Happy national dog day from the Derricks family’s new pup, Shadow.

National Check the Chip Day 08/15/2024

It's National Check the Chip Day!

Checking your fur baby's microchip can help it find its way home if it is lost. Here are some tips to consider to make sure your pet's chip is registered and working properly.

National Check the Chip Day Microchips greatly increase the chances that lost pets will be reunited with their families...but a microchip only works if its registration information is accurate.

We are looking for great Baltimore-area animal charities to support this year. If you know a wonderful organization, direct them to our website and tell them to click "become a recipient." They can complete the form on that page and send us their request.

All we ask of the groups is to have a goal of bringing at least 10 people to the event.

Thanks, and we look forward to seeing you at this year's Paws for a Cause event!

Paws For a Cause After nearly ten years of lobbying my wife, Heidi and I adopted a puppy from a rescue in Carlisle, PA. We had the opportunity to meet the entire litter of puppies as all six were in the same foster home. When we went to see them, the foster mom explained to us how lucky the dogs were. They had just....

After each Paws event, we donate 10% of the event's proceeds to Furry Friends Network (FFN) as a thank you for introducing us to our first dog, Fenway.

It's amazing how much money goes into the care foster groups and shelters provide for the animals under their watch. It's equally surprising how little they ask for in return when those animals are adopted. After bringing Fenway into our homes and seeing this financial gap, it was clear to us that we needed to do something to help organizations such as FFN.

FFN fosters strays, owner surrenders, and takes in animals from kill shelters. Not only do they provide medical care for the animals' basic needs, but they also help save the lives of animals in need of emergency care.

If you're looking to adopt a pet or looking to support the work of a wonderful animal organization, consider FFN. To learn more about FFN, visit their page or their website.

Last week, I went to the Maryland SPCA to drop off the donation from our recent event. I was given a wonderful tour of their facility and learned a lot about the organization. Not only does the SPCA do a great job of providing medical care for the dogs and cats they have at the shelter, but they also provide medical care and food for those struggling with pet care costs. In fact, their food pantry is getting so large that they're building a new structure for storage. If you're in the Baltimore area and looking to adopt, or if you're worried that you'll have to give up your pet because you can't afford the ongoing costs of medical care or food, contact the Maryland SPCA today to speak with someone who can help.

Aside from choking up when I saw the room where Roxy was when I adopted her and the area where Fenway and Edgar used to play after obedience class, I really enjoyed the tour and learning more about what the MD SPCA offers animals and their parents. I'm proud that we were able to give something back to them after all the wonderful years with had with Roxy.

The Derricks family is devastated. Today, we said goodbye to our dear, sweet Roxy.

Unlike Fenway, Roxy was the last of her litter selected. I saw her and her brother wrestling at the SPCA both at a Pet Expo where I had a booth of my own. Roxy wasn’t taking any guff from her brother. She seemed like she’d hold up well as a buddy for Fenway. Without much planning or discussion, we adopted Roxy (which is the wrong way to adopt a pet, of course).

Roxy also never lived up to standing her ground with Fenway, but she did have an amazing way of wiggling her way into hearts. She eventually won over Fenway and became a daddy’s girl.

Roxy was Partnership Wealth Management’s meeter greeter for over 12 years, and did a wonderful job. I missed having her at the office after she started staying home more and more.

She was such a happy girl, always on the tips of her toes as we walked around Canton with her tail gently wagging. She’d walk full stream ahead, never quite learning to pace herself. Walks home from the park often took much, much longer than the walk there.

Always a lady, Roxy was as sweet of a dog as I’ve ever met and will be dearly missed. Her sudden passing is such a shock and even harder coming so soon after Fenway. As Elise said, our home will be a very different place on Monday. My heart is broken.

Photos from Paws for a Cause's post 02/27/2022

Today, our family said goodbye to Fenway.

Heidi didn’t initially want to have a dog (if you can believe that), but after 8 years of lobbying her, she surprised me with a visit to Furry Friends Network to meet a dog (Sydney) she thought would be perfect for me. Sydney was adorable and Heidi was quickly smitten, but I noticed another dog who kept snuggling up to Heidi. I told her that I know she likes Sydney, but I think this other dog wants to go home with her. Fenway was the pick of the litter and one of the best decisions we’ve ever made.

Despite Fenway’s gruff exterior, he melted our hearts. Heidi said she couldn’t have loved him more if she gave birth to him. He broke every rule she had for dogs (no kissing her face, not allowed on the bed, etc.). Fenway taught me patience and made us better parents for Elise. He also served a key role in Elise’s love for animals (her first word was dog). Fenway and Furry Friends helped us understand the value of adopting pets and the importance of rescue organizations. They’re the reason we’ve raised over $100k for local animal organizations through our charity, Paws for a Cause.

Fenway was a fighter. Both literally and figuratively. He was diagnosed with cancer just before turning 15. The vet told us to keep him comfortable as he likely had cancer throughout his body. Just before turning 16, the vet found a tumor in his nose and said he’d only live another month or two. Six months later, it was time.

Fenway was by my side nearly every day for 14 years as I started and grew Partnership Wealth Management. He served admirably as the VP of Security, and I’ve missed his presence in the office the past 3 years since he retired. I’ll miss his big smile, floppy ears, and his playful spirit. Goodbye, buddy.

Our Story

After nearly 10 years of lobbying my wife, Heidi and I adopted a puppy from a rescue in Carlisle, PA. We had the opportunity to meet the entire litter of puppies as all six were in the same foster home. When we went to see them, the foster mom explained to us how lucky the dogs were. They had just transferred from a sister shelter in West Virginia, and a couple of days after they moved out, there was a terrible fire at the shelter. That story touched me and put the thought in the back of my mind that I would like to help an animal group in the future.

Our pick of the litter was a 12 week old Australian Shepherd/Black Lab mix. While he was young, it didn't take long for him to win us over. We almost immediately began treating Fenway as our child. Heidi has said that she couldn't love him more if she gave birth to him herself!

In mid 2006, I wanted to host a party to celebrate the 1st anniversary of my new business. After great thought, I felt it was better to host an event that gave something back to the community that has helped support our growth. As I was thinking of ways to give back, I remembered the story of the shelter in West Virginia and Paws for a Cause was born.
