Casa de los Niños would like to extend our heartfelt gratitude to Meghan Thomas and the entire Learning Express Toys Inc for their transformational donation of toys last week. We are deeply touched by Monique Ornelas, our partner at JW Marriott Tucson Starr Pass Resort & Spa for organizing the donation and nominating Casa de los Niños to be the recipient of such a gift. And finally, a huge shout-out goes to Nolan Richards and his dedicated team at Sun Mechanical Contracting, Inc. for donating their time, effort and energy to making sure each of the toys got delivered to us safe and sound. Without the team effort and commitment, none of this would have been possible. Your kindness and support mean the world to us. Thank you everyone!!!!

As Foster Care Month comes to a close, we would like to highlight Lidka, Ruben, and their three children. The foster parents state "We initially decided to become foster parents because at one point some of our family members needed us, and out of love for them and to support the family, we made this decision. Later, we realized that we have the ability to help other children in need, so we continued to foster and try our best to make them feel loved and cared for through our values. I want to thank my daughters for their support and understanding in every decision we make. Also, I want to thank Casa de los Niños for all their support".

If you're interested in becoming a foster parent, please visit our website for more information https://casadelosninos.org/programs-and-resources/foster-care-and-adoption-services/

Over the past two weeks, The Kelly Early Education Center enjoyed collaborating with Darcie from Wind River Yoga. During a one day intensive, Darcie worked with the Kelly Early Education teachers on the basic yoga techniques and fundamentals, as well as equipping them with breathing and relaxation skills. Then the children joined Darcie and their teachers for a week-long journey learning yoga! They had classes and learned mindfulness and breathing techniques.

Following these yoga classes at school, parents were invited to participate in a morning parent-child yoga experience. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to Darcie for introducing our teachers, children, and parents to wonderful world of yoga. We are excited to be incorporating these new skills into our classroom!

As Women's History Month draws to a close, Laura, one of our therapists, wishes to shine a spotlight on her grandmother, who serves as a profound inspiration to both her and our community. Laura shares the following heartfelt tribute: I would like to honor the memory of my Grandmother Doris Wanslee this month by sharing her story as a woman in this community from 1936 to 2023. She traveled with her family as a young child from Texas (as poor farmers). I recall many stories as a child that she told about the “1 bedroom brick adobe house off of Prince rd., across the street from Amphi. There was nothing else around us but a lot of dirt.” She often felt embarrassed and judged by others for her mothers handmade clothes and small home. She worked hard in school, despite the cruel looks and comments by those more fortunate. She attended church every weekend with her family, and felt called by the lord to embrace her inner strength and climb those mountains of barriers. She became one of the first female bank tellers for Wells Fargo , recalling the immense amount of scrutiny from men and women during this time. She continued with her strength and poured her passion into the work of the church throughout the years, working her way to becoming one of the first female pastors at Casas Adobes Church. She held countless “only female” classes and became a mentor to many more than her children and grandchildren. Among these accomplishments as a woman in the community, she also ran the books for her business “Wanslee’s Auto, Ugly but honest.” (that was more about the looks of my cowboyish grandfather) They provided support in the community to the Veterans, and Women’s Shelters (survivors of domestic Abuse). I am fortunate to have had such an amazingly, strong, and compassionate woman as my own mentor throughout life, and often lean into her strength and embody it to become a part of me!
Thank you, Laura for sharing!

Changing lives for generations

Casa de los Niños was founded in 1973 with an early vision to protect children from abuse and neglect. Since then, Casa de los Niños has led the way in developing innovative programs of prevention and early intervention and a broad array of support services for children and families at-risk of abuse, neglect, and crisis. Through our behavioral and mental health treatment services, immediate crisis mediation, and child abuse prevention programs, children and families in our community are able to achieve stability and continue to thrive for years to come.

Our commitment to provide the highest quality resources to vulnerable child populations drives our extensive program development, guided by a core vision to support children of all ages through trauma and challenging times, and to help parents create a healthy, stable home for their children. The dedication of over 230 employees helps over 10,000 children and families engage with the organization each year; last fiscal year was composed of nearly 30,000 hours of mental health and in-home family support services and 343 free parenting classes taught throughout Pima County.

As we continue into the next year, Casa de los Niños seeks to further expand our outreach, continue to improve services for at-risk families, to enhance the quality of our existing programs, and to reinforce our deep-rooted connection with our community.
