At Emerge, we honor the work, strength, and resilience of Indigenous communities, especially the Indigenous women leading the movement for safety and justice. This month's episode of Liberation through Love addresses a critical issue: Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls ( ). We are privileged to host April Ignacio, a survivor, advocate, and co-founder of Indivisible Tohono, for a powerful conversation on the root causes of this epidemic, the barriers to safety, and the ongoing fight for justice.
Did you know that more than four in five Indigenous adults have experienced psychological aggression, physical violence, stalking, or sexual violence by an intimate partner? Additionally, Native American women are three times more likely to be murdered than white women.
Despite these harrowing statistics, many people remain unaware of this crisis. A recent survey by the First Nations Development Institute revealed that over half of non-Indigenous respondents had never heard about the violence Indigenous women endure. It’s time to change that.
The ongoing violence against Indigenous women is not just an Indigenous issue; it's a community issue that demands our collective attention. It requires men to listen, reflect, and take responsibility for changing harmful attitudes to ensure the safety and well-being of Indigenous women and girls. It calls on all of us to cultivate safer communities for everyone.
This episode is a call to action. By understanding the scope of the MMIWG crisis and the challenges faced by Indigenous communities, we can all play a role in creating a safer future. Listen now, share widely, and be part of the change.
This is a conversation you won't want to miss. Listen to Episode #2 of now, and share widely! Available on Spotify or on YouTube at emergecenter.org/liberation-through-love
The Supreme Court has upheld a critical federal statute to protect survivors of domestic abuse, prohibiting those with domestic violence (DV) misdemeanors or restraining orders from possessing fi****ms. This decision reinforces essential protections and is a significant step in safeguarding survivors from further harm.
We're also proud to share that Pima County has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting survivors. In partnership with Tucson City Court’s DV Court, Southern Arizona Legal Aid, Southern Arizona Center Against Sexual Assault (SACASA), Tucson Police Department, and the Pima County Sheriff’s Office, we are dedicated to rebuilding and strengthening support systems. Together, we are taking steps to enhance our community's response to domestic violence.

Today, as we commemorate the freedom of enslaved Black Americans, let’s celebrate the resilience, strength, and beauty of the Black community. Juneteenth is not just a day of remembrance; it's also a day of joy, liberation, and love.
Despite centuries of oppression, systemic racism, and violence, Black joy remains a radical act of resistance. It encompasses the laughter of children playing, the love shared between family and friends, and the pride in Black heritage and identity.
As we honor Juneteenth, let's (re)commit ourselves to the fight for liberation. Let's strive for a future where Black joy isn't confined to a single day of celebration but is woven into the fabric of our society each day. Together, we can dismantle systems of oppression and create a Tucson where every Black person, including those experiencing domestic abuse, can thrive, flourish, and experience joy without fear.

Every 16 hours, a woman's life is taken by the deadly intersection of domestic abuse and fi****ms. Behind this staggering statistic from the Brady Center to Prevent Gun Violence are real people with families, friends, and dreams.
For people experiencing domestic abuse, the presence of a firearm can escalate an abusive situation to a deadly one in seconds. A gun in the home not only increases the risk of lethality, but also is a constant source of fear—especially as it can be used to threaten and control survivors.
As a community, it’s critical that we all advocate for policies that keep survivors safe, and ensure that survivors have access to critical resources. To learn more about the impact of fi****ms on domestic abuse and life-saving policies, visit https://publichealth.jhu.edu/center-for-gun-violence-solutions/solutions/domestic-violence-and-fi****ms

Emerge is hiring! We are looking for team members who understand and can acknowledge that the root causes of domestic abuse are embedded in multiple, intersecting systemic oppressions, like sexism, racism, homophobia, transphobia, classism/poverty, able-ism, and anti-immigrant sentiment (xenophobia) – even when that means facing and expressing your own blind spots. If you are interested in being part of the Emerge team, please visit: emergecenter.org/employment

Many individuals fleeing domestic abuse leave their homes with few or no belongings.
Donating to Emerge is one of the ways you can help provide everyday items so survivors and their children can focus on healing.
In addition to financial support, our most-needed items are shampoo, conditioner, body wash, lotion, deodorant, diapers size 4 & 6, pull-ups (all sizes), and cleaning supplies.
Domestic abuse affects us all, but the impact on Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) communities is often overlooked. Diverse cultural beliefs and barriers, shame, and lack of resources often prevent AAPI survivors from seeking help and accessing support.
Every survivor deserves to be heard, believed, and supported. As a community, we can educate ourselves on the intersections of domestic abuse, discrimination, and racism.
In honor of AAPI Heritage Month, we draw inspiration from Grace Lee Boggs, who dedicated her life to community organizing within the labor, civil rights, Black power and other movements, and who recognized that, “the only way to survive is by taking care of one another, by recreating our relationships to one another.” Together, we can create a culture of support and healing.

