Firefighter AJ Hicks with the Tifton Fire Department was the recipient of the Exchange Club's 2024 Firefighter of the Year Award. Hicks is a second generation firefighter in Tifton and has been with the department for just over a year.
Tifton Fire Chief Bobby Bennett said that Hicks always goes above and beyond. You can count on him to always show up and he is always willing to work. He strives to make himself better, so he is often taking additional courses to further his fire education.
Hicks’ Battalion Chief Joe Perry said he remembers watching him grow up at the department and he is grateful that he gets to work with him now. He said, “we need more men like him.”
Hicks said “firefighting is a family. And as a family, we serve the community. It’s all I’ve ever known.”

MEDICINE SAFETY!
About 35,000 young children end up in emergency rooms each year because they got into medicines while an adult wasn’t looking. These emergency visits can be prevented by always putting every medicine up and away and out of children’s reach and sight every time you use it.
Here’s some ways to protect your child:
- Put medicines and vitamins up and away and out of children’s reach and sight.
- Put medicines away every time.
- Make sure the safety cap is locked.
- Teach your child about medicine safety.
- Be prepared.
Child abuse needs to stop and education is the key.
When a baby won’t stop crying, we often want to try everything to help. It’s ok to be creative, but always be gentle. Never shake, throw or hit a baby.
CRYING BABY SAFETY! HAVE A PLAN!
All babies cry, but their tears can take a toll. When nothing you do soothes your crying baby, you may feel anxious, exhausted, stressed and frustrated. It’s normal to get upset when your baby cries, but you need to know how to manage. Here are some tips:
Take a timeout – put the baby in a safe place or with another trusted person while you regroup in another room. Do what you can to calm yourself.
Ask for help – let another loved one take over for a while and use that time to relax.
Self Care – taking time to care for yourself can improve your ability to cope with the stress of caring for a baby.
Merry Christmas! 🎄
It's that time again... FRESH, LIVE Holiday Greenery!

Keep babies safe while they sleep.
Have a plan!
Each year in the United States, more than 3,500 infants, without a prior known illness or injury, die suddenly and unexpectedly. Sleep related causes are contributing factors to the infant mortality rate.
ABCs of Safe Infant Sleep:
Alone – in their own sleep space, separate but close to you
Back – on their back, every sleep, every nap, every time
Crib – in a crib or bassinet with a firm, flat surface and no extra items such as pillows, blankets or toys
