This is the U.S. Coast Guard's 4 year academy. Acceptance is very competitive for this historic institution. It's in New London CT on the banks of the Thames River. Currently a new class of "Swabs" are completing their 1st summer and will be sailing shortly on the training USCG Eagle, the only square -rigger in the U.S. Govt. service. 23 sails, working crew of 55, 295 ft. long with speed under sail 17 knots(20mph). It can accommodate 239 people.

On this day, July 7, 1939 -"the Lighthouse Bureau went out of existence and its personnel moved themselves and their equipment to Coast Guard Headquarters from the Commerce Department building. Thus did lighthouses return to the Treasury Department from the Department of Commerce.

It's Tuesday -- which means cliff ops training for us! It's up to the aircrew whether or not to hoist with the gear up or down--there are pros and cons for each regarding safety for the rescue swimmer during an emergency.

Here's a throwback photo to when we had CG 6563 onboard--this is an archived photo as we do not have that tail number with us anymore. Experts were able to spot the San Pedro rocks in the background, meaning we’ve been using Mori Point in Pacifica for training for quite a while!