International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia, and Biphobia reminds us that true progress requires unity and solidarity. Last December, the world celebrated the 75th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. And yet, we know that “All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights” represents a promise not yet fulfilled for LGBTQIA+ individuals, the Black community, and other marginalized communities.
Despite facing disproportionate violence, discrimination, and domestic abuse, transwomen of color, particularly Black transwomen, have led and continue to lead the fight for equality, justice, and liberation. Transgender, gender-nonconforming, and non-binary individuals have long existed, although their contributions, identities, and experiences are often erased.
Transgender rights are human rights, and until every person can live free from discrimination and violence, our work is not done.
Check out the article linked below to learn how Black trans women are essential to our future: https://time.com/5880964/imara-jones-black-trans-women/

Today, we wear red to honor the Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, and Relatives who have been cruelly torn from their families and communities. We stand in solidarity with MMIP survivors and acknowledge the profound wounds inflicted by colonization, violence, and domestic abuse on Indigenous communities.
We invite our community to stand with us, uplifting Indigenous voices and advocating for meaningful change by supporting Indigenous-led initiatives and prioritizing their experiences.
To our Indigenous community: we see your resilience, we hear your voices, and we recognize your strength. We are committed to fostering a world where Indigenous women and girls are safe, valued, and protected.
Sunday, May 5, is Missing and Murdered Indigenous Peoples Day, a day to raise awareness around the systemic and devastating impact of violence and displacement inflicted on tribal communities over generations, particularly on Indigenous women and girls. We encourage you to wear red to symbolize solidarity and support for Indigenous women and girls.
This Sunday, as we remember and honor the lives of missing and murdered Indigenous people, let’s also commit to taking action to protect and uplift Indigenous communities.
Help bring attention to this issue this Sunday, May 5, at IndigiWellbeing’s 4th Annual Southern AZ Missing and Murdered Indigenous People (MMIP) Awareness 5K Run/Walk. The event will take place at Brandi Fenton Park from 6 to 9 a.m. To register, visit https://tinyurl.com/MMIP24.
Did you know that more than one in three women in the United States has experienced r**e, physical violence and/or stalking by an intimate partner in their lifetime? This statistic from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention demands our attention. Additionally, a startling 74% of survivors participating in a sexual and reproductive health study reported experiencing reproductive abuse, which includes coercive behaviors aimed at controlling pregnancy outcomes.
Pregnancy can be an incredibly vulnerable time for individuals in abusive relationships, significantly increasing the risk of intimate partner r**e and underscoring the urgent need to prioritize the intersection of domestic abuse and reproductive health in our conversations about sexual assault awareness. Survivors deserve safety and liberation, including access to affirming care, reproductive health services, and comprehensive support.
At Emerge, we firmly believe that reproductive health is a fundamental right for every survivor, regardless of their gender-identity. Yet, survivors often encounter barriers such as coercion and violence when seeking essential care. These barriers have profound and lasting effects, increasing the risk for unintended and undesired pregnancies, miscarriages, and sexually transmitted infections for survivors.
Building a safer community requires collective action, starting with acknowledging and addressing the unique challenges faced by survivors. Let's stand together and envision a world where safety and access to care aren’t privileges but inherent rights for all individuals. Learn more about how you can support survivors and take a stand against domestic abuse and sexual violence at https://ncadv.org/blog/posts/quick-guide-domestic-violence-and-sexual-abuse

In addition to the panel discussion, Emerge will provide updates on two crucial initiatives: the Generate Change Men’s Feedback Helpline and the new men’s community clinic.

Every day, individuals experiencing domestic abuse and sexual violence face a heightened risk of severe injury and even death, often grappling with compounded trauma that magnifies their vulnerability.
We believe in the right of every person to live free from fear and abuse. As a community, each of us can play an active role in fostering safety and healing for survivors and their children. Our commitment to survivors extends beyond raising awareness; it requires a holistic approach, addressing not only the immediate aftermath but also the systemic issues that perpetuate such harm.
It is crucial to understand that domestic abuse isn’t just a private matter; it is a public health crisis with devastating consequences. The risk of severe injury or death casts a shadow over every decision a survivor makes. Actions like reaching out for help, leaving the relationship, or even expressing their feelings can become life-threatening risks. The fear of escalation can often keep them in a cycle of abuse, where safety seems impossible.
By standing together as a community, we send a resounding message: violence in any form is never acceptable. Every person deserves to live without fear. Together, we can challenge and dismantle harmful behaviors and beliefs, prioritize the safety and well-being of survivors, and build a future where everyone feels safe, valued, and respected.
Emerge is proud to unveil Arizona's first Men's Feedback Helpline dedicated to supporting men who may be at risk of making violent choices alongside the introduction of a brand-new men's community clinic.
This event is more than sharing information; it is about igniting a conversation that has the power to reshape our communities. Join us on April 30 for a powerful panel discussion where we’ll dive into the complexities of masculinity and its intersection with violence.
At Emerge, we believe in fostering dialogues that challenge traditional norms. By empowering men to redefine what it means to be a man, we can foster a safer, more inclusive community. In partnership with Goodwill of Southern Arizona, we’ll explore ways to cultivate healthy and respectful relationships while creating safe spaces for everyone.
Join us this coming Tuesday to learn more about how you can pave the way for a future where every individual feels empowered to break the cycle of violence. Register today at
