The Diversity Council partnered with the New Jersey Association of Professional Mediators (NJAPM) to create opportunities to support educators and professionals in conflict resolution.
In 2022, NJAPM and Diversity Council formed an initiative to provide a multi-part series on diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) to a variety of school districts and community organizations. The training has brought the attention for strong public interest, with the third part of the series presented to the educational support professionals (ESPs), garnering extra acclaim. The success part of the initiative highlights the need for these additional programs and educational resources for this important, yet underserved, sector. To further this aim, NJAPM and Diversity Council are excited to announce that the EPSs program is now accessible online at no cost.

The Holocaust Resource Center of Kean University took students in the Teaching the Holocaust and Prejudice Reduction Post-Baccalaureate Certificate and Masters of Holocaust and Genocide Studies to Gdańsk and Warsaw, Poland.🇵🇱
This journey included visiting memorials and museums, meeting with scholars, learning from educators and advocates. Together we have a better understanding of pre-war Jewish life, a more contextualized depth of what was lost to in cities during WWII and the Holocaust, and how Poland today is dealing with memory. This trip has been impactful in numerous ways, as Kean students are continuously engaging in dialogue on how to best bring this information back to their classrooms and places of research. 🇵🇱
Thank you to the Masters of Holocaust and Genocide Studies of Kean University for the course for this opportunity! Thank you to the Taube Center for your expertise and guidance!

On this day, July 11, 2024, we remember the Bosnian and Herzegovinian Genocide.
In April of 1992 during the Yugoslav War, Serbia set out to ethnically cleanse or systematically make their territory religiously homogeneous by ridding their land of Bosnian Muslims, also known as Bosniaks. Serbia with the ethnic Bosnian Serbs, attacked the Bosniaks with former Yugoslavian military equipment and surrounded Sarajevo, the capital city. The Bosniaks were driven into concentration camps where people were tortured. In 1993, the United Nations (UN) Security Council declared Sarajevo, Goradza, Srebrenica, and other Muslim enclaves as safe areas that the UN peacekeepers protected. However, in July 1995, the Serbs committed what would be the largest massacre in Europe since WWil in one location, Srebrenica. In 1994, NATO initiated a series of airstrikes against the Bosnian Serbs.
In December 1995, the U.S. led the Dayton Peace Accords negotiations in Dayton, Ohio which ultimately ended the conflict in Bosnia which then led to a force being created to maintain the ceasefire. Since the resolution of the conflict, 160 people have been charged via the International Criminal Tribunal for Yugoslavia (ICTY) at The Hague. Said people, including those in charge, were charged with genocide, crimes against humanity, amongst other charges.

Happy Juneteenth! 🥳🎉
After President Joe Biden signed the “Juneteenth National Independence Day Act” on June 17,2021, Juneteenth got recognized as a federal holiday. However, African Americans have been celebrating this day of independence since June 19, 1866 by going to church since they weren’t allowed in public places. In 1967, Black leaders in Texas raised $1000 to purchase 10 acres of land which is now known as “Emancipation Park” in Houston, Texas.
Moving on to the Jim Crow era, celebrations of the holiday began to decline as former Confederate states passed new amendments that overall disenfranchised Black people, excluding them from the political process. That didn’t break their spirits as they continued to celebrate their day of independence in church.
Now in today’s age, Juneteenth is celebrated nationwide. People come together to celebrate the anniversary of the day African Americans were officially declared free.

Internationally, the official observed date for Holocaust Remembrance Day aligns with the 27th day of Nisan on the Hebrew calendar and the anniversary of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising. In Hebrew, Holocaust Remembrance Day is known as Yom Hashoah.
The United Nations recognizes Holocaust Remembrance Day annually and 2024’s theme for commemoration was “Recognizing the Extraordinary Courage of Victims and Survivors of the Holocaust.” With this theme a story of a N**i dehumanization resistance is highlighted. Friedl Dicker-Brandeis, Jewish artist and educator, brought art supplies with her upon being deported to Terezín ghetto-camp. Here she taught children in clandestine classes while there was intent by N**i authority to dehumanize the students. Dicker-Brandeis preserved the works of several children before they were unfortunately killed in camps. Dicker-Brandeis unfortunately did not survive the Holocaust but she was able to hide the art pieces prior and this featured piece is called the "Flowering meadow with butterflies" by Dorit Weiserová (1932-1944). In 1992, Congress established May as Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month. In 2021, a presidential proclamation expanded this to include Native Hawaiians. Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) Heritage Month is observed annually in May to celebrate the contributions that generations of AAPIs have made to American history, society, and culture.
Happy AAPI Month! Celebrate with your loved ones to honor the contributions of AAPIs in your life!
In 2006, President George W. Bush along with the U.S. Senate, recognized every May as Jewish American Heritage Month. Jewish American Heritage Month acknowledges and celebrates the accomplishments of Jewish people in the United States. This includes cultural organizations, school districts, non-profit organizations, and more to further commemorate the contributions of the Jewish American community to our overall society.
Today in honor of Jewish American Heritage Month, we acknowledge Ruth Bader Ginsburg. Ginsburg was the first Jewish woman to serve on the Supreme Court. Despite facing sexism and antisemitism, she was able to excel in her law classes at Columbia and Harvard and then went to teach at Rutgers University. While teaching she also was taking on cases for the American Civil Liberties Union, and afterward founded the ACLU’s Women’s Rights Project. This ignited her passion for gender equality advocacy. In 1980, Ginsburg was established as the United States District Court for the District of Columbia, and in 1993 she became an associate Justice of the United States Supreme Court.
Happy Jewish American Heritage Month!
Happy Passover! The Jewish holiday of Passover is celebrated by millions worldwide. It's a day steeped in antiquity and marked by remembrance and tradition for Jewish individuals and communities. For eight consecutive days, Jews participate in what's known as Pesach, or "Passover" in Hebrew, where a cumulative experience of religious history, education and festivities come together to commemorate the biblical account of Exodus in the Hebrew Bible. Observance of Passover always begins on the night of a full moon in accordance with the Jewish calendar.
The Holocaust Resource Center will not be posting this week in observance of Passover so we will see you after, enjoy your celebration!

We will not be posting this week to observe Passover but we wanted to let you know that April 24th is National Denim Day! National Denim Day is observed every last Wednesday of April. Drop a “👖” or “💙” in the comments to show your support!
April 24, 2024 marks the 109th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide.
From April 24, 1915 through 1917, the Ottoman Empire persecuted and murdered at least 664,000 and possibly as many as 1.2 million Armenian citizens in what is now known as the Armenian Genocide. Due to the scale, duration, and character of the atrocities committed, the event is widely known as one of the first “modern genocides.”
