We're Evolving!
25% Games has been our publishing name for several years, but everyone agreed it was time to change.
This Spring, club members proposed the names, numerous polls were created, and the choices narrowed down..
And the results are in!
VGDC's new publishing name is Heatwave Studio!
Stay tuned this summer as we update our Steam, Itch.io, Twitter, Email, and Website, and don't forget to check us out at Passport to ASU this Fall!
With a little over a month left in our development timeline, here's a preview of the game we've been working on!
Just a reminder that our Mini Game Jam Event is this Saturday, March 16th from 10:30 am - 8:30 pm! It will be held at the Student Pavilion in room 202 (Cholla). We hope to see you there!
The 2018 Fall Semester is nearly upon us and the ASU Video Game Development is gearing up for a running start on a new year of game development! We are ready to kick off the school year at Passport to ASU, a showcase of the best student organizations and clubs ASU has to offer. We will be at table 18 in the Ventana room in the Memorial Union from 6:30 PM to 9 PM, with several exciting debuts including the new game idea and a new club banner!
We look forward to seeing you all at Passport and on our first official meeting on Friday, August 24th in Coor Hall L1-84 at 1:30pm!
A new game is about to slice its way into the world... that's right, Chromaslice is nearly at its release day! Check out this trailer to see why you should be excited for Chromaslice.
If you want to get your hands on the game as soon as possible, come to our game release event tomorrow:

Over the last 2 weeks VGDC hosted our club elections, and now that they are completed we can unveil the leadership for next year!
President
Blert Rizvanolli
Vice President
Michael Webber
Lead Producer
Harrison Geesey (also secretary)
Systems Directors
Kyle Aycock, Connor Pillsbury (also treasurer)
Design Directors
Eric Szmutko, Joseph Larsen
Art Directors
Michael Webber, Marco Rufeo
Here we see a mix of old and new faces, and a mix of experience and potential. Yet, each of the officers has a drive to keep the club going strong.
Of course, though elections have assured the future of the club leadership, we are still not done with this year. The Video Game Development Club is celebrating the end of the year with a bang! To finish off the development cycle of our game Chromaslice, we will be hosting a game release event. There we will show off the hard work we put this year into our game Chromaslice, and give anyone who attends a chance to get their hands on the game.
Game Release Event
Wednesday, April 18th
6:00pm - 8:00pm
Senita Ballroom East in the Student Pavilion
Note: There will be catered food!
Some of you might also remember a promise we made in our last news post: that even bigger news would be coming for the club. Unfortunately, technical issues require us to push back that specific announcement. However, be patient, as we are dieing to share it with all of you, and will do so the moment the technical problems are solved! In the meanwhile, we would love if you gave thought to attending our club meetings or the April 18th release event.
The Spring Game Jam that happened last weekend was yet another successful event for VGDC. This is in part because of the excellent jam theme we had randomly generated for us: "Curiosity"! Below you can see the games that were submitted and a brief description of the idea behind each. Hopefully you'll be able to see how the theme "Curiosity" inspired us!
Hunker Down by Adam Eckert, Kyle Stevens, and Trevor Angle
• A twin stick shooter with a focus on learning enemy patterns, and with the ability to "hunker down", giving yourself some time to study the enemies swarming around you.
CatBox by Connor Pilsbury and Matt Bumb
• What's inside the boxes? This curious cat wants to find out. Listen to sound cues to find the box with the rat, and avoid boxes with ducks.
Deep Sea by Nick Nguyen, Seth Garret, and Chad Ripley
• Take on the role of a deep sea fish on a hunt. Only bioluminescent lights pierce the darkness, and you must them, finding food to eat and to thrive.
Too Many Cats by Joseph Tate
• In this puzzle game, you carefully place bait to trap the cats roaming the levels, leading one after another towards your clutches.
But VGDC also has something very important coming up. This Friday, March 23 we will be having our internal club elections to decide who will lead the club next year. Club members: Think hard about how you could be a part of the future of VGDC, and help it to continue improving and growing for years to come!
In addition to all that, stay tune for even bigger news next week...
On October 28th of last year, the world witnessed the birth of 4 new video games: "5 Second Rule", "Space Chunk", "Sprix", and "Rotarino". What caused this? A Video Game Development Club game jam, of course! For those unfamiliar, a "game jam" is an event where attendees develop video games from scratch based on a randomly selected theme. Attendees work alone or in teams, learning invaluable game development skills in a fun, fast paced environment.
The game jam VGDC ran last semester was very successful, and we are looking to replicate that success with the VGDC Spring Game Jam, which is happening this Saturday, March 17 from 9 AM to 6 PM at MU L1-35. Food and snacks will be provided. You are free to arrive late or leave early based on your needs.
Last week we completed a club first: Deciding on a new name for our game! In previous years, the club has kept the original production name for our games all the way until release. But this year we decided to buck tradition, and make a new name to release with:
"Chromaslice" !
Expect some awesome promotional material with this name in the next few weeks. Along with this re-imagining of the game name, we are also entering into a phase of development where the look of the game is also rapidly evolving and improving. Check out these screenshots that shows off some of the awesome assets created by our art team. Hopefully they will give you a sense of how fitting the name "Chromaslice" really is!
Though we work hard at the Video Game Development Club, we also know that its important to step back, relax, and enjoy some time with the things that inspired us towards the path of game development in the first place: Videogames! Thats why we are hosting a Club Social event tomorrow after the club meeting, to spend some quality time gaming with fellow club members. The event runs from 4:30-7:30 at Pinal room at the MU (Room 227). Bring your laptops, board games, card games, CRT setups, you name it, and enjoy a night of fun.
VGDC is already off to a fast start in these first few weeks of ASU's spring semester. But even as development on our game accelerates to full speed, there is another upcoming event that has our attention. Many of our members will be participating in the Global Gam Jam, a 48 hour international game development event that lasts from 5:00 PM this Friday evening till around 6:00 PM Sunday evening. We will be going to the University of Advancing Technology on Baseline and 48th St, which is acting for a jam site for the event. You can check out their site entry here: https://globalgamejam.org/2018/jam-sites/university-advancing-technology.
Teaming up is encouraged, but everyone is free to fly solo. No matter what, you will be surrounded by people with a passion for games and game development. For our current members, we urge you to take a chance on this once a year opportunity. For anyone waiting in the wings, what a perfect chance this is to jump right in to making games with all of us!
