seen and have believed.”

My takeaway: all of us, in a way, are a “Doubting Thomas” because when we face struggles or challenges in life we also tend to abandon our faith and lose hope. It is in these storms of our life that we even slowly withdraw ourselves from our foundational principles and also from our own community because we are scared. Like Thomas, we need to overcome our respective fears and come out from hiding in order to rejoin “our community” so that we can break bread together and share our concerns together. It is in our community, that we will see Him in others and strengthen our faith when we personally see first hand the wounds we all share. This is my mindset…this is my faith…proactively applied both socially and professionally.

STILL

A recurring hunch, gut feeling, nudge, or a frequent random occurrence that provides an undeniable sense of “right” gifts the soul a passionate rush and longing to create more “good” for humanity. If you seek longevity…this mindset is the fountain of youth that catapults you from bed every morning. I personally know individuals that are currently in their 90’s that have this mindset and man do they light a fire under me to be more like them.

To know me is to know that faith guides me and that titles, distinctions, praise, and money (other than to provide) mean absolutely nothing at all to me…nada…zero. I only value things like character, resiliency, morals, and faith.

Recently, a close friend attempted to categorize me professionally where I was asked what I identified most as: attorney, entrepreneur, writer, speaker, or counselor. My response…”I do not care for either but if you force me to choose (and they insisted that I did) I guess that I like the sound of “humanitarian”.

I am honored to personally know ultimate humanitarians. I also read a lot about the historically famous humanitarians like Mother Teresa, Martin Luther King, and Mahatma Gandhi where I recently found out that he was a lawyer…this really fires me up! The life of a humanitarian is abundant in meaning that makes the process the purpose for me.

For now, I remain faithfully “STILL” to really listen closely to what He wants next…I’m ready.
