Día de Mu***os is a tradition that is more than 3,000 years old with many indigenous roots ranging from the Olmec, Aztec, and the Maya. The celebration of life and transcendence begins on November 1st & lasts until the 2nd. During this time, many Mexicans & those of Mexican heritage, honor their loved ones with an ofrenda decorated with marigolds (cempasuchitl in Nahuatl, represent the fragility of life) to guide our ancestors, offerings of pan de mu**to, and photos of our loved ones who have transcended this life onto the next.
How will you celebrate Día De Mu***os? What do you put on your ofrenda? Tell us in the comments!

Are midterm stresses beginning to add up? The LDL will be hosting a toy crafting event on Friday, October 21st from 12pm-3pm in Room 104 inside the PSY Building. Your masterpieces will also be used in our Verb Learning Project led by grad student Ye Li. Relax while also helping research in child development! If you can’t make tomorrows event, we will also be hosting it next Friday, October 28th, same time, same place.
Did you know that infants brains are primed to produce every sound in every language of the world? But, they lose this ability quickly once they begin to learn their native language. So, challenge your children’s language abilities by introducing new words that they may see in every day interactions like foods from different cultures!
Every week we will bring you a new word that highlights the diversity of our lab with fun, new words to teach your baby scientist!
•••WORD OF THE WEEK•••
bāozi 包子
pronounced: “buh-ow-zuh”
Bāozi, or steamed bun, is a popular food in China & Taiwan. It can be stuffed with a variety of fillings such as pork, red bean, or egg yolk custard. When you bite into it, the dough is soft and fluffy whereas the filling bursts with flavor. It is a popular dish to order at dim sum restaurants, where they are often served to you in bamboo or metal steamers.
Many Spanish-speaking parents ask for creative ways to teach their children Spanish. Rather than reinvent the wheel, we recommend using affordable AND fun ways to teach your child español. Ever heard of Lotería? Often referred to as Mexican Bingo, it’s a great way to have fun with children while also teaching them how to pronounce phonetic differences that make Spanish unique, like the doble “r” & “l” as well as the “ñ”. Also, consider going to Lotería Night tomorrow at the for a chance to win fun prizes!
Some houses use pinto beans to mark their cards. What do you use? How do you say bingo in your house? Tell us in the comments below!
The Learning & Development Lab at ASU is looking for 5- to 7-year-old children to participant in an ONLINE study to understand how children learn the meaning of words (The Name Game!). More information about our study can be found in this post. Participants will receive a $10 e-gift card as well as an e-coloring book to thank you for your time!
