Lauren Ruffin, professor of practice with the School of Arts, Media and Engineering will join University of California, Santa Barbara in September during their “Innovation, Culture, and Creativity” series of workshops funded by the National Science Foundation. The seven regional workshops, “convene diverse, multidisciplinary groups of experts and stakeholders with backgrounds in STEM and/or in the production and study of culture, including the academic arts and humanities and the creative industries.”

Ruffin will serve as one of the leads for a workshop in Detroit, Michigan on “Design Justice.” This one and a half day Design Justice Futures workshop and DiscoTech for discovering design will provide an opportunity for community workers, local business leaders, artists, designers, researchers, and activists to imagine and develop plans to shift decision making power and resources in design to be held by the communities they serve. We are thrilled to have Assistant Professor Christine Tomlinson as a part of the School of Arts, Media and Engineering’s team of experts! Tomlinson recently published a chapter on the topic of games and esports that explores themes in the videogame “House of Ashes.”

From the abstract: “This chapter investigates representations of war and Iraq in the historical narrative contexts of House of Ashes. The analysis is based on a qualitative assessment of game content, including narrative and character elements, in addition to online forum discussions among players about the game. The game and player reactions both suggest uneven changes in the gaming landscape as representations change and video games move away from common conceptualizations of the United States, military force, and people from Arab or Middle Eastern countries. Despite the game’s reliance on some tropes, it also questions common tendencies to present American aggression as justified and propels forward a prominent Iraqi hero who has been celebrated by most players in the study.”

“Data + Feminism = Equality”

“We thought it fitting to mark the occasion by bringing in some of the most innovative thinkers on linking data and feminism. We are hopeful that with a growing feminist injection in DH that we might get closer to realizing intersectional feminist futures, but also seek to foster critical conversations about the complexities of doing feminist work and engaging public audiences in digital spaces. PhD Candidate Shomit Barua selected to install art at Los Olivos Park for City of Phoenix.

In October 2023, Bloomberg Philanthropies selected Phoenix as one of eight winners of its Public Art Challenge. This unique grant program, launched in 2014, awards $1 million to support temporary public art projects that address important civic issues in cities nationwide and showcases the potential of artists to act as civic leaders. Phoenix's project, "¡Sombra! The Celebration of Shade" has commissioned nine artists to create shading and cooling installations in response to extreme urban heat. In the summer of 2025, the installations will be temporarily located in neighborhood parks throughout Phoenix. In fall 2025, they will be reinstalled at Steele Indian School Park for a free, one-day festival celebrating the community's resilience to heat and the critical importance of shade in Phoenix.
