Last Pioneer Cabin
To repair and maintain this 19th Century structure so we might preserve, interpret and celebrate the Recently John G.
Today we have a rare and exciting opportunity – a chance to preserve a piece of the history of Bedford Township that possesses a unique heritage with far-reaching implications for the future of our Community. This historic 1 ½ story pioneer log cabin at 10488 Secor Road on the Vollmar property, was built in the 1830’s and is possibly the oldest surviving, and surely only intact Last Pioneer Cabin

We would like to thank the Monroe News and Bedford Now for their support of the pioneer cabin restoration project. In particular, we wish to thank reporter, Paula Wethington for her interest and continuous coverage of the project. I wish we could nominate The Bedford Now for publication of the year. We appreciate the support in getting this important project in front of the Monroe County and surrounding community. The weather is breaking and we will announce more news soon as the project goes back in to full swing.

While we see a number of trees down, we are happy to report that there is no damage to the cabin at this time. Our efforts last summer to remove seven large trees that posed a possible threat to the cabin have paid dividends during this extreme weather.

The Bedford Lawn and Snow team has been here all weekend! Expert lawn care and leaf removal. The cabin is surrounded by large trees and leaf cleanup is a very tall order. But thanks to their hard work, we are now ready for next Sunday's Christmas at the cabin fundraiser!
It's been a good week at the Last Pioneer Cabin.
The new chimney construction has begun. Only one or two rows can be put down at a time.
Roof replacement is underway.
Things have been quiet at the cabin lately as we retrenched to raise additional funding. The cash burn rate is approximately $300/day.
This delivery today at the cabin, was made possible by the generosity of local donors. Cedar, hand-split shingles will replace the decaying roof. This promises to be a very busy week at the Last Pioneer Cabin.
The future is in good hands. More BHS students volunteering at the cabin Saturday. They removed several yards of sand from inside of the cabin in preparation for the work on the floor to begin.
Things have been quite as we work behind the scenes planning the next stages of the restoration. Up next are the floor, the chimney, and the roof. More information to follow soon, once we firm up the details.
In the meantime, on August 12th, The Monroe News published an article about the cabin restoration project.
