What comes to mind at the mention of Elizabeth Taylor? Her eight celebrity marriages, two of which were to Richard Burton? Her memorable roles in “National Velvet,” “Cleopatra,” “Suddenly Last Summer,” “Cat on a Hot Tin Roof,” or “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?” Taylor’s journey is filled with glitter, glamour, drugs, alcohol, paparazzi, and steadfast AIDS activism.
We hear about all of these and so much more in Taylor’s voice, in immensely candid, newly discovered tapes from 1964, in which Richard Merryman interviews her for a book. As we listen to the star speak in “Elizabeth Taylor: The Lost Tapes,” playing at the on August 26 and 27, the icon becomes touchingly human, sharing her most vulnerable feelings. Director Nanette Burnstein layers public and personal images of Taylor over her voice, adding to the story’s intimacy, in which she yearns for legitimacy and agency.

WIDOW CLICQUOT plays this Friday to Sunday at 7:30 PM at the Pop open a story with us.
WIDOW CLICQUOT is based on the true story of the “Grande Dame of Champagne,” Barbe-Nicole Ponsardin (1777–1866) who, at the age of 20, became Madame Clicquot after marrying the scion of a winemaking family. She lived to 88, but this is her origin story.
Named V***e (the French word for widow) at age 27, she is determined to protect her family’s legacy and boldly challenge the men — as well as the state — set on stripping her of her vineyards.
“Inspiring, rousing, and romantic, this biopic about a visionary young widow who built a champagne empire is a historical drama for wine lovers that’s best watched with a glass of bubbly in hand.” – Screen Zealots

FINDING YOUR ROOTS - with Henry Louis Gates Jr. and LeVar Burton
Renowned scholar Dr. Henry Louis Gates, Jr. returns to the Martha's Vineyard Film Center for a special screening of FINDING YOUR ROOTS. Gates will present an episode of the show featuring actor and activist LeVar Burton, who will then join Gates on stage for a discussion. Gates uses genealogical detective work and cutting-edge DNA analysis to guide guests through the branches of their family trees. Uncovering buried secrets and inspiring stories of long- forgotten ancestors.
LeVar Burton launched his acting career while still a student at the University of Southern California. At 19, he found himself on the cover of Time Magazine, after landing the groundbreaking role of Kunta Kinte in the landmark television series Roots. A seemingly impossible act to follow, Burton achieved further global acclaim as Chief Engineer Geordi La Forge in the iconic Star Trek: The Next Generation television series – a role he reprised in Star Trek: Picard in 2023. However, it has been his role as host and executive producer of the beloved PBS children’s series Reading Rainbow of which he is most proud.

“It’s the balance of comedy and existential drama that truly elevates Thelma.” – Slant Magazine
The feature directorial debut of Josh Margolin, THELMA is a poignant action-comedy that gives veteran Oscar® nominee June Squibb (NEBRASKA) her first leading role and features the final performance of trailblazing actor Richard Roundtree (SHAFT). Squibb, who did most of her own stunts in the film, plays Thelma Post, a feisty 93-year-old grandmother who gets conned by a phone scammer pretending to be her grandson (The White Lotus’ Fred Hechinger) and sets out on a treacherous quest across Los Angeles, accompanied by an aging friend (Roundtree) and his motorized scooter, to reclaim what was taken from her.

You often perform at the Whaling Church, so why have you chosen to appear at the this summer?
My wife and I go to the movies there all the time, and it’s really comfortable! My audience is my contemporaries. They like to be comfortable. The Whaling Church is a pleasant experience but not as comfortable. Those seats in the Whaling Church are harder than Chinese algebra. There is a certain point where you trade ambiance for comfort, and the Martha’s Vineyard Film Center is a very pleasant place to see events.
Thank you Livingston!

This gorgeously shot and well-paced film, based on Ólafur Jóhann Ólafsson’s book of the same title, poignantly touches upon themes of love, regret, and the passage of time and leaves us yearning to defy the improbability of being able to go home again.
