Living with a disability during a pandemic Arizona State University sociologists agree: The COVID-19 pandemic has exposed a number of inequalities in our society related to race, gender, class, legal status and age. However, conspicuously missing from much of the media coverage on these issues are the stories of how the crisis is affecting t...
In Dr. Thorp’s editorial, he urges the scientific community to recognize the biases that have perpetuated racial discrimination in research, academia, and science:
“Someone I turn to for wisdom and leadership on this issue is Dr. Valerie Sheares Ashby, the Dean of the Trinity College of Arts and Sciences at Duke University. As an African-American female, she claims that she is leading today only because a few people decided to let her into this exclusive club—something she says hardly ever happens. 'How much creativity are we leaving on the table,' she asks, 'because science repeatedly fails to come to terms with our narrowly defined processes and our limited ways of determining success.' "

Time to look in the mirror This is a grave time in American history. Both the public health and economic problems of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) were foreseeable. But even more predictable is the racial tension gripping the United States in the wake of the brutal killing of George Floyd. It is easy to think that the p...
Research suggests adults with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) may use executive functions to compensate for social difficulties. Given age-related declines in executive functioning and the executive brain network in aging for neurotypical populations, there is concern that older adults with ASD may experience further declines in social functioning as they age. Our findings indicate ASD-related difficulties in social cognition (such as perception, attention, memory, and action-planning) may get worse with age in men with ASD and is related to executive functioning.

Congratulations to our lab team member, Melissa Walsh, for being awarded the Outstanding Speech and Hearing PhD Student in Research Award! Way to go Melissa!
Over the course of the last 30 years, autism spectrum disorder (ASD) diagnoses have increased. This means that a large number of people are aging with ASD and currently, little is known about this topic. In a recent study (https://docs.google.com/a/asu.edu/viewer?a=v&pid=sites&srcid=YXN1LmVkdXxicmFkZW4tYWJhLWxhYnxneDozYzU1YzE5ZTQzOGIxNjg3), our lab discovered that adults with ASD demonstrated exacerbated age-related cortical thinning, compared to neurotypical adults. More research is needed to determine whether these differences imply unique behavioral variations in older adults with ASD.
The Autism Brain Aging Laboratory at Arizona State University is among the first to study age-related changes in adults with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Our research studies help to develop interventions targeted for adults to promote independent living and improved health. We invite you to like and follow our page to learn more about our lab.
