We held our hybrid 2024 last Friday (4/12). We reviewed program updates, shared feedback on , and played a quick round of to wake up from a filling lunch. Since this was the final for our program, we also invited NRT partner to speak on the State of the in . It was wonderful to gather in-person and remotely one last time with our !

Yesterday and School for the Future of Innovation in Society at ASU student Elma Hajric successfully defended her , “Unraveling Sociotechnical Imaginaries and Data Power: Assemblages, and Narratives of a Smart Campus Through an ‘IoT’ Pole Case Study.” She is now the fifth PhD trainee to from our program! Congratulations, Dr. Elma Hajric!

The 2024 convened yesterday at the Phoenix Art Museum and focused on and the . , , , , and gathered and contributed to what’s next for advancing , cities, regions and beyond. One of the faculty co-presented a session, and the coordinator and in attendance participated in discussions that explored in at the intersection of , and .

Yesterday partner held its annual event, , at the Venture Café Phoenix. With sessions led by program manager Ben Williams and NRT alumnus-now Design & Technology Manager Jake Taylor, the evening brought together leaders, , and to learn about recent impactful initiatives in the region and explore / technologies and collaborations. The coordinator and some attended the event, gaining valuable insights and connections.

Although March is only halfway through, with our grant program wrapping up its final year, we held our last Student Cohort Meeting earlier today. and the coordinator reflected on what they enjoyed about the NRT experience, and agreed that the , and , and were the most appreciated - and would be the most missed, once the program ends.

During the 2nd Spring 2024 Student Cohort Meeting today we went over upcoming - and - related conferences and events at ASU and locally in Arizona. also shared updates on research progress as well as which fictional universe (from books, films, video games, or other media) they would most wish to visit!

This morning some members of the program joined ASU School of Computing and Augmented Intelligence to at Feed My Starving Children. Music played while teams worked on assembly lines to hand-pack , , dried , and into bags which are then sealed, boxed, placed on pallets, and shipped around the world. Together, the group packed 141 boxes filled with 30,456 meals, which will feed 83 kids a daily meal for one year!

As a part of the #2023 , we held a Careers and Pathways for STEM Leaders session to expose to and potential and the facets of fields. Panelists included Dr. Dorian Davis of NSF; Dr. Lina Sela of The University of Texas at Austin; Dr. Keith Promislow of Michigan State University; Lynne Nethken, NRT trainee and Founder and CPTO of Rayva, Inc.; and Jacob Taylor, NRT alumnus and Design and Technology Manager at The Connective. Together with University of Arizona trainee Sabrina Wilson moderating, the speakers had a powerful, moving discussion about the rewards and challenges of STEM , and shared practical advice for future . Annual Meeting!

The hybrid 2023 NSF occurred earlier this week, hosted at Arizona State University by the NRT project on Design and Manufacturing of Medical Devices. The 2.5 day conference consisted of great breakout sessions, panels, discussion groups, poster presentations, social events, excursions, and networking opportunities for Program Officers and P*s, Co-P*s, , coordinators, and evaluators! What an amazing Annual Meeting!

Academic Support Network's Program Manager Tristan Rebe gave a great workshop on Resume/CV Management for the today. are no strangers to creating and , but what about maintaining them over time and using them in ? This presentation offered advice on how to one’s resume/CV, how to and in them, and how one’s resume/CV interplays with other application materials, depending on the opportunity(s) that one pursues. Now in mid- , we held our third and final today. With cooler temperatures approaching we have some fun NRT and events coming up, as well as the 2023 that will be hosting. We wrapped the meeting talking about our favorite / . 🍭🎃🍬🍫🥧🍂

We welcomed back Dr. Jordan Miller Tschida, an of our project, for an Talk. After graduating from with her in , Jordan went to where she works as a . She returned today to share her professional experiences since graduation with everyone and answer questions. Thank you, Jordan!

We had our first Skills Training session today, on (especially for the ). Quyen Wickham and Emily Wilcoxson of Knowledge Enterprise’s Research Development office spoke to the on the importance of and ways to do it and - with and without ! Our thanks to the for a fantastic discussion!

We wrapped our second Student Cohort Meeting today, during which we officially announced our 2023-24 ! This year, Albert, Lynne, Yati, and Achyut will serve as Council members - we look forward to your ! We also discussed the NRT events planned for the semester, and chatted about what things in life we felt were “overrated.”

We caught up with one another about our summers and talked about plans moving forward. This is the beginning of the of our project, and we are excited to make this last year a memorable one!

This afternoon, and student Mehran Rahmani successfully defended his , “Data-driven Control of Nonlinear Dynamics Systems.” He is now the third PhD trainee to from our program, and he did so in just over two years! Congratulations, Dr. Mehran Rahmani!

We held a key part of our hybrid 2023 last Friday (4/7), and some of the and met each other in person for the first time! We reviewed program updates, shared feedback on , enjoyed a tasty lunch, and Julie Schuldt gave a riveting presentation and session on in the . It was wonderful to assemble in-person and remotely for a day and focus on the , , and our NRT!

This afternoon, and student Abbie Dirks successfully her Master’s , “Access to Food in a Severe Prolonged Disruption: The Case of Grocery and Meal Shopping During the COVID-19 Pandemic.” Her research aims to identify and less adaptable groups in the context of during the COVID-19 pandemic, and makes suggestions for how social programs can better help such populations. Abbie graduates this Spring with her MS degree in Civil, Environmental, and Sustainable Engineering. , Abbie!
