Earth & Space Open House is a free public outreach service organized by graduate students from the School of Earth & Space Exploration (SESE) at Arizona State University (ASU). Occurring twice a semester during the academic year, each open house features public lectures, telescope viewing, and other exciting demonstrations and activities by experts in various areas of SESE such as astrobiology, astronomy, the Moon, Mars, meteorites, geology, cosmology, robotics, space exploration, and more.

Cassini Flies Toward a Fiery Death on Saturn Launched in 1997, the Cassini-Huygens mission has reshaped scientific understanding of the solar system’s most exotic planet and its mysterious moons.
In the wee hours of the morning of Open House (Sept. 15th), the Cassini spacecraft will be making its final plunge into the Saturn atmosphere as it ends its 13 year mission. To watch the final moments of Cassini, tune in to the various streaming channels online.

Cassini: Mission to Saturn: For Media Cassini is one of the most ambitious efforts in planetary space exploration. A joint endeavour of NASA, ESA and the Italian space agency, Cassini is a sophisticated spacecraft exploring the Saturnian system since 2004.

Comet ISON! At our November Open House ASU Professor Steve Desch will talk about comets and other icy solar system bodies!
NASA's Hubble Sees Comet ISON Intact A new image of the sunward plunging comet ISON suggests that the comet is intact despite some predictions that the fragile icy nucleus might disintegrate as the sun warms it. The comet will pass closest to the sun on November 28.
A reminder that tonight, starting at 7:00 pm, the EarthScope National Office will host a free, public presentation in the Marston Exploration Theater. The talks will cover earthquakes in Arizona, global maps, hazards, and include an amazing 3D presentation on earthquakes. The event is intended to create awareness for the worldwide "ShakeOut" earthquake drill tomorrow morning (10/17 at 10:17 am local time). (www.shakeout.org).
Tonight's talks are presented by Dr. Ramon Arrowsmith, Dr. Ed Garnero, Dr. Steve Semken, Wendy Bohon, and Sarah Robinson .

The EarthScope National Office (at ASU) will be participating in this year’s Great ShakeOut , a “Drop, Cover and Hold On” earthquake preparedness drill scheduled for October 17th at 10:17 am local time.
We will also be hosting a free public lecture session on campus at Arizona State University on the evening of Wednesday, October 16 from 6:30 PM to 9:30 PM at the Marston Exploration Theater, building ISTB4, ASU Tempe campus.
The lectures will answer these questions and more:
What is plate tectonics?
Why do earthquakes happen?
Do earthquakes happen in Arizona?
What should I do if there is an earthquake?
The lecture series will also contain content relevant to this year’s Earth Science Week (October 13-19) topic, “Mapping Our World” (http://www.earthsciweek.org/).
The EarthScope National Office will be hosting a contest for those ages 2-17. The winners from each age category will receive free EarthScope and ShakeOut swag!

Even though there won't be any Open House's during the summer, the displays in ISTB4 are always open during working hours M-F. The Center for Meteorites Studies display on the second floor now includes meteorite pieces from the meteorite that landed in Russia earlier this year!
