The making of the Hugh Downs School of Human Communication originally began in 1978 as part of the Department of Communication within the College of Public Programs at Arizona State University. In 1999, the school was renamed the Hugh Downs School of Human Communication and became part of the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences at the University.
Professor Liesel Sharabi's research, first published in January 2023, has been featured in a recent article in Forbes! Her research explores how online dating can lead to lasting marriages, highlighting three key elements for successful relationships.

Joris is an Associate Professor at the Hugh Downs School of Human Communication at ASU at Arizona State University. His research focuses on the impact of digital media on relationship experiences and digital risky and violent behaviors, with notable work on topics such as sexting and digital forms of dating violence. With over 60 peer-reviewed articles and coediting the book “Sexting: Motives and risk in online sexual self-presentation,” Joris brings a wealth of expertise to our team.

Dr. Zhang successfully defended his dissertation, “Antagonistic Gestures: A Critical Qualitative Study of Community-Driven Artmaking and its Praxis in Cultural Resistance,” and we are so proud!
Joining Dr. Zhang were committee members Dr. Rocío Garcia (ASU, T. Denny Sanford School of Social and Family Dynamics) and Dr. Godfried Asante (San Diego State University) as well as co-chairs Drs. Heewon Kim and Lore H LeMaster.
Dr. Zhang’s dissertation cuts across disciplinary areas of intercultural communication and performance studies to reveal an innovative and engaged approach to critical qualitative scholarship in a community of artists.

Dr. Brandley successfully defended ben's dissertation, "A Communication Approach to Asexual People of Color’s Experiences with Allonormativity" and we are so proud! Notably, Dr. Brandley's dissertation is the first dissertation in communication to center asexual people of color and the relational ways through which asexual folks of color navigate allonormativity at the intersections of difference.
